Jazz en los Distritos 2 Jazz para una ciudad En la última edición de JAZZMADRID, la de 2016, ya se hizo obvio que ninguna programación musical con claro protagonismo jazzístico podía sustraerse a la influencia que, sobre el género afroamericano, han venido ejerciendo en las últimas décadas las diferentes músicas populares del mundo; una forma específica de penetración estética que encuentra razón de ser buscando enfoques alternativos para el acoplamiento entre el swing y la variada geografía sonora de la música popular. Este año, esa conexión es todavía más evidente. En algunos casos -como en los del laudista tunecino Anouar Brahem, la pianista griega Tania Giannouli o el vibrafonista etíope Mulatu Astatke-, esa relación se convierte, de hecho, en estrecho vínculo. Y junto a ellos, un año más se ha impuesto prestar atención especial a la producción local de nuestros músicos, dando, incluso, un paso más allá y llevando a escenarios de mayor aforo, como el del teatro Fernán Gómez, propuestas tan asentadas como las del pianista Moisés P. Sánchez, el trompetista David Pastor o el saxofonista Jorge Pardo. A este último, por su veteranía, por la valía de sus entregas, se le rinden sendos homenajes como titular al frente del proyecto Djinn, y como componente del histórico trío que completan Carles Benavent y Tino Di Geraldo. Este apartado local lo completan el Cuarteto Europa de Baldo Martínez; el quinteto de Guillermo McGill, el cuarteto de Pedro Iturralde, el proyecto Perico Sambeat Plays Zappa, y la marching band Nola Brass Band. En cualquier caso, estas grandes citas encuentran siempre justificación en la medida que incluyen también en su lista a creadores nuevos, o menos conocidos, que, de otro modo, difícilmente, encontrarían acomodo en los circuitos. Por eso, y por su obvia calidad, están en el programa Maciej Obara, Melissa Aldana, Shai Maestro, Cyrille Aymée, Cory Henry, Becca Stevens o Collective. Los artistas consagrados, con sus proyectos más recientes, tienen igualmente un espacio fundamental: Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Sheila Jordan, Carla Bley, Dave Holland, Jean Luc Ponty, Pedro Iturralde, James Carter y Philip Catherine, entre otros. Todos crecen en número, con respecto a ediciones anteriores y la oferta también se hace más plural. Habrá, por ejemplo, algo de aventura también, y para eso se han convocado nombres como los del baterista Mark Guiliana; los contrabajistas Henri Texier y Kyle Eastwood; los saxofonistas Steve Coleman, Chris Potter, 3 Guillaume Perret y Maciej Obara; el guitarrista Bill Frisell; la banda Mostly Other People Do The Killing, la percusionista Marilyn Mazur y los pianistas Uri Caine, Fred Hersch, Tigran Hamasyan, John Medeski, Roberto Fonseca, Martin Tingvall, Carla Bley y Aruán Ortiz, los dos últimos acompañando respectivamente al Riverside Quartet del trompetista Dave Douglas, y a Don Byron. Y, a propósito de los nombres de mujeres, intérpretes de jazz, que se mencionaron, interesante es saber igualmente que su presencia se salda con un veinticinco por ciento de participación en la programación, idéntico porcentaje al de los músicos que dan forma al ya referido apartado local. En ambos casos, ha sido tenido en cuenta como un factor fundamental la juventud de los participantes. En otro orden de cosas, gracias al compromiso con la educación musical que siempre ha caracterizado los contenidos de los programas de JAZZMADRID, acuden, nuevamente, músicos de conservatorios como los de las formaciones de la Amaniel Big Band y la Creativa Junior Big Band. A ambas se le suma este año la Big Band de Arturo Soria que participa por vez primera en el programa. Aquí encuentran los estudiantes un lugar en el que pueden demostrar que sus valores técnicos -y tienen todos suficientes- no son el único calibre de la medida de su talento. Observando la programación, se percibe, asimismo, un especial cuidado -y crecimiento- volviendo a incluir diversos artistas de blues. A la cabeza de la iniciativa, por su perseverante lucha por conquistar toda clase de públicos, cabe situar al veterano guitarrista Joe Louis Walker. Y, junto a él, el toque multicolor de Vieux Farka Touré desde Mali; el de Delgres desde la Isla Guadalupe, o el local de la cantante Big Mama Montse y del guitarrista Javier Vargas. Y se inaugura también una nueva sección en la muestra, que, con el nombre "No Solo Jazz", albergará conciertos en los que tal vez la música libre sea solo un ingrediente episódico; no obstante, por la incontestable calidad de la propuesta, no se hacía recomendable dejarla pasar de largo. En este apartado estarán las cantantes Daymé Arocena y Lila Downs. La música no agota, sin embargo, la oferta de esta edición de JAZZMADRID, que se pone al servicio del teatro y la literatura con una lectura dramatizada de textos de autores como Jack Kerouac, Julio Cortázar o Boris Vian, en las voces de Cristina Castaño, Manuela Velasco y Rafa Castejón, con dirección de Juan Carlos Corazza y ambientación musical al piano de Pepe Rivero. Habrá también una masterclass que impartirá el pianista Moisés P. Sánchez, una exposición fotográfica de Jean-Pierre Leloir, tres proyecciones de películas cuya temática está relacionada con el jazz y un ciclo de debates y conferencias a cargo de algunos de los representantes más importantes de la vida cultural y la crítica de jazz en España. 