A total of 5 nudibranch species are reported from the Norwegian coast for the first time (Doridoxa ingolfiana, Goniodoris castanea, Onchidoris sparsa, Eubranchus rupium and Proctonotus mucro- niferus). In addition 10 species that can be considered rare in Norwegian waters are presented with new information (Lophodoris danielsseni, Onchidoris depressa, Palio nothus, Tritonia griegi, Tritonia lineata, Hero formosa, Janolus cristatus, Cumanotus beaumonti, Berghia norvegica and Calma glau- coides), in some cases with considerable changes to their distribution. These new results present an update to our previous extensive investigation of the nudibranch fauna of the Norwegian coast from 2005, which now totals 87 species. An increase in several new species to the Norwegian fauna and new records of rare species, some with considerable updates, in relatively few years results mainly from sampling effort and contributions by specialists on samples from poorly sampled areas. doi: 10.5324/fn.v31i0.1576. Seasearch Annual Report 2016
ANNUAL REPORT 2016 This report summarises Seasearch activities throughout Britain and Ireland in 2016. It includes a summary of the main surveys undertaken (pages 2-5), reports produced and a summary of the data collected. This includes records of Priority habitats and species, locally important features and nationally scarce and rare species (pages 6-9) and habitats (pages 9- 11). It also includes a summary of the training courses run for volunteer divers (page 12) and information on how Seasearch is organised and the data is managed and made available (page 13). All of the reports referred to may be downloaded from the Seasearch website and the species data may be accessed through the National Biodiversity Network website. More detailed datasets are available on request. Seasearch Surveys 2016 Seasearch continued to target much of its survey activity in existing and proposed marine protected areas. In England 23 new Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) were designated in January 2016, making a total of 50; four Northern Ireland MCZs, including the site at Waterfoot Bay proposed by Seasearch, were designated in December 2016. The following pages summarise the main surveys undertaken in 2016. They were arranged by Seasearch Coordinators and other volunteers; we would like to thank all of the organisations who supported survey activity at a local level. In addition to the surveys outlined here there were many other dives both organised by Seasearch coordinators and undertaken by individual divers. The map shows the location of all the 2016 dives. Data from all of the surveys has been entered into the Marine Recorder database and can be freely accessed on the National Biodiversity Network website www.nbn.org.uk. -

Marine Recorder's Report 2013. Following Jan Light's Departure
Marine Recorder’s Report 2013. Following Jan Light’s departure from the recorder post there was something of an inter-regnum, during which Bas Payne ably provided a hub for communication and kept things ticking over, but the role was not being actively promoted for some 18 months or so. Hence, upon being accepted by the Society as the new postholder, I was somewhat concerned that a degree of momentum would have been lost. Fortunately this has proved not to be the case, quite the opposite in fact, and if every year is as active and productive as 2013 then pursuing the role of the Society’s marine census recorder is going to be a very interesting challenge indeed. There were a few items pending from 2012 which are worthy of note, all involving opisthobranchs. Recent advances in underwater digital photography have massively improved the popularity and recording of nudibranchs in particular. It is therefore somewhat ironic that recent new records of the dorid Geitodoris planata (Alder & Hancock, 1846), the first for Yorkshire, were actually intertidal in rockpools (Whittaker, D.E. 2013 The Naturalist 138: 82-84). This species is common in the Mediterranean, its British distribution being focussed on the southwest; there are few old, disputed Scottish reports but these new confirmed records of a number of individuals now place the species firmly in the North Sea. While some species are extending their distribution northwards within the UK, others are apparently colonising our islands for the first time. One such, another dorid, is Cadlina pellucida (Risso, 1826), a rather attractive little ivory-coloured sea slug with black gills and rhinophores. -

The habitat engineered by this species was sampled and compared with the adjacent uncolonized Amphiura filiformis muddy habitat in winter and sum- mer. The isotopic signatures of macrofaunal and megafaunal species associated with both habitats were analysed along with potential food sources at each sampling period. Similar food web struc- tures for each habitat (and each season), with high δ15N ranges spanning over 3 trophic levels, were reported although omnivory was less frequent in the H. nirae habitat. The amphipod H. nirae appears to play a baseline role, with the lowest δ15N values and δ13C values indicating that it primarily feeds on phytoplankton. -

However, patchy research effort, the lack of pre-existing baseline data, and taxonomic uncertainty for some taxa means that unambiguous interpretation of observations is often difficult. Here, we propose that heterobranch sea slugs provide a useful target group for monitoring shifts in distribution. As many sea slugs are highly colourful, popular with underwater photographers and rock-pool ramblers, and found in accessible habitats, they provide an ideal target for citizen scientist programs, such as the Sea Slug Census. This maximises our ability to rapidly gain usable diversity and distributional data. Here, we review records of recent range extensions by tropical species into the subtropical and temperate waters of eastern Australia and document, for the first time in Australian waters, observations of three tropical species of sea slug as well as range extensions for a further six to various locations in the Tasman Sea. Connemara Nudibranch Species and Field Guide By Maja Stankovski Reefs, walls and wrecks in Connemara are teaming with different species of nudibranchs although that is not widely known. They are very easy to find on every dive site, you just need to know where and how to spot them. There are usually three things that nudis are doing underwater, so knowing that will help you spot them. They are feeding, fighting or mating, and they are usually found doing one of these things. People often ask me why I love to photograph nudibranchs so much and this is especially difficult to explain to a non-diver. My excitement over sea slugs just seems alien to them. But as an underwater photographer, nudibranchs are not only patient, slow moving and photogenic subjects; they also come in such huge varieties and colours. Although shooting nudis in cold water is not as easy as in tropical waters, quite often the surge doesn’t make it easy to take a sharp image and even their position doesn’t make a great photo. But with some perseverance, you can take some great shots. There are over 3000 known species of nudibranch and more are discovered constantly. Although they are fairly known in tropical waters and regularly noticed by divers, they are quite often missed or thought not to exist in cold water. Quite the opposite is true and you can find as colourful species in Ireland as you can in any tropical destination. There are over 70 known species only in Ireland. From my experience, living as such tiny subjects in a vast ocean, they have gained a huge respect. -
