Georgia sports award

Sammy Styers, former Wilkes native and son of Rick and Mary Sallie Styers, was recently recognized for his outstanding grounds care on the Ragsdale baseball field at Columbus State University when the Georgia Baseball Coaches Association awarded Columbus State best collegiate field in Georgia. Styers is head grounds keeper/maintenance over the field while also filling the role of assistant coach for the Columbus State University Cougers, a position he has held for 15 years. He serves as first base coach, works defense with the outfielders, assists hitters and also recruits. “I had no idea there was such an award,” said Styers. “I’ve learned [field mainte- nance] from experience and tried never to make the same mistake twice when I messed up.” Head baseball coach, Greg Appleton, said, “I’ve been saying we have the best field in Georgia for years and it is about time it was recognized.” Styers was a student athlete while attending Wilkes Central High School before attend- ing Gardner-Webb University where he earned a Business Administration degree and later an M.B.A. from Columbus State. While at Gardner-Webb, Styers played baseball all four years for the Runnin’ Buldogs and is ranked among the top in career games played. He was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Region and honor- able mention All-American teams his senior season. While at Columbus State, Styers was part Hi, I am Cali, a student athlete at North Wilkes of leadership taking the Cougers to eight High School.