4 Finalmente, manteniendo uno de los rasgos que ya han hecho de esta convocatoria una cita singular, sus geografías naturales en Conde Duque y en el teatro Fernán Gómez experimentan una considerable ampliación, integrando los conciertos y actividades de jazz que, en el mes de noviembre, tienen previsto desarrollar el Círculo de Bellas Artes, el Festival de Jazz de Ciudad Lineal, el Instituto Francés, CentroCentro, cuyo concierto de Jonah Smith & David Soler organiza e impulsa M21 Radio y, finalmente, los ciclos "Jazz en los Distritos" y "Jazz con Sabor a Club", el primero con sede en diferentes distritos municipales de la ciudad, y el segundo en salas y clubes igualmente de Madrid adscritas a la asociación La Noche en Vivo. Con este alambique musical, JAZZMADRID sigue configurándose como uno de los mejores certámenes europeos que el jazz es capaz de producir. Y, con todo, lo más importante acaso siga siendo que se trata de un festival concebido, impulsado y gestionado por el Ayuntamiento de Madrid y, por ello, apegado a la ciudad que ocupa y que, seguro, no podría conocer desarrollo igual en cualquier otro lugar. Del 2 al 30 de noviembre de 2017 El jazz toma Madrid en noviembre con más de 100 actuaciones y 6 horas diarias de música Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ron Carter, Jorge Pardo, Jean Luc Ponty, Joe Louis Walker, Mulatu Astakte, Chris Potter, James Carter, Bill Frisell, Moisés P. Sánchez, Kyle Eastwood, Steve Coleman o Philip Catherine, artistas destacados entre el centenar de propuestas Conde Duque y el teatro Fernán Gómez. Centro Cultural de la Villa vuelven a ser los escenarios principales, recuperando el Festival de Jazz de Ciudad Lineal, colaborando una vez más con las salas de La Noche en Vivo y sumando los ciclos “Jazz en los Distritos” del programa CiudaDistrito y “Jazz Círculo”, del Círculo de Bellas Artes JAZZMADRID´17 prosigue con su decidida apuesta por los músicos españoles y las mujeres jazzistas, representando un 25% del programa respectivamente Calidad, diversidad y riesgo son los propósitos de un certamen que ofrecerá más de 6 horas diarias ininterrumpidas de música durante todo un mes. Madrid en noviembre suena a todo jazz. La gran cita musical del otoño madrileño celebrará su nueva edición del 2 al 30 de noviembre, ampliando su programación con más de un centenar de actuaciones que inundarán la ciudad de todas las estéticas del jazz, así como diferentes actividades paralelas en las que se desarrollarán debates, exposiciones, proyecciones cinematográficas, conferencias o literatura. Un año más el festival, organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Madrid, brinda la oportunidad de descubrir nuevos creadores junto a otros ya consagrados. Asimismo, mantiene una programación estilísticamente equilibrada y plural que vuelve a reunir a los artistas más relevantes del panorama jazzístico español, crece en artistas y localizaciones y continúa su apuesta por la calidad de sus directos, prestando especial atención a talentos emergentes, que compartirán cartel con reconocidos nombres de la escena nacional e internacional. Nuevamente en esta edición, uno de los aspectos más relevantes vuelve a ser el protagonismo y presencia de las mujeres creadoras e intérpretes en el conjunto artístico del cartel del festival, que se salda con una presencia de un veinticinco por ciento de participación en la programación. 6 Calidad, diversidad y apuesta por lo nuevo son los propósitos de JAZZMADRID´17 que ofrecerá más de 6 horas diarias ininterrumpidas de música. El Centro Cultural Conde Duque y el teatro Fernán Gómez. Centro Cultural de la Villa vuelven a ser los escenarios principales, con la novedad de que este año experimentan una considerable ampliación, sumándose en esta edición espacios como el Instituto Francés, CentroCentro con M21 Radio, el Círculo de Bellas Artes que ofrece el ciclo “Jazz Círculo” o el recuperado Festival de Jazz de Ciudad Lineal, que junto a las propuestas de diferentes clubes y salas de Madrid de la Asociación La Noche En Vivo y el ciclo de Jazz en los Distritos del programa CiudaDistrito, ofrecerán al público nuevas experiencias y nuevas formas de interactuar con la ciudad a través de la música.

