Non-profits are finding that by working together, they can have a much bigger impact on those who need it most. Working together, uniting for a common cause, we can achieve a result greater than the sum of its parts. WORKING TOGETHER Our Mission The Hall Family Foundation is a private philanthropic organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of human life. Programs that enrich the community, help people and promote excellence are considered to be of prime importance. The Foundation views its primary function as that of a catalyst. It seeks to be responsive to programs that are innovative, yet strive to create permanent solutions to community needs in the Greater Kansas City area. 01 HALL FAMILY FOUNDATION WORKING TOGETHER FOCUS AREAS Our Founders CHILDREN YOUTH & FAMILIES As outlined in the original bylaws, they COMMUNITY EDUCATION intended that the Foundation should DEVELOPMENT promote… the health, welfare and happiness of school-age children… the advancement COMMUNITY and diffusion of knowledge… activities NEEDS for the improvement of public health… and advancement of social welfare. These purposes were based on a family resolve to help people and enhance the quality of life. Almost 70 years later, their legacy lives on. THE OTHER Joyce C.     IN MEMORIAM Dr. Judith Freedman UDITH Freedman, who died in London on 20 December 2009, was for fifty years associated with the production of the Jewish Journal Jof Sociology, which her husband Professor Maurice Freedman had helped establish half a century earlier and which served and serves as the vehicle for the dissemination of high-quality research into problems of social formation, ethnic identity and demography amongst Jews both of the diaspora and of Israel. Dr Freedman was herself a scholar of international repute. Born into the large and well-connected Djamour family in Egypt on 22 September 1921, she was educated at the University of Cairo and at the London School of Economics, where she completed her doctoral research. This investigation, focussing on issues of kinship and matri- mony within the Malay community of Singapore, resulted in two influ- ential monographs, Malay Kinship & Marriage in Singapore and The Muslim Matrimonial Court in Singapore. Her professional interest in the social anthropology of south-east Asia had brought her into contact with a fellow researcher in this field, Maurice Freedman, late of the Royal Artillery. The couple were married in London in 1946. She collaborated with Sir Raymond Firth (her doctoral supervisor, Professor of anthropology at LSE and one of the founders of modern social anthropology) in his researches into issues of family and kinship in a south London borough. Maurice, mean- while, had returned to LSE as a lecturer, succeeding Firth as Professor of anthropology there in 1965. Five years later Maurice moved to Oxford, where, on the retirement of Sir Edward Evans-Pritchard, he had been elected to its prestigious chair of social anthropology, and to an All Souls fellowship.

This report examines the growing marginalisation of Christians and catalogues cases of discrimination. In January 2009 a poll showed that more than four out of five churchgoers (84 per cent) think that religious freedoms, of speech and action, are at risk in the UK. A similar proportion (82 per cent) feel it is becoming more difficult to live as a Christian in an increasingly secular country.1 This growing sense of intolerance felt by Christians is made all the worse when they face hostility in the name of ‘equality and diversity’.

It explores the impact that different approaches to creative industries policy have on creative practice in two media industries, BBC Scotland and Scottish Screen, and reflects on how each of these bodies articulates its role as a „national‟ institution. BBC Scotland is the Scottish branch of the UK‟s largest public service broadcaster, while Scottish Screen exists on a far smaller scale, to serve the screen industries in Scotland. The thesis examines the role of BBC Scotland in sustaining the creative economy and contributing to the cultural life of Scotland. The study of Scottish Screen examines a key early aim of the agency, that of establishing a national film studio. The work investigates the connections between UK and Scottish levels of creative industries policy in light of the debates over the future of public service broadcasting and the Scottish Executive‟s cultural policy framework. The study outlines how ideas of cultural creativity and its economic significance have developed, charts how these ideas have affected policy debate, and explores the extent to which devolution has affected film and television policy.
