Ozier9, and Alan Cressler10 Abstract We provide an annotated checklist of species recorded from caves and other subterranean habitats in the state of Georgia, USA. We report 281 species (228 invertebrates and 53 vertebrates), including 51 troglobionts (cave-obligate species), from more than 150 sites (caves, springs, and wells). Endemism is high; of the troglobionts, 17 (33 % of those known from the state) are endemic to Georgia and seven (14 %) are known from a single cave. We identified three biogeographic clusters of troglobionts. Two clusters are located in the northwestern part of the state, west of Lookout Mountain in Lookout Valley and east of Lookout Mountain in the Valley and Ridge. In addition, there is a group of tro- globionts found only in the southwestern corner of the state and associated with the Upper Floridan Aquifer. At least two dozen potentially undescribed species have been collected from caves; clarifying the taxonomic status of these organisms would improve our understanding of cave biodiversity in the state. -

Te Pūtaiao o Tokoriro: Taxonomy and diversity of New Zealand cave wētā (Orthoptera; Rhaphidophoridae) A thesis presented in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Zoology at Massey University, Manawatū New Zealand Josephine Fitness 2016 ii iii Abstract Species are the fundamental unit for ecology and evolution. Taxonomy, the naming of species, grabbles with the problem of accurately representing these fundamental units. In this research I targeted a group of understudied and undervalued insects that are common throughout New Zealand. This work focuses on Rhaphidophoridae, a family of Orthoptera found globally, but the diversity in New Zealand is poorly understood and poorly described. I have been the first to use high specimen numbers in order to establish within and between species differences of New Zealand cave wētā. I have established the importance of multiple taxonomic methods. At no stage was the aim to fully resolve all issues, but rather to identify morphological characters that are useful in distinguishing species, and integrating mtDNA sequence data to test species hypotheses. I focused first on cave wētā specimens that came from a biodiversity studied but had not been identified to genus or species. I was able to identify characters that could distinguish between the taxa present in this sample and developed a method that could be transferred to other locations. -

Aldrovandi, 18 – 00197 Roma - Italy Abstract New samples of Aemodogryllinae collected in cave habitats from Laos are reported with the description of the unknown male of Eutachycines cassani (Chopard, 1954).The distribution of Aemodogryllinae in Laos includes, at present, E. cassani in the Central Laos, two species of the genus Paradiestrammena, P. vitalisi (Chopard, 1919) in the Northern part of the country ; P. vernalis (Gorochov, 1998) in the Central Laos, and one representative of the genus Diestrammena (Brunner and Wattenwyl, 1888) from caves of Northern Laos close to the border with the Vietnam. Viale dell, Università, Roma, Italy Abstract A new species of Rhaphidophora (R. barociniturricchiae n.sp.) is described from a cave of Seram Island (Moluccas, Indonesia). The new species shows affinities with R. wasile and R. amboinensis from Halmaera and Amboina Islands respectively. The geographic distribution of the genus Rhaphidophora and the close genus Stonycophora is discussed in relation to the Wallace and Liddeker lines. Abstract—Fifty-three species in six families occur in Micronesia. Kevan (1987) listed forty-three species, 20 of which were given as new but unde- scribed. Kevan (1990) listed eight species as introduced, seven of which were on his previous list, plus Mecopoda elongata (Linnaeus). Seven new species were described in the Conocephalidae, Phisidini, by Jin & Kevan (1992). Eighteen additional new species and a subspecies are described in this paper, seventeen by Vickery & Kevan and one by English & Kevan, nine in the Gryllacrididae: Niphetogryllacris marianae, N. tolensis, Anancistrogera palauensis, Neanias ogasawarensis, Prosopogryllacris palauensis, P. chuukensis, Melaneremus marianae marianae, M. m. rotaensis, M. saiensis, and M. kosraensis; two in the Rhaphidophoridae: Rhaphidophora ponapensis and Stonychophora palauensis; three in the Phaneropteridae: Casigneta palauensis, Isopsera yapanese and I. palauensis; one in the Mecopodidae: Ocica ponapensis English & Kevan; and three in the Conocephalidae: Spinisternum palauensis, Macroxiphus globiceratus and Salomona ponapensis. Nine species are added to the lists of Kevan (1987, 1990), including one described as new. Twenty-six species are known to be endemic in Micronesia. Introduction This paper completes the work on the Orthoptera (sens. str.) and Grylloptera [=Ensifera] of Micronesia, except for the crickets (Grylloidea). The Fauna Europaea project comprises about 230,000 taxonomic names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies, which is much more than the originally projected number of 100,000 species. Fauna Europaea represents a huge effort by more than 400 contributing specialists throughout Europe and is a unique (standard) reference suitable for many users in science, government, industry, nature conservation and education. The “Orthopteroid orders“ is one of the 58 Fauna Europaea major taxonomic groups. It contains series of mostly well-known insect orders: Embiodea (webspinners), Dermaptera (earwigs), Phasmatodea (walking sticks), Orthoptera s.s.
