Spiritual Caregiving silence: an exploration of the phenomenon and its value in end of life care, PhD Palliative Care, December 2016 Abstract Towards the end of life, silence seems to take increasing prominence in caregiving relationships. A complex phenomenon, silence has been less explored than verbal interventions, yet to be an effective element of care, silence requires skill and practice from professional caregivers. This research, undertaken in the United Kingdom between 2013 and 2016, sought a deeper understanding of a type of silence that contributes to palliative spiritual care. A two phase phenomenological methodology was adopted, using heuristic inquiry and hermeneutic phenomenology. Data were gathered through self-inquiry and unstructured interviews with 15 palliative care chaplains. A descriptive and hermeneutic analysis facilitated explication of the lived experience to produce an interpretation of the nature, meaning and value of spiritual caregiving silence in end-of-life care. Spiritual caregiving silence emerges as a way of being with another person, complementary to speech and non-verbal communication, in which the caregiver takes both an active and participative role. It evokes a sense of companionship and connection and creates accompanied space, allowing the other person to be with themselves in a way they may not be able to be alone; this demands a depth of engagement from the caregiver. Silence provides a means of, and medium for, communication beyond the capacity of words and has the potential to enable change, leading to expression and acknowledgment of truth. It offers patients, and their families, opportunities to find acceptance, restoration and peace. The thesis concludes that spiritual caregiving silence is a person-centred phenomenon that supports the wellbeing of patients at the end of life, and their family members, by drawing on cross-disciplinary knowledge and experience. The interpretive process, illuminated by examples of specialist lived experience, has produced a deeper understanding of the phenomenon that may find resonance with the experience of other caregivers,     Chapter II Relevance of Mauna in Various Systems Introduction Spiritual traditions emphasize, explicitly or implicitly, the importance of practicing Mauna. Mauna or Silence in spirituality is often a symbol for inner stillness. Many religious traditions indicate the importance of being quiet and still in body and mind for transformative and essential spiritual growth to occur. Silence has been practiced throughout the ages. 'Be still and know that I am God', said the Psalmist1. 'He who knows does not speak', said Lao-tzu2. When Buddha was asked to state the duty of a disciple, he took the golden flower and gazed on it in silence; he was silent when questioned about the nature of Reality and Nirvāṇa. For thirty-two years the life of Jesus is shrouded in silence and to what extent he practiced silence during those years is unknown; but often he was in silence, and when questioned by Pilate about the nature of Truth, said nothing. The second-century Saint Ignatius of Antioch said: “He who also possesses ‘Jesus' word is able also to hear his silence, in order that he may be perfect, so that he may act through his words and may be known through his silences”3. Plotinus declared: “You should not ask questions but understand keeping silence, as I keep silence, for I am not in the habit of speaking”4. The sixth-century Armenian saint, known as John the Silent, was a Bishop at twenty-eight, and ten years later became a 'walled-up' recluse, but lived to be a very old man.

Brown Abstract A monk’s purpose is to seek God, and contemplative monks in the Roman Catholic tradition are specifically called to seek God in place. Drawing from biblical motifs, religious symbols, spiritual teachings and monastic traditions, monastic communities have forged deep and abiding relationships with their rural and wild locales. While many of the studies concerning monasticism’s relationship to land engage historical and theological dimensions, far fewer give adequate voice to the range of lived perspectives of contemporary monks themselves. Exploring research questions focused on the relationship between environmental discourses and contemporary monastic spirituality, during field work conducted between December 2015 and May 2016, I interviewed 50 male monastics at four monastic communities through both seated and walking interviews. Embedded in the interdisciplinary literature of place and landscape studies, my findings are interpreted through the lens of recent debates regarding the role of cognitively or socially constructed discourses in the experience of landscape. Socially constructed or “representational” perspectives emphasize the semiotic character of experience and meaning making with place and landscape. Rooted in identity, gender, class, ideology or religion, we project meaning onto an otherwise meaningless objective landscape.

One example of this has been the creation of opportunities for monastic experience for people. Since 2002 a South Korean Benedictine monastery has provided “The Monastery Stay” experience for people. Participants in the experience live in the same way as the monks do, completely isolated from their everyday lives for a period of a few days.

Religious men and women make an integral contribution to the society through their institutions in the fields of education, spirituality, medical care, social services, and other charitable activities. In the present context of India, however, consecrated men and women can experience challenges of relevance and identity in their vocations. These concerns have their basis in the fundamental need for a renewal of religious life itself in India, one which is imbued with a Christ-centered spirituality and reflects the prophetic charism that marks apostolic religious life.