    BIO TIGRAN HAMASYAN In its ever-evolving state, jazz invites into its fold imaginative artists who freely and courageously pursue their own vision, not only built on tradition but also infused with their own personality and passion. In the case of pianist/keyboardist Tigran Hamasyan, potent jazz improvisation fuses with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. Tigran is one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists of his generation. Tigran’s fresh sound is marked by an exploration of time signatures, charged dynamics, the shifting between acoustic and electric modes of expression, all undergirded by an affinity to the grind of heavy metal. Born in Gyumri, Armenia, in 1987, Tigran grew up in a household that was full of music—his father more of a rock fan while his uncle was a huge jazz buff. When he was just a toddler, Tigran gravitated to tape players and the piano instead of regular childhood toys, and by the time he was 3, he was working his way through figuring out songs on piano by the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Queen. His jazz tastes early on were informed by Miles Davis’s fusion period, and then around the age of 10 when his family moved to Yerevan, he came to discover the classic jazz songbook under the aegis of his teacher Vahag Hayrapetyan, who had studied with Barry Harris. Tigran chose to study music. While he studied classical music at an Armenian high school geared toward music studies, Tigran continued to grow on his own as a jazz pianist.

Dave Douglas is widely recognized as one of the most important and original American musicians to emerge from the jazz and improvised music scene of the last decade. His collaborations as a trumpeter read like a who's who of important contemporary artists: John Zorn, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Don Byron, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Myra Melford, Andy Bey, Trisha Brown, Henry Grimes, Tom Waits, Rabih Abou-Khalil, DJ Olive, Ikue Mori, Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg, Uri Caine, Roswell Rudd, Andrew Cyrille, Marc Ribot, Karsh Kale, Mark Dresser, Marty Ehrlich, and many others. Dave Douglas is “an original thinker blessed with a seemingly bottomless well of intriguing ideas,” writes Howard Reich. Uri Caine’s Mahler ABSTRACT: In recent years, artistic projects combining a wide array of musical styles, such as jazz interpretations of classical music or orchestral arrangements of rock songs, have enjoyed considerable popularity. As their authors were focused mainly on sales profits, the artistic value of their works was often highly disputable. Nevertheless, some outstanding achievements in that field have also been made, among them reinterpretations of classical repertoire - Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, and, above all, Mahler - by American pianist Uri Caine. He recorded several CDs containing new ver­ sions of Mahler’s entire works or their excerpts. Sometimes Caine’s music moves far away from the originals, though such artistic experiments are always well-grounded and aesthetically convincing. Caine’s reinterpretations of Mahler have also some (auto)biographical overtones. KEYWORDS: Uri Caine, blurred genres, reinterpretation, Jewish cultural tradition A warehouseman Gladyshev, one of the characters in Vladimir Voinovich’s novel, inspired by Michurin’s and Lysenko’s achievements, decided to grow a new plant which was to have been a combination of a potato and a to­ mato. Such a crop should bring a double benefit as in the near future it would be possible to pick tomatoes off the top and to dig up potatoes at the bottom of the same plant. Gladyshev named this cross using an acronym PUKS which stood for the ‘Put’ k Sotsialismu’ [Path to Socialism], ‘The experiments [...] have not as yet produced any useful results, however, some characteristic features of PUKS have already appeared: the leaves and stalks of Gladyshev’s plant were sort of potato­ like, the roots, one the other hand, looked definitely like those of a tomato’1.

