February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. • 30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom
30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Aaron: You know my work. Walk with me. I’m Aaron Sorkin. The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network.

  • Meet Me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the Protest Song Tradition on the Recent Work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012)
Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Meet me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the protest song tradition on the recent work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012) Supervisor: Paper submitted in partial Dr. Debora Van Durme fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of “Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde: Nederlands- Engels” by Michiel Vaernewyck May 2014 Word of thanks The completion of this master dissertation would not have been possible without the help of several people that have accompanied me on this road. First of all, thank you to my loving parents for their support throughout the years. While my father encouraged me to listen to an obscure, dusty vinyl record called The River, he as well as my mother taught me the love for literature and music. Thanks for encouraging me to express myself through writing and my own music, which is a gift that money just cannot buy. Secondly, thanks to my great friends of the past few years at Ghent University, although they frequently – but not unfairly – questioned my profound passion for Bruce Springsteen. Also, thank you to my supervisor dr. Debora Van Durme who provided detailed and useful feedback to this dissertation and who had the faith to endorse this thesis topic. I hope faith will be rewarded. Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who proofread sections of this paper and I hope that they will also be inspired by what words and music can do. As always, much love to Helena, number one Croatian Bruce fan. Thanks to Phantom Dan and the Big Man, for inspiring me over and over again.

A Long Walk Home: The Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S. Neiberg United States Army War College and Robert M. Citino National World War II Museum1 Abstract This article analyzes the themes of class and military service in the Springsteen canon. As a member of the baby boom generation who narrowly missed service in Vietnam, Springsteen’s reflection on these heretofore unappreciated themes should not be surprising. Springsteen’s emergence as a musician and American icon coincide with the end of conscription and the introduction of the All-Volunteer Force in 1973. He became an international superstar as Americans were debating the meaning of the post-Vietnam era and the patriotic resurgence of the Reagan era. Because of this context, Springsteen himself became involved in veterans issues and was a voice of protest against the 2003 Iraq War. In a well-known monologue from his Live 1975-85 box set (1986), Bruce Springsteen recalls arguing with his father Douglas about the younger Springsteen’s plans for his future. Whenever Bruce provided inadequate explanations for his life goals, Douglas responded that he could not wait for the Army to “make a man” out of his long-haired, seemingly aimless son. Springsteen 1 Copyright © Michael S. Neiberg and Robert M. Citino, 2016. Michael Neiberg would like to thank Derek Varble, with whom he saw Springsteen in concert in Denver in 2005, for his helpful comments on a draft of this article. Reichardt's dramas are small-scale symphonies; alchemical transmogrifications of the ordinary into gripping cinematic experiences. Often collaborating with the same creatives across multiple pictures, such as actor Michelle Williams and writer Jonathan Raymond, Reichardt's films turn the WENDY AND LUCY lens on those in some way at the margins of American communities. Be it a woman living out of her car in WENDY AND LUCY, a group of lost 1840s pioneers in MEEK'S CUTOFF, a reclusive ranch hand in CERTAIN WOMEN, or a hand-to-mouth ex-hippie in OLD JOY, Reichardt's characters, regardless of life circumstances, are deeply and richly human. There may be no other living filmmaker who so fully realizes Roger Ebert's assertion that "movies are the most powerful empathy machine in all the arts." All of which is to say nothing of her films' painterly cinematography, naturalistic and immersive sound design, and Reichardt's knack of scouting the perfect space for every scene, often in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. Reichardt and her work have been honored at the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, the BFI MEEK'S CUTOFF London Film Festival, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and more.

  • House Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence Hb 19
PUBLIC COMMENTS HB 19 HOUSE COMMITTEE ON JUDICIARY & CIVIL JURISPRUDENCE Hearing Date: March 9, 2021 10:00 AM Michael Gerke SELF Missouri City, TX This bill rewards bad actors. That is, companies who fail to train and properly hire drivers get to be dismissed from a case against them. This is a disincentive to do things the right way. And those companies who do hiring, training and safety the proper way, are placed at an economic disadvantage to those who do not. Bad bill. Texans lose on this one. Jason Boorstein Self Dallas, TX I became very concerned after reading the text of this bill. The bill aims to hurt individuals driving on our roads. I am concerned about commercial vehicles from Texas, other States and Countries getting a pass in Texas if they hurt or kill someone. I am concerned that if this bill passes, companies have less incentive to investigate bad drivers, self police their company, train and discipline. Please consider tabling this bill so that we can investigate the real ramification to Texans. Thank you. Guy Choate Webb, Stokes & Sparks, LLP San Angelo, TX I speak in opposition to this Bill. Texas highways would be made less safe by protecting the companies that put profits over safety as they put unsafe trucks and drivers on the road. Large trucks are disproportionately responsible for carnage on Texas highways. Trucking companies need more scrutiny, not less. Trucks do not have to be dangerous and truck drivers do not have to cause crashes. Good companies do not have the type of crashes that routinely plague Texas highways.

  • Podcast #44- a Psychologist Analyzes Bruce Springsteen I Want to Offer up Some Thoughts About the Psychology of Bruce
1 Podcast #44- A Psychologist Analyzes Bruce Springsteen I want to offer up some thoughts about the psychology of Bruce Springsteen today. Now, Springsteen’s psyche isn’t the easiest thing for me to analyze, I must admit. The reason is that he is also my musical hero. I’ve been a fan since 1969 when he ruled the musical scene on the Jersey Shore where I grew up. In fact, he lived in my neighborhood and played at my high school prom. So, I love his music and, well, frankly, I idealize him as a performer and songwriter. Just as shrinks aren’t supposed to treat anyone in their own family, so too it feels awkward wearing my therapist hat trying to understand Springsteen’s psyche. It’s hard to be objective. Fortunately, I’m greatly aided by his highly revealing and soul-searching autobiography, Born to Run, and, secondarily by his intimate storytelling in his one-man Broadway show, Springsteen on Broadway. Springsteen’s ruthless honesty and clear-eyed introspection no doubt derive, in part, from the fact that he has been in psychotherapy for over 30 years, much of it with 2 psychiatrist, Wayne Myers—therapeutic work that he says lay at the heart of the autobiography. For someone so prominent to talk about his mental illness—in Springsteen’s case it was a profound and long standing depression--has made it safe for others to do the same. Springsteen’s depression found its roots in a childhood filled with neglect, emotional cruelty, and unstable attachments. His father, Doug, was an explosive alcoholic tormented by persecutory and paranoid thoughts.
