Junior Boot Camp By Adriel Basulto

In light of the ongoing pandemic, schools, along with many of the activities that are attached to it, have been canceled for the foreseeable future with one such activity being the junior boot camp. Despite the obstacles brought upon us, there still remains hope, as efforts are being made to run the junior boot camp through online measures. But before discussing what is being done to preserve the boot camp, we need to know what it is.

Like many other school activities, the junior boot camp is a face to face affair, which Photo by NHS would provide juniors with resources about what should be done as they enter their senior year in terms of college applications. Economic Effects By Steven Ponce De Leon

Since the start and spread of the virus, the United States’ economy and the glob- al economy as a whole have been stumbling into negative territory. The Dow Jones In- dustrial Average has lost nearly 35% of the gain it took three years to accumulate; small businesses struggle to keep open and most, if not all, are closed; many have lost their jobs. The demand side of the economy has been hurt, and the strong American bull market has been lost. The impact that the coronavirus has had on the United States has been unprece- dented and has left the outlook for the future state of the economy filled with uncertainty.

With millions facing unemployment and businesses in a steep decline, policy- makers quickly look for ways to implement monetary and fiscal policies that will help stabilize the economy and bring back prosperity. In response, President Trump announced “an economic assistance package to help support businesses and workers who have been harmed by this outbreak.” The president also instructed the department of treasury “to defer tax payments for certain individuals and businesses negatively impacted by the coro- navirus.” The effect of these actions provide the current economy with an additional $200 billion in liquidity, which in turn will provide citizens and businesses with more money as income. These policies are just two of many that have been implemented to lessen the impacts of the virus and are hopefully the first steps in stabilizing the American economy.

Businesses most affected by the virus are the service, food, and hospitality in- dustry, as well as the entertainment, retail, transportation and travel sectors. Several major stocks in these industries have dropped drastically, losing half their intrinsic value in some cases. Due to the underlying concerns about the virus, many analysts and prominent stock market investors worry that the extent of the virus can carry on further into the future because of the increase in unemployment and the demand side of the economy being torn down. Several sources such as the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Barron’s expect the economy to make a slower recovery in comparison to previous stock market drops. Nonetheless, health officials and the executive branch are still optimistic that they can fight this virus and, in due time, restore the markets to what they were before the coro- Illustration by Angelina Rubalcava navirus. Welcome to the twenty-first century; where everywhere you look, kids are dancing erratically to random songs that last a mere fifteen seconds then post their recordings on the internet. When did we all forget how to properly communicate?

I admit that I am as guilty as the next person, but it’s time to stare this addiction in the face. The itch you get to check your phone all the time is a blaring red flag telling you to cut down on the screen time. It’s understandable that phones are used for more than frivolous things. Teachers expect students to use their Internet both in and out of the classroom for work and educational purposes; however, when it comes to wasting time scrolling through social media until you can’t stop, this is when it becomes an issue. As the famous saying goes: too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

Do any of these sound familiar to you? • Withdrawal from family or social events in favor of cell phone use • Impulsive and constant checking of phone • Increased anxiety or irritability if phone is inaccessible

If so, start thinking about putting down your phone and going outside. As any other addiction, this one should be taken seriously as it requires lots of self-discipline. But it’s not as hard as you think. Start by engaging in conversation with your family. Some other fun activities to do include exercising, reading a book, playing a card game, writing down ideas or short stories - anything to keep you away from the monitor and invested into reality. In this time of quarantine, the easiest choice is to just succumb yourself to the power of a mobile device; however, this can be the ideal time to put all these tips into practice. It’s time to start the shutdown on your tech, and press the power button on the here and now. Mad Libs: It’s Corona Time By Adriel Basulto By Alana Demler
