For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits… “…to another various kinds of tongues, ἑτέρῳ γένη γλωσσῶν, ( hetero genay glow-sown ) [to a different one kinds of tongues, 1 Corinthians 12 1 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NASB) But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. And God has placed in the church Pirst of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? The implied answer is “no.” 1 Cor 14:5, 18 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues… I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. For everyone or just some? 1 Corinthians 12 1 Corinthians 12:10 & 28 (NASB) “…various kinds of tongues, γένη γλωσσῶν, ( genay glow-sown ) [ kinds of tongues ] γένος: family, race, kind (genos) (where we get the taxonomic rank in biology – family, genus, species) There are at least 5 kinds (families, groupings, genres) of tongues! “at least” because they can be mixed like primary colors Greek Glossary 1. Tongue: γλῶσσα – (glossa, pronounced “glow-sa”) James 3:5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. 2. Tongues: γλώσσαις – (glow-sais): languages 3. Language: διάλεκτος – (dia-lectos): where we get “dialect” 4. To Speak: λαλέω – (laleo): literally “I speak” Acts 2:1-12 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and Pilled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues (γλῶσσαι) of Pire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were illed with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (λαλεῖν ἑτέραις γλώσσαις) as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken (διαλέκτῳ λαλούντων). Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking (λαλοῦντες) Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language (διαλέκτῳ)? Acts 2:1-12 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring (λαλούντων) the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (γλώσσαις) Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” Transliteration Glossary 1. Dialectolalia : speaking in a known language (combining the Greek words for language and to speak - [διάλεκτος + λαλέω] sometimes called xenolalia – from ξένος [xenos]=foreign, a foreigner, a stranger + to speak) 2. Glossolalia: speaking in an unknown language (combining the Greek words for tongue and to speak) –[γλῶσσα + λαλέω] - a term first used in 1879 by Frederic Farrar (an Anglican cleric, theologian and author) according to the Oxford English Dictionary (At Least) Five Kinds of Tongues Families Groupings Genres 1. Supernatural Dialectolalia for Permanent Use 2. Glossolalia into Dialectolalia Public 3. Glossolalia for Interpretation 4. Glossolalia as a Sign (of the Holy Spirit’s baptism) } 5. Glossolalia to God (Praying in Tongues or in the Spirit) Private 1. Supernatural Dialectolalia for Permanent Use (xenolalia) Definition: when a person is given the ability to speak and understand a known language supernaturally without study Purpose: expansion of the gospel to unreached people groups; to reach every tribe and tongue 1. Supernatural Dialectolalia for Permanent Use Genesis 11:1-9 (The Beginning) Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. 1. Supernatural Dialectolalia for Permanent Use Revelation 7:9-10 (The End) After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language (γλωσσῶν), standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” 1. Supernatural Dialectolalia for Permanent Use Definition: when a person is given the ability to speak and understand a known language supernaturally without study Purpose: expansion of the gospel to unreached people groups; to reach every tribe and tongue Hearing: translated, not interpreted; no need for gift of interpretation Example: Surpresa Sithole 1. Supernatural Dialectolalia for Permanent Use “For example, Surpresa Sithole, Heidi and Rolland Baker’s main associate— who is both very apostolic and very prophetic— speaks fourteen languages. He only learned two of those languages in a natural way. He received all of the other languages through the supernatural empowerment of the Holy Spirit— he could both speak in a different language and understand what he was saying. The language, once received, remained a language that he could continue to speak and understand.” Surprise Sithole 2015 Though not explicitly shown in scripture, this genre of tongues deFinitely its the “greater things” in John 14:12. WPFilm.com “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will Darren Wilson do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these…” Go to link for video The Next 4 Tongues are Glossolalia These are all explicitly found in scripture and called “tongues”[γλώσσαις – (glow-sais)] Prophecy All Glossolalia Begins Here All Glossolalia starts by being directed to God 1 Cor 14:2, 27-28 For the one speaking in a tongue does not speak to people but to God… Person speaking If someone speaks in a tongue, it should be two, or at the in tongues most three, one after the other, and someone must interpret. But if there is no interpreter, he should be silent in the church. Let him speak to himself and to God. All Glossolalia Begins Here All Glossolalia starts by being directed to God … not unlike prayer. Though personal prayer, corporate prayer, petitions, praises, and intercession are all Person slightly different, they are all directed Godward. speaking in tongues 2.
