SCENE ONE (An empty stage. There is a podium and a projector screen emblazoned with the logo “WELLSTONE PROJECT.” A spotlight comes up on STEPHEN, who stands at the podium, dressed in formal attire. He carries a drink in his hand.) STEPHEN Thank you all for being here tonight – for your support – for honoring my brother’s life and legacy. (as HE speaks, the screen behind him flashes a portrait of Paul Wellstone) It would mean the world to them – Paul, and Sheila (the screen flashes a photo of Paul and Sheila together) – to see you all here tonight. (he sips his drink liberally and shakes himself out) I just want to apologize in advance – I never had my brother’s knack for public speaking. (HE chuckles nervously) But I always said… I always said my brother had a way of bringing people together… Sometimes in ways we might not expect. But – (the screen flashes a photo of a beach in Maryland) One way or another, it all leads back… to this. (without looking backward, the screen raises out of view, and the set changes to the beach seen in the photo, complete with a sunbathing SHEILA, reclining on a beach chair, reading a book) The beaches our parents took us to as kids… I haven’t set foot here in years, but I can still see it all like it was yesterday. (HE mimes to various parts of the set) The stand where they used to sell popsicles on hot days. (another) And over there, see? Political History of Nevada Chapter 1 Politics in Nevada, Circa 2016 37 CHAPTER 1: POLITICS IN NEVADA, CIRCA 2016 Nevada: A Brief Historiography By EMERSON MARCUS in Nevada Politics State Historian, Nevada National Guard Th e Political History of Nevada is the quintessential reference book of Nevada elections and past public servants of this State. Journalists, authors, politicians, and historians have used this offi cial reference for a variety of questions. In 1910, the Nevada Secretary of State’s Offi ce fi rst compiled the data. Th e Offi ce updated the data 30 years later in 1940 “to meet a very defi nite and increasing interest in the political history of Nevada,” and has periodically updated it since. Th is is the fi rst edition following the Silver State’s sesquicentennial, and the State’s yearlong celebration of 150 years of Statehood in 2014. But this brief article will look to examine something other than political data. It’s more about the body of historical work concerning the subject of Nevada’s political history—a brief historiography. A short list of its contributors includes Dan De Quille and Mark Twain; Sam Davis and James Scrugham; Jeanne Wier and Anne Martin; Richard Lillard and Gilman Ostrander; Mary Ellen Glass and Effi e Mona Mack; Russell Elliott and James Hulse; William Rowley and Michael Green. Th eir works standout as essential secondary sources of Nevada history. For instance, Twain’s Roughing It (1872), De Quille’s Big Bonanza (1876) and Eliot Lord’s Comstock Mining & Mines (1883) off er an in-depth and anecdote-rich— whether fact or fi ction—glance into early Nevada and its mining camp way of life. -

Las Vegas Sands Corp. owns the Venetian, which is hosting the debate, and it owns the adjoining Palazzo Resort-Hotel- Casino, where Perry bedded down the night of his son’s party. The head of Las Vegas Sands, Sheldon Adelson, has been a Perry supporter since 2007. Perry’s campaign reported that he flew to Vegas on October 24, 2009 to meet Brian Sandoval, who was then running a successful GOP campaign to be governor of Nevada. Days later the campaign acknowledged to the Dallas Morning News that on that same Vegas trip Perry also attended a bachelor party that the male friends of his son, Griffin, held to celebrate the younger Perry’s upcoming wedding.1 Perry previously reported that casino owner Adelson contributed a $1,856 in-kind “event expense” to the Perry campaign on December 7, 2007. Perry’s campaign reported that one of its fundraisers, Krystie Alvarado, flew to Vegas a day earlier for a fundraiser. The campaign reported that Flatonia, Texas sausage magnate Danny Janecka then flew Governor Perry to Vegas on December 9, 2007 for a fundraiser. -

COMPLAINT Complainant files this complaint under 2 U.S.C. § 437g(a)(l) againsc Norm Coleman, requesting that the Federal Election Commission investigate violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act, as described below. A. FACTUAL ALLEGATIONS Norm Coleman is a former United States Senator from the state of Minnesota. He was a candidate lor the United Stales Senate during the 2008 election cycle. On October 27, 2008, Paul McKim, Lhe founder and CEO of Houston-based Deep Marine Technologies ("DMT"), filed a sworn, notarized complaint in Texas state court against a group of DMT directors. In his complaint, McKim alleged that Nasser Kazeminy, a former controlling shareholder of DMT and a close friend of Coleman's, transferred $75,000 to Colemnn (a fourth installment of $25,000 was blocked by McKim). The payments were disguised as payments for insurance, and were fimneled through Coleman's wife's employer, the Plays Companies, an insurance broker in Minneapolis. A copy of the complaint is at Inched as Attachment A. -1- A recent sworn deposition, signed by another DMT executive, corroborates this story. According to BJ. Thomas, who was Chief Financial Officer of DMT at the time, Kazcminy attempted to Tunnel $100,000 lo Colcman through Ihc Hays Companies. PERMANENT SUBCOMMITTEE ON INVESTIGATIONS HISTORICAL BACKGROUND A. Subcommittee Jurisdiction The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations was originally authorized by Senate Resolution 189 on January 28, 1948. At its creation in 1948, the Subcommittee was part of the Committee on Expenditures in the Executive Departments. The Subcommittee’s records and broad investigative jurisdiction over government operations and national security issues, however, actually antedate its creation, since it was given custody of the jurisdiction of the former Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program (the so-called “War Investigating Committee” or “Truman Committee”), chaired by Senator Harry S. Truman during the Second World War and charged with exposing waste, fraud, and abuse in the war effort and war profiteering. Today, the Subcommittee is part of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.1 The Subcommittee has had nine chairmen: Senators Homer Ferguson of Michigan (1948), Clyde R. Hoey of North Carolina (1949-1952), Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin (1953- 1954), John L. McClellan of Arkansas (1955-1972), Henry M. Jackson of Washington (1973- 1978), Sam Nunn of Georgia (1979-1980 and 1987-1994), William V. Roth of Delaware (1981- 1986 and 1995-1996), Susan M. Collins of Maine (1997-2001); Norm Coleman of Minnesota (2003-2007); and Carl Levin of Michigan (2001-2002 and 2007-2014). Until 1957, the Subcommittee’s jurisdiction focused principally on waste, inefficiency, impropriety, and illegality in government operations.
