Mr. Vandermyde shared information regarding manufacturing of specialized guns and gun parts. With over 30 years of experience, he also works with law enforcement and provides services to them. Restaurants, bars, and shops, the social heart of our local communities, cannot afford 25 percent tariffs on European food and drink products and cannot recover with them in place. Our industry needs the tariffs to end immediately. Tariffs hurt many industries, but they hurt the hospitality industry most. As the crisis facing our industry deepens, the urgency of tariff relief grows. Our formula for survival through this economic crisis is simple: for each customer, we need to maximize sales of profit drivers like wine by the glass, and minimize the cost of inputs like cheese, olive oil, meat, and other food. These expensive tariffs make that impossible. We are gravely concerned that existing and proposed support programs do not, or will not, provide relief of the restaurant tariffs. We are also concerned that given the uncertain prospects for bilateral negotiations between the United States and the European Union, tariff relief may not come until well into 2021, or later. In place for over a year, the restaurant tariffs have in no way pressured the European Union to end its aircraft subsidies, yet the United States has kept these tariffs in place through the greatest crisis our industry has ever faced.

In search for totemic foods – Exploring discursive foodscapes online in Finnish, English and French Marjaana Mäkelä A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2020 1 Abstract This interdisciplinary research investigates how chilli and chocolate emerge as totemic foods in online foodie discourse. The corpus is compiled from Social Networking Services (blogs, community websites, recipe sharing sites, and conversation fora) in Finnish, English and French. The theoretical framework is construed with post-Bourdieusian taste and distinction studies on discourse, complemented by a feminist positioning. A netnographically inspired inquiry in an observer’s position enhances the methodology of critical discourse studies. The study introduces a theoretical concept: discursive foodscapes, contributing on two dimensions to extant theorising. It focuses the observation on multivocal online communities and extends foodscape analysis towards non-concrete consumption, on a discursive level. Moreover, the study suggests new practices for taste engineering, relevant in online consumption contexts. Three research questions draw on chilli and chocolate as totemic substances, interpreted in a framework of contemporary tribalism within the paradigmatic viewpoint of Consumer Culture Theory: emergence of chocolate and chilli as totemic foods; taste and distinction performance; and representations of gender and power.

The aim of this thesis is to explore the practice of chicken keeping and to understand these keepers’ motivations, attitudes, and the relationships they have to their chickens. I adopt an ethnographic approach based on one-off visits and extended stays with chicken keepers, auto- and virtual ethnographic methods and semi-structured interviews.

    DARNewsletterE oVol. 12, No. 1 Dictionary of American Regional English Winter 2009o Letter Z Chosen to Honor Fred Cassidy or the last decade or so, DARE has had a devel- Fopment initiative called the “Adopt a Letter” program, in which donors of $100,000 or more have had the opportunity to “adopt” a letter of their choice. We are delighted to say that at this point six individuals and three private founda- tions have earned the right to claim a letter. Their choices have been A, C, D, F, G, J, R, S, and T. While most friends of DARE are not in a posi- tion to give at that level, many donors have given generously either to the Dictionary of American Regional English Fund or the Frederic G. Cassidy DARE Fund (which was established after his death in 2000). Last spring at a meeting of the DARE Board of Visitors, Development Director Jon Sorenson announced that the Frederic G. Cassidy DARE Fund had topped the $100,000 mark! With that goal having been reached, the members of The Heart of Ohio the Board voted to adopt a letter in Fred’s honor.
