We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.

  • Big Sid” Catlett: the Development of Modern Jazz Drumming Style”
ARTIMISI, ANTHONY B., D.M.A. The Study of Jeff Porcaro's Musical Style and the Development of an Analytical Model for the Study of Drum Set Style in Popular Music. (2011) Directed by Dr. David Nelson and Dr. Kristopher Keeton. 206 pp. Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro was one of the preeminent drummers from the middle of the 1970‘s through his untimely passing on August 5, 1992. He was a founding member of the Grammy Award winning band, Toto, and the list of albums on which his drumming appears includes six hundred ninety-three entries. His willingness to help others and commitment to excellence made a lasting impact on the drumming community and the music industry as a whole. The goal of this research was to complete an analysis of Porcaro‘s drumming style. In order to accomplish this goal, a model was developed that allowed for the analysis of drum set performance based on Robert Breithaupt‘s article entitled ―Musical Considerations for Drumset Improvisation.‖ This article identified nine strategies teachers can use with young students regarding drum set improvisation. Seven of these strategies were used to form a comparative analytical model of musical elements which created a summary of drumming style implemented on Jeff Porcaro for the purposes of this paper: Dynamics, Rate of Strokes, Accents, Rests and Rhythmic Figures, Unisons, Hand-to-Foot Distribution and Special Effects. Porcaro‘s peers and colleagues identified six songs as being representative of his drumming: Boz Scaggs‘s ―Lowdown,‖ ―Lido Shuffle,‖ ―Gimme the Goods‖ and ―Jojo,‖ Steely Dan‘s ―Gaucho,‖ and Toto‘s ―Rosanna.‖ The analytical model applied to the choruses of these songs shows that Porcaro manipulated the different musical elements in a variety of way in order to build to a musical peak during the final chorus of each song.

  • Antimodernism and Genre from Country-Rock to Alt.Country, 1968-98
Antimodernism and Genre from Country-Rock to Alt.Country, 1968-98 Jason Bianchi Kirby San Jose, California B.A. Sociology and Literature, University of California—Santa Cruz, 2002 M.A. American Culture Studies, Bowling Green State University, 2006 A dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Virginia August 2016 Abstract This dissertation is a cultural history exploring expressions of and responses to antimodernism within country-rock and “alternative country” music, drawing on reception history, intellectual history of underground and mainstream left-wing American political movements, interview discourse with artists, and close readings of songs. In this dissertation I argue that despite styling itself as a type of purer root or “folk” form of contemporary country music, in terms of its ideologies, studio production techniques, fan and critical discourse, and business practices, alt.country is a type of rock music. It embodies some of rock’s core beliefs, particularly rock’s critique of the more bureaucratic and “rationalized” dimensions of postindustrial capitalism, particularly as this relates to the everyday impact of new technologies. I argue that this anti-modernism, emerging here from the American political left, has been different in different eras, from the back-to-the-land movement of the late 1960s, to late- ‘80s/early-‘90s expressions of left populist punk’s longing for “folk” community. In this project I look beyond contemporary scholarly understandings of alt.country as mostly ironic, as ultimately I suggest that this music illustrates what Keir Keightley calls rock’s aesthetic of “seriousness,” more precisely than it does an understanding of country music ideology.

  • Grievous Angel: Gram Parsons and the Country Rock Movement
GRIEVOUS ANGEL: GRAM PARSONS AND THE COUNTRY ROCK MOVEMENT BY JOHN F. STANISLAWSKI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Jeffrey Magee, Chair Associate Professor Gayle Sherwood Magee Associate Professor Gabriel Solis Associate Professor Jim Hansen ABSTRACT The country rock movement emerged in Southern California in the mid-1960s and was comprised of musicians who, through diverse musical practices and conceptual means, sought to fuse elements of country music with other popular genres. Developing amidst the social and political turmoil that defined the era, country rock provided a space for musicians and listeners to negotiate both musical and cultural boundaries. This dissertation provides a critical analysis of the life, legacy, and music of one of the movement’s central figures: Gram Parsons. Since his death in 1973 at the age of 26, interest in Parsons has steadily increased such that today he is hailed by many critics and fans as the “father of country rock” and the movement’s most influential artist. Much of this posthumous recognition is rooted in idealizations of Parsons’s Southernness, experiences of familial tragedy, fusions of country, rock, blues, and soul, or what he famously called, “cosmic American music,” and the bizarre details of his death. Intended to forge links between Parsons’s biography, music, and idiosyncratic personal style, these elements have been foregrounded by listeners in a way that has allowed Parsons to transcend the limited commercial success he received during his lifetime to attain a nearly mythical status.

Genesis are among the top 30 highest-selling recording artists of all time, with approximately 150 million albums sold worldwide.1 In the late 1960s, with the release of their first album, Genesis's music was in itially regarded by the band and the fans as a pop experiment, referring to then -popular melodic pop.2 Then, over the course of a year, (beginning with their se cond album in mid-1970) they quickly evolved into a progressive rock band with t he incorporation of complex song structures and elaborate instrumentation. Their concerts became theatrical experiences with innovative stage design, pyrotechni cs, extravagant costumes and on-stage stories. This second phase was characteris ed by lengthy performances such as the 23 minute "Supper's Ready" and the 1974 c oncept album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. In the late 70's and early 80's th e band's musical direction changed once again, becoming more pop oriented and co mmercially accessible.
