Last April, Off The Record columnist, John J. Dalesandro dedicated one of his columns to a member in most bands that "never seem to get the recognition they deserve" — the drummer. He pointed out that "the backbone of any band — the unsung hero of any band — is unmistakeably the drummer." I might add that John backed this up by dropping the names of some of the best rock drummers around.

After some interesting arguments I finally agreed with him on who's best. Although it took some extra listening I came to the conclusion that Bill Bruford is the best rock drummer alive.