    PAOLO FRESU & URI CAINE Paolo Fresu: tpt, flh & effects – Uri Caine: p, Fender Rhodes el. p Today The duo composed by Paolo Fresu and Uri Caine is the story of the successful meeting of two great personalities of modern jazz. It’s a sort of alternative version of the many projects that look at the most traditional standards of the jazz history for their repertoire, but here they are without a net as the choice of materials is actually dangerous due to its enormous popularity. Contrary to what might seem, it’s not easy at all to perform compositions that are the magma and the sign of jazz history. The duo approaches this game with surprising simplicity, managing to deliver the feeling that drives this extraordinary music. The meeting of these two musicians is one of the most interesting events of the jazz world: Fresu lyrical and dreamy trumpet, his melancholy trademark timbre perfectly matches Uri Caine’s piano full of quotations ranging from the American songbook to the blues to mainstream jazz to avant-garde and classical music, which Caine has revisited according to his personal view in many of his projects in the last ten years. Two real omnivorous artists in its true sense. So much so that each “concert” has spread in a series of 3 or 4 consecutive nights each covering a specific theme. A few years ago at Umbria Jazz Winter the duo performed for 4 distinctive nights each with a different theme of repertoire The first night was dedicated to classical baroque music, the second to jazz standards, the third to popular music (including rock and pop) and the last one to tracks that had been composed by the duo and that had been included in the two albums released by Emi/BlueNote in the previous years.

He had been playing for four years when he first listened to TClifford Brown, a trumpet king in the 1950s, and thought there was no hope for a boy from South Africa to blow a horn the way Brown could. Of course, more than half a century later, Masekela was the reason for more than a hundred people to crowd into the fourth floor of the Eubie Blake Center the evening of Oct. 21st, taking seats in overflow rows made up of metal chairs. He was joined on stage by good friend and legendary Charm City pianist, Larry Willis; the two of them, one trumpet, one piano, played a fifteen-tune set. As Masekela told showgoers early in the night, the music he and Willis were playing was what they had learned in the 1960s and 1970s. The duo first met at the Manhattan School of Music in the first half of the 1960s—where Willis had originally been a voice major singing opera and wearing powdered wigs that made him look like George Washington, so Masekela says.

    Il Midrash di Uri Caine incontra i fratelli ebrei George &Ira Gershwin Questa sera il pianista proporrà al Ravello festival la sua riflessione sull’opera gershwiniana e una interpretazione particolare della Rhapsody in blue Di OLGA CHIEFFI Pianista e compositore, Uri Caine, nel corso degli ultimi vent’anni è stato in grado di conciliare il talento adamantino con una flessibile visione creativa, riuscendo spesso a fornire a molta grande produzione classica una nuova e rivelatrice luminosità, ma anche dimostrando di essere in grado di cogliere una vena umoristica inesplorata dal filone jazzistico. Era accaduto con Wagner, Bach (Variazioni Goldberg), Mozart, Schumann, Beethoven e Mahler. Per ciascuna di queste esperienze, Caine ha lavorato di cesello con grande rispetto per centrare il suo principale obiettivo che è, nel contempo, semplice ed estremamente complesso: disvelare l’essenza di quella musica. Questa sera, alle ore 21,45, Uri Caine ritornerà sul palcoscenico del Ravello Festival per un omaggio a George Gershwin materiale incandescente su cui ha svolto un lavoro di grande ricerca e contaminazione. La conferma, lampante, verrà il dopo il caos controllato prodotto ad inizio concerto dai musicisti. Il trillo e poi un singulto che frammenta il celebre glissando del clarinetto di Chris Speed annuncia una “Rhapsody in blue” distante da tutte le precedenti: la stessa strepitosa formazione chiamata in causa è una chiara cesura rispetto alle big band o alle grandi orchestre del passato. Cinque soli elementi, con Barbara Walker vocals e Theo Bleckmann vocals; Ralph Alessi alla tromba; Joyce Hammann al violino; Chris Speed al sax tenore e clarinetto; Mark Helias al basso e Jim Black alla batteria ed electronics, coadiuvano Caine al piano svariando tra sonorità latine, una fortissima influenza klezmer e richiami di avanspettacolo.
