Extended Writing Task:

This week I want you to write from the perspective of . You will write a diary entry about your first day at a new school.

Matilda Wormwood is an exquisite and intelligent little girl. Unfortunately, Matilda is misunderstood by her family because she is very different from their ways of life. As time passes, Matilda finally starts school that has a kindly teacher, loyal friends and a sadistic principal. As she gets fed up with the constant cruelty, Matilda begins to realize that she has a gift of telekinetic powers!

I know many of you will have a copy of the book - Matilda by but please do not worry if you do not have a copy. I have provided links and materials which should be all you need. The movie is currently steaming on Netflix if you have access to that.

The following link takes you to a clip from the movie Matilda. It shows her first day at school the focus of your diary entry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntirWguFrfM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyXuO-MRvwk

The following character descriptions help to paint a picture of the two contrasting staff members you (Matilda) meet on your first day at school.

Character Descriptions Roald Dahl - Matilda

The teacher was called Miss Honey, and she could not have been more than twenty-three or twenty-four. She had a lovely pale oval Madonna face with blue eyes and her hair was light- brown. Her body was so slim and fragile one got the feeling that if she fell over she would smash into a thousand pieces, like a porcelain figure. Miss Jennifer Honey was a mild and quiet person who never raised her voice and was seldom seen to smile, but there is no doubt she possessed that rare gift for being adored by every small child under her care. ‘Her body was so slim and fragile one got the feeling that if she fell over she would smash into a thousand pieces, like a porcelain figure.’ Chapter 7, pg. 50 (simile)

Miss Trunchbull, the Headmistress, was something else altogether. She was a gigantic holy terror, a fierce tyrannical monster who frightened the life out of the pupils and teachers alike. When she marched along a corridor you could actually hear her snorting as she went, and if a group of children happened to be in her path, she ploughed right on through them like a tank, with small people bouncing off her to the left and right. She had an obstinate chin, a cruel mouth and small arrogant eyes. She always had on a brown cotton smock which was pinched in at the waist with a wide leather belt. The belt was fastened in front with an enormous silver buckle. ‘Miss Trunchbull never walked, she always marched like a storm-trooper with long strides and arms swinging.’ Chapter 7, pg. 51 (simile) L.O. WAGOLL

Wednesday 8th July 2020

Dear Diary,

Today was a mixed bag of emotions! I finally found myself in a place of learning, of books, children and friendship. School!

Firstly, I was dropped off outside the ominous iron gates of the grand, old school. The other children were already congregated in groups and the sound of their chatter and laughter washed over me like the rays of the sun. I now get to go to school and for five days a week, I belong. I am overwhelmed with happiness.

I’ve made a wonderful new friend, Lavender. She must be around my age, but I haven’t had the chance to ask her yet. Our conversation was dominated by one topic, ‘Trunchbull’.

Miss Trunchbull, the Headmistress, is a tyrannical monster. She seems to actually delight from frightening the life out of the children and teachers alike. Marching like a soldier storming toward the oncoming enemy, she manoeuvres through the corridors leaving a wave of fear as she goes. She actually snorts as she walks, like a farmyard animal. Obviously I didn’t laugh. Her sadistic nature is matched by her merciless appearance. She has a cruel mouth and small piggy eyes that make her look arrogant. She wears a leather belt with an enormous silver buckle. Other children tell me she uses it as a weapon to beat them with. Do you think that is true? I’m hoping that while she’s definitely aggressive, their suggestions that she is actually violent are exaggerated.

Miss Honey, on the other hand, is a mild, softly spoken person. Her kindness shines through her timid personality and all the children, including me, adore her. She introduced me to the class and seated me with Lavender, who I feel hopeful is going to become a close friend (a best friend perhaps). The day went so fast as we did an assessment. I love tests. Miss Honey asked me to multiply some big numbers. What was I to do? Shockingly she didn’t mock me when I got all the answers correct. She thinks I have a gift. A gift! She said everyone is good at something. I’m really going to enjoy being in her class.

I hope I don’t see the Trunchbull too often. We will have to see what happens…
