Tuberaria guttata (L.) Fourr Spotted Rock-rose Tuberaria guttata flowers from May to June and is best searched for on warm and sunny mornings when the bright yellow, purple- blotched petals open widely and are readily visible. Populations are known from northern Wales, western and south-western Ireland, the Channel Islands and western Scotland, although there are doubts about its provenance at the sole Scottish locality. It occurs at coastal locations in exposed, well-drained rocky outcrops on moderately acidic shallow peats, typically where there is sparse vegetation cover, making populations particularly vulnerable to the encroachment of more competitive vegetation. It is assessed as Near Threatened in Britain, but is of Least Concern in Wales. ©Joh n Crellin IDENTIFICATION HABITATS In flower T. guttata is unmistakable, with bright yellow petals In Britain and Ireland T. guttata grows on exposed rocky that have purple blotches and opposite leaves that are three- outcrops in bare open stony or peaty patches amongst species- v eined and turn reddish with age. Plants are variable in size, poor Calluna vulgaris-Scilla verna and C. vulgaris-Erica ranging from solitary flowers on short stems (1-2 cm) in cinerea heathland (NVC H7, H10), and more rarely Festuca exposed sites to much taller (to 20 cm) branched stems with ovina-Agrostis capillaris-Galium saxatile (NVC U4d) multiple flowers in more sheltered localities. grassland. Tuberaria guttata tends to be concentrated where there is a SIMILAR SPECIES sparse cov er of grasses, ericaceous shrubs and other small herbs, and often grows in a thin carpet of mosses and lichens. -

The present paper deals with the species of Crambidae of the Austrian province of Salzburg. MITTERBERGER (1909) lists 77 species while today 118 species are recorded for the fauna of Salzburg. Five species listed in HUEMER & TARMANN (1993) must be removed, another 11 species are new to the fauna of Salzburg. The occurrence of one out of two species in HUEMER & TARMANN (1993) provided with a question mark is confirmed. Zusammenfassung Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Crambidae des Landes Salzburg (Österreich). Während in MITTERBERGER (1909) 77 Arten für Salzburgs Fauna aufgelistet sind, gelten derzeit 118 Spezies als nachgewiesen. Aus der Liste von HUEMER & TARMANN (1993) müssen fünf Arten ausgeschieden wer- den, während elf Arten als neu für die Fauna Salzburgs hinzu kommen. Das Vorkommen einer von zwei in HUEMER & TARMANN (1993) mit einem Fragezeichen versehenen Arten konnte bestätigt werden. Einleitung Die Serie von Berichten über die Salzburger Mikrolepidopterenfauna wird mit dem aktuellen Bearbeitungsstand der Familie Crambidae fortgesetzt (Scopariinae, Crambinae, Schoenobiinae, Odontiinae, Evergestinae, Cathariinae und Pyraustinae). Während in einer ersten Arbeit über die Salzburger Pyralioidea (EMBACHER 1998) die Verbreitung der Arten in den Salzburger Landesteilen im Mittelpunkt stand, sollen hier neben Ergänzungen und Berichtigungen auch alle dem Autor bekannten Literaturangaben aufgeführt werden, die Informationen über die Arten der Familie Crambidae enthalten. -

Soza, [email protected] Abstract Rubieae are centered in temperate regions and characterized by whorls of leaf-like structures on their stems. Previous studies that primarily included Old World taxa identified seven major clades with no resolution between and within clades. In this study, a molecular phylogeny of the tribe, based on three chloroplast regions (rpoB-trnC, trnC-psbM, trnL-trnF-ndhJ) from 126 Old and New World taxa, is estimated using parsimony and Bayesian analyses. Seven major clades are strongly supported within the tribe, confirming previous studies. Relationships within and between these seven major clades are also strongly supported. In addition, the position of Callipeltis, a previously unsampled genus, is identified. The resulting phylogeny is used to examine geographic distribution patterns and evolution of leaf-like whorls in the tribe. An Old World origin of the tribe is inferred from parsimony and likelihood ancestral state reconstructions. At least eight subsequent dispersal events into North America occurred from Old World ancestors. From one of these dispersal events, a radiation into North America, followed by subsequent diversification in South America, occurred. Parsimony and likelihood ancestral state reconstructions infer the ancestral whorl morphology of the tribe as composed of six organs. Whorls composed of four organs are derived from whorls with six or more organs. -

