1 Assessment of Options for Handling Full Unicode Character Encodings in MARC21 A Study for the Library of Congress Part 1: New Scripts Jack Cain Senior Consultant Trylus Computing, Toronto 1 Purpose This assessment intends to study the issues and make recommendations on the possible expansion of the character set repertoire for bibliographic records in MARC21 format. 1.1 “Encoding Scheme” vs. “Repertoire” An encoding scheme contains codes by which characters are represented in computer memory. These codes are organized according to a certain methodology called an encoding scheme. The list of all characters so encoded is referred to as the “repertoire” of characters in the given encoding schemes. For example, ASCII is one encoding scheme, perhaps the one best known to the average non-technical person in North America. “A”, “B”, & “C” are three characters in the repertoire of this encoding scheme. These three characters are assigned encodings 41, 42 & 43 in ASCII (expressed here in hexadecimal). 1.2 MARC8 "MARC8" is the term commonly used to refer both to the encoding scheme and its repertoire as used in MARC records up to 1998. The ‘8’ refers to the fact that, unlike Unicode which is a multi-byte per character code set, the MARC8 encoding scheme is principally made up of multiple one byte tables in which each character is encoded using a single 8 bit byte. (It also includes the EACC set which actually uses fixed length 3 bytes per character.) (For details on MARC8 and its specifications see: http://www.loc.gov/marc/.) MARC8 was introduced around 1968 and was initially limited to essentially Latin script only. -

Title of article: Decoding and Encoding the Discourse meaning of Punctuation: a Perspective from English-to-Chinese Translation Author: Dr Caiwen Wang, University of Westminster, London, UK Email: [email protected] - 1 - Decoding and Encoding the Discourse meaning of Punctuation: a Perspective from English-to-Chinese Translation Abstract: This exploratory research examines translation students’ use of punctuation, by applying Newmark’s (1988) classical idea of punctuation as a discourse unit for meaning demarcation. Data was collected from a group of 25 Chinese students studying specialised translation at a British university. The research focuses on the use of two punctuation marks: comma and period or full stop. The aim is to investigate how students of translation analyse the meaning of a source text with punctuation marks and how they subsequently convert this meaning into the target language again using punctuation marks. It is found that students generally do not mechanically copy the punctuation marks of a source text into the translation. They will customize or modify the original punctuation marks according to their meaning analysis of the text and their knowledge of punctuation in source and target languages. Finally, we will discuss the implications of the research for translation education. Key words: Punctuation; semantic relationship; discourse; translation pedagogy 1. Introduction This research is an attempt to enrich data for filling the gap summarised by Rodríguez-Castro, which is that ‘[i]n the scholarly research in Translation Studies, the study of punctuation has not attracted much attention either from professionals or from researchers’ (2011:43). The research especially draws inspiration from a Master student doing her end-of-year Translation Project, where she and I, as her supervisor, discussed punctuation use in depth. -

The HKSCS-2001, HKSCS-2004 and HKSCS-2008 were published with 116, 123 and 68 new characters added respectively. A total of 5 009 characters were included in the HKSCS-2008. These publications formed the foundation for promoting the adoption of the ISO/IEC 10646 international coding standard, and were widely supported and adopted by the IT sector and members of the public. Ideophones are defined as a set of words that are phonologically and morphologically marked and depict some form of sensory image (Dingemanse 2011b). Middle Chinese has a large body of ideophones, whose domains range from the depiction of sound, movement, visual and other external senses to the depiction of internal senses (cf. Dingemanse 2012a). There is some work on modern variants of Sinitic languages (cf. Mok 2001; Bodomo 2006; de Sousa 2008; de Sousa 2011; Meng 2012; Wu 2014), but so far, there is no encompassing study of ideophones of a stage in the historical development of Sinitic languages. The purpose of this study is to develop a descriptive model for ideophones in Middle Chinese, which is compatible with what we know about them cross-linguistically. The main research question of this study is “what are the phonological, morphological, semantic and syntactic features of ideophones in Middle Chinese?” This question is studied in terms of three parameters, viz. the parameters of form, of meaning and of use. -

Uvodoma predstavimo stanje s pisavami v prostih programskih okoljih in motive za izdelavo prostih pisav. Osrednji del prispevka je namenjen opisu zasnove tipografije, ki vkljucujeˇ pismenke iz razlicnihˇ pisav. Sledi opis razlogov, zakaj je OpenType najboljsaˇ trenutno dostopna tehnologija. Zakljucimoˇ s pregledom stanja projekta in nacrtiˇ za delo v prihodnje. 1. Uvod se porajajo tako v akademskih jezikoslovnih krogih kot tudi “na terenu”, torej v okoljih, kjer ziˇ vijo govorci jezikov, ki Prosti operacijski sistemi, kot so GNU/Linux ter sistemi te pismenke uporabljajo. Chinese Language Courses for Overseas Students
Introduction to The Centre for Language and Culture The Centre for Language and Culture, which is part of The School for Chinese as a Second Language, offers non-degree Chinese language courses for overseas students. Course Levels: Our centre provides ten levels of Chinese language courses. There are four elementary levels (Chuji 1, 2, 3, 4), four intermediate levels (Zhongji 1, 2, 3, 4) and two advanced levels (Gaoji 1, 2). Each course is for one semester (17 weeks) in duration, and students will generally not move classes during that semester. Students are allocated to levels mainly according to the results of their placement exam. Please remember that all of these courses are designed as full-time courses, and require both in-class and outside-class study. In additional to the 20 periods (45 minutes per period) of classes per week, it is expected that students will need to independently study outside of class on average about ten hours every week. Students who fail to study outside of class will almost certainly fall behind in class. Chuji 1 is for absolute beginners. Chuji 2 is for those who know Pinyin and a little bit of basic Chinese. (Studied previously for less than 100 hours.*) Chiji 3 is for those who know five to six hundred words. (Studied previously for about 200 – 300 hours.*) Chuji 4 is for those who know six to seven hundred words. (Studied previously for about 250 – 350 hours.*) Zhongji 1 and 2 are for those who know more than 1000 words. (Studied previously for about 400 – 600 hours.*) Zhongji 3 and 4 are for those who know more than 2000 words.
