Foram utilizadas armadilhas do tipo Malaise Diachlorini Lepiselaga albitarsis Macquart, 1850 (Townes, 1972). As armadilhas foram instaladas nos municípios de Arroio Grande (32° 13’ 22’’ S e 53° 11’ 57’’ W), Capão do Leão Diachlorini * Leucotabanus albibasis (Brèthes), 1910 (31° 48’ 16’’ S e 52° 24’ 13’’ W), Morro Redondo (31° 40’ 22’’ S e Diachlorini * Phaeotabanus limpidapex 52° 35’ 30’’ W) e Pelotas (31° 44’ 39’’ S e 52° 13’ 22’’ W). O material (Wiedemann), 1828 amostrado foi agrupado e analisado semanalmente conforme a data Diachlorini * Stenotabanus obscurus Kröber 1929 de retirada e local. This aspect of their biolgy has been little studied, although Fairchild (1953) summarized knowledge of the arboreal species and Chvala & Stary (1967) noted habitat referencs for Cuban speces. Philip (1978) and Fairchild (1973) noted preferences of certain species for the mangrove swamp habitat [Lutz, 1922: 148 had already noted that larvae of Tabanus obsoletus Wiedemann, 1821 live in that environment].

In the western hemisphere, horse flies are also called greenheads (especially in coastal areas).     ABSTRACT BAYLESS, KEITH MOHR. Phylogenomic Studies of Evolutionary Radiations of Diptera. (Under the direction of Dr. Brian M. Wiegmann.) Efforts to understand the evolutionary history of flies have been obstructed by the lack of resolution in major radiations. Diptera is a highly diverse branch on the tree of life, but this diversity accrued at an uneven pace. Some of radiations that contributed disproportionately to species diversity occurred contemporaneously, and understanding the relationships of these taxa can illuminate broad scale patterns. Relationships between some subordinate groups of taxa are notoriously difficult to untangle, and genomic data will address these problems at a new scale. This project will focus on two major radiations in Diptera: Tabanus horse flies and relatives, and acalyptrate Schizophora. Tabanus includes over one thousand species. Synthesis focused research on the group is stymied by its species richness, worldwide distribution, inconsistent diagnosis, and scale of undescribed diversity. Furthermore, the genus may be non-monophyletic with respect to more than 10 other lineages of horse flies. A groundwork phylogenetic study of worldwide Tabanus is needed to understand the evolution of this lineage and to make comprehensive taxonomic projects manageable. Data to address this question was collected from two different sources. A dataset including five genes was sequenced from ninety-four species in the Tabanus group, including nearly all genera of Tabanini and at least one species from every biogeographic region. Then a new data source from a next generation sequencing approach, Anchored Hybrid Enrichment exome capture, was used to accumulate a dataset including hundreds of genes for a subset of the taxa.

FAIRCHILD University of Minnesota Beginning in 1905, Dr. Adolfo Lutz published a considerable number of papers on South American Tabanidae, mainly the Brazil- ian fauna. He had evidently intended to monograph the fauna, and did treat the Pangoniinae, the Diachlorini and the genera Dichela- cera, Stibasoma and tcanthoc.era in a thorough way. His other publications on the family consisted mostly of local lists, descrip- tions of new species, and short papers outlining his views on the generic classification of the Neotropical species. In his papers of a monographic or revisional nature, Dr. L,utz appears to have well understood the rules governing zoological nomenclature, and new names appearing in these publications are for the most part validly proposed. In his papers on general classi- fication and in his local lists, however, which he seems to have con- sidered of a preliminary nature, it appears that he did not realize that the names he was using were then appearing for the first time and would have to be taken into consideration by subsequent stu- dents. In many cases these names were so casually proposed, either without adequate definition or without valid included species, and almost always without bibliographic reference, that it has proven very difficult to come to a decision on their validity. In other cases it has been difficult to decide on the year in which a certain name, published as new on several occasions, was validated. (Diptera: Tabanidae)1 Abstract. Diachlorini s. str. have a disjunctive distribution in the world, their occurrence being limited to 4 centres: American, Mediterranean, South African and Oriental-Australian. Speciation and dispersal centres are only found in tropical areas in South America and New Guinea. Diachlorini s. str. do not occur on the Asian continent, except for the Indian Peninsula (belonging to the Oriental Region) and a small stretch of the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea (belonging to the Mediterranean region). Relationships between the taxa of individual regions are discussed. Key words: Diptera. Tabanidae. Diachlorini, distribution, relationships, world. Wilcza 64, 00-679 Warszawa, POLAND INTRODUCTION A new division of the subfamily Tabaninae into tribes (TROJAN 1994, 1997) has made it possible to study the distribution pattern of Diachlorini s. str. and Lepidoselagini independently. Up till now interpretations of the distribution have been based on combined data on the occurrence of both these taxa (Mackerras 1954). At present, however, this approach cannot be utilised in either zoogeographical or evolution-related analyses. In my paper on the distribution of Lepidoselagini in the Northern Hemisphere (Trojan 1996) I have demonstrated that, contrary to earlier assumptions, this tribe does not have a Gondwanan distribution. There are numerous representatives of plesiomorphic Lepidoselagini in the Holarctic and their distribution suggests that the area of Laurasia was once inhabited by diverse forms belonging to this tribe.
