Propagation and Nursery Systems in the Piedmont Region Of EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE TEA (CAMELLIA SINENSIS L. KUNTZE) PROPAGATION AND NURSERY SYSTEMS IN THE PIEDMONT REGION OF GEORGIA By Jeffrey McConnaughey1 Under the Direction of John Ruter ABSTRACT In order to identify efficient methods of producing field-ready tea (Camellia sinensis) liners in the southeastern U.S., studies were undertaken to measure the growth of young tea liners under alternative propagation systems and their respective costs of production. Single-node tea cuttings were rooted in three rooting substrates in containers in a greenhouse as well as in native soil and a layer of sand in-ground under shaded low tunnels with or without biofumigation treatments. Strike rates, biomass, and root length were measured 20 weeks after sticking. Rooted liners were then transplanted from the ground or containers to pots or left in situ under 20% shade. Survival, biomass and leaf area were measured 27 weeks later in late May. Marketability rates were determined in September. Production costs for each system were then accounted and estimated across variable scales of production for cost-volume-profit analysis and the NPV of purchasing liners rather than propagating them on-farm for prospective tea growers. Socio-cultural history of tea had not been well-studied field in the Soviet historiography, but in the recent years, some of historians work on this theme because of the diversification of subjects in the Russian historiography. The paper provides an overview of early encounters of tea in Russia in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, comparing with other beverages that were drunk at that time. The paper sheds light on the two supply routes of tea to Russia, one from Mongolia and China, and the other from Europe. Drinking of brick tea did not become a custom in the 18th century, but tea consumption had bloomed since 19th century, rapidly increasing the import of tea. The main part of the paper clarifies how Russian- Chines trade at Khakhta had been interrelated to the consumption of tea in Russia. Finally, the paper shows how the Russian tea culture formation followed a different path from that of the tea culture of Europe.

Abstract Tea industry is an agro-based export oriented industry in Bangladesh for over a century. Started from establishing Malnicherra Tea Estate in 1857 in Sylhet, now the number of tea estates have reached at 158 and tea industry has spread over Moulvibazar, Habigonj, Rangamati and Brahmanbaria.We produce only 2% of global tea production and we are earning near about two hundred crore taka in every year. The various stages of tea manufacturing are: Withering, Rolling, Fermenting, Drying/Firing, Sorting & grading, Tea tasting, Packaging etc. Now tea estates are facing various problems, which must be solved to save the tea industry. Tea is a safe and healthy beverage, which has also medicinal value. We have to intensify our race to reach a target of 1500 Kg/ha by 2010 A.D. to produce 90 million Kg made tea and to increase our area by about 1650 ha. This will satisfy our increasing domestic need and at least maintain the present ratio of the export of tea. We have to make quality tea, which must satisfy the prescribed criterion of the European countries to restore its name and fame. This must be done for the sake of increasing export volume and its existence. This paper includes introduction, global scenario, specification for black tea-ISO standard 3720, manufacturing of black tea, problems of the tea industries in Bangladesh, remedies and recommendations, prospects of the tea industry in Bangladesh, tea: its use as a medicine, conclusion, and references.

Abstract China was the first to produce tea and consumed the largest quantities and its craftsmanship was the finest. During the development of Chinese history, Chinese Tea culture came into being. In ancient China, drinking tea is not only a very common phenomenon but also an elegant taste for men of letters and officials. Chinese tea culture is extensive and profound and it is necessary for foreigners to understand Chinese tea culture for the purpose of smooth and deepen the communication with the Chinese people.