We loaded up and set off on the 2½ hour drive down the auto-route towards the mountains and our hotel at Gèdre. Black Kite, Crag Martin and a flock of Cattle Egrets were the only notable birds seen en-route. Exiting the motorway, we skirted the pilgrimage town of Lourdes and entered the narrowing gorge of the fast flowing Gave de Gavarnie stream, which tumbles all the way down from the Spanish border. Soon after passing the famous Pont Napoleon Bridge, just upstream of the spa town of Luz St Saveur, we reached our destination, where our amiable hosts Odile and Philippe promptly allocated us to our rooms. We then enjoyed the first of many delicious dinners that we were to have during the forthcoming week. Day 2 Friday 6th July Sunny periods, cool It was cool but fine, as we headed up the Heas Valley for our first full day in the field, immediately having an unpleasant surprise when we found that the narrow winding road up to the Barrage des Gloriettes, our intended destination for the day, was blocked. -

Flowering Plants and Ferns of Keele University David W. Emley Updated June 2019 Keele is perhaps more interesting for its trees than for its flowering plants, however there are a few unusual species amongst them. The deciduous woodland, consisting mainly of Oak and Sycamore, has a poor ground flora which makes for a fine display of Bluebells in the spring. It also has Yellow Archangel, a plant associated with ancient woodland as well as the lovely Wood Sorrel. The former sewage-works site, just south of Lake 5, was once home to a small colony of Harebell and Betony. The area between that site and the entrance to Lymes Road used to be very good for plants. Indeed, there was a colony of Common Spotted Orchids and a few Northern Marsh Orchids. These appear to have gone - it is too overgrown now. The small gully that leads into Lake 7 is lined with Bluebells but also Ramsons or Wild Garlic; its main site at Keele. Keele has a good bramble flora and is the type locality for Rubus sneydii, named by Eric Edees; a national expert on brambles who lived nearby. One plant, Rhododendron ponticum, is causing problems in the deciduous woodland where it is very invasive and is unfortunately the host of Phytophthora ramorum. This virus can seriously affect oaks, larches and many other trees. Because of this Keele has to remove all its Larch and most of its Rhododendron. This will, of course, open up the woodland to let the native ground flora grow up and extensive replanting with native trees is scheduled to start in autumn 2015. -

The aim of the study was to look at two different survey methods for plants, the soil environmental DNA sampling and the regularly used above ground survey, and whether they yielded similar conclusions regarding alpha diversity, community and taxonomic composition. The project was done under the wings of the large Biowide project, and was supervised by Rasmus Ejrnæs, Aarhus University, Department of Bioscience – Biodiversity and Conservation, Grenåvej 14, 8416 Rønde, and Tobias Frøslev, Copenhagen University, Centre for GeoGenetics, Universitetsparken 15, 2100 København Ø. The thesis contains two parts: the main thesis manuscript written in a paper structure, and a post script, where work not included in the main manuscript has been briefly described. -

LEPIDOPTERA FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTH WALES H. N. MICHAELIS An examination of records from North Wales suggests that very little work has been done on the butterflies and moths occurring on the higher parts of Snowdonia and other northern mountains. Species observed between 1964/1967 are listed below, together with short notes on foodplants and localities. It follows that species, larval foodplants, localities and possible maximum heights of occurrence cannot be complete over so short a period and there is scope for additional information on all points. So that species associated with deciduous trees should not be included, an arbitrary minimum altitude of 1500 feet was fixed to give a true picture of the high ground fauna. While it is known that plantations of conifers exist up to 1700 feet, these were avoided as creating arti- ficial shelter which could support species not found under normal mountain conditions. The occurrence of a species depends, among other factors, on the presence of one of its accepted foodplants and its numbers may be variable at high altitudes it may be plentiful in a sheltered hollow or fold of the ground and scarce on more exposed land at the same height. The number of true upland species found in the various localities is small, for many of those listed which feed on heather, bilberry, cotton grass, bedstraw, rushes, sedges etc., also occur on heaths and mosses even down to sea level. As far as possible both scientific and popular names are shown but this is not always possible with the so-called microlepidoptera, i.e., Pyraloidea onwards. -
