Adherence of Public Health. Digging deeper, the researchers found that ad- herence was a very important part of the equa- tion. The men who took at least half of their doses had 50.2 percent fewer infections; those who took at least 90 percent of their medication had 72.8 percent fewer infections. Even the best drugs will not work if people don’t take them as they should. Robert Grant, M.D., is a researcher at the Glad- stone Institute at the University of California San Francisco and the principle investigator of the study. He said they asked participants to re- port how often they took their pills, but because people often are “optimistic” in their recall, and sometimes report what they think researchers want to hear, the study also tested for levels of the drug in the blood of those who became infected. “No drug was detected in 91 percent; the other 9 percent had detectible levels inside blood cells that were very low. The absence of drug in the blood is probably due to people not taking the drug, which could explain all of the infections that did occur” in that group, Grant said. The association between adherence and the level of protection was similar to what was seen in the microbicides trial. People who most close- ly used the product as intended had the best results. Cutting corners gave HIV an opportunity that it quickly exploited.

INDICATIONS ISENTRESS is an anti-HIV medicine used for the treatment of HIV. ISENTRESS must be used with other anti-HIV medicines, which may increase the likelihood of response to treatment. The safety and effectiveness of ISENTRESS in children has not been studied. It is important that you remain under your doctor’s care. ISENTRESS will NOT cure HIV infection or reduce your chance of passing HIV to others through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. IMPORTANT RISK INFORMATION A condition called Immune Reconstitution Syndrome can happen in some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS) when anti-HIV treatment is started. Signs and symptoms of in ammation from opportunistic infections may occur as the medicines work to treat the HIV infection and strengthen the immune system. Call your doctor right away if you notice any signs or symptoms of an infection after starting ISENTRESS. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness while taking ISENTRESS. This is because on rare occasions muscle problems can be serious and can lead to kidney damage. When ISENTRESS has been given with other anti-HIV drugs, side effects included nausea, headache, tiredness, weakness, trouble sleeping, stomach pain, dizziness, depression, and suicidal thoughts and actions. Rash occurred more often in patients taking ISENTRESS and darunavir together than with either drug separately, but was generally mild.

I think this chess set—complete with pieces made of medical-grade silicone and with 24-karat gold E detail—would qualify. The ping-pong table that doubles as a chalkboard would also be in that category.

F Zhip to be square Gadgets, we love ‘em! The Zhip (http://www.thezhip.com; $24.95) is an item that turns your mobile handheld into an instant “on-the-go” enter- tainment center. The Zhip expands to fit any mobile device and features special retractable, “scratch-free” grip handles with protective padding that attach tightly around a mobile handheld to safeguard and secure even the most expensive device. The unit is compact (and can easily fit F into a small pocket). Plus, the Zhip is made from 100-percent polycarbon- ate “bullet-proof” material—although I’m not sure what you’ll be doing that you’ll need something that tough. B Cher and share alike You’ve seen the movie—so why not get the soundtrack for you and/or friends? The Bur- lesque soundtrack features music by the film’s stars, Cher and Christina Aguilera. This marks Cher’s first new original song in seven years as well as her first movie musical. The soundtrack also includes remakes/covers of classic songs such as Etta James’ “Something’s Got A Hold On B Your single source for Me” and “Tough Lover” and Mae West’s “A Guy thoughtful products & services What Takes His Time,” all performed by Christina Aguilera. Among other tunes, Cher belts “You for you and your dog. Haven’t Seen the Last of Me”—which is a pretty safe bet. This is something you can give to someone who’s been naughty (in a good way) or nice.

B Wrap it up I had never seen condoms described as “fash- ion-forward” (as if Dolce & Gabbana would come out with a version), but after seeing “ooo” bou- tique’s (http://www.oooboutique.com) wares, I do understand the description. It’s the innova- tive package that stimulates conversation—the condoms’ package, that is. With lust, passion pack and tryst lines, it’s hard to go wrong. C

D Great scotch! When it comes to scotch, it doesn’t get much better than Glenrothes Single Malt. Among the varieties available is the Glenrothes Vintage 1998 ($54.99), D which a release describes as possessing “tropical fruits with sweet vanilla and hints of cinnamon.” Also, the palate “exudes citrus notes with a rich bouquet of golden syrup and lemongrass.” Whatever is in there, it tastes divine.

B (Wall-)POP life wallPOPS (http://www.wall-pops.com) are vinyl designs of many dif- ferent designs that stick on to walls—and are removeable, so you can change designs based on what strikes your fancy. There are literally hun- dreds of patterns (some appealing, some quite busy), and you can even create designs. If you’re a Wendy Williams type, you might opt for an animal print; if you’re more into Oprah, then ice might be your thing—not that there’s anything wrong with that.

C C Light makes right Skokie-based company Tech Lighting (http://www.techlighting.com) and sister company LBL Lighting have launched railtones: whole home, wireless surround sound that is plug-and-play for nearly everyone with a popular track lighting system. Sure, it’s a splurge ($599, with the adapter running $125 and additional speakers and a wireless subwoofer available separately for a list price of $250), but think of how appreciative that special someone will be.

D D Nature boy The Morton Arboretum (http://www.mortonarb.org) has a variety of nature-themed items in its store, including ornaments made from felled trees, place mats made from cross-sections of trees and more. These gifts are perfect for those who consider themselves green.

However, if you’re not sure what your recipient will like, you can either go the gift-certificate route (which seems safest to me) or even purchase a design-a-bag kit.

C B Remembering Keith The artist/activist Keith Haring may be gone, but his legacy lives on, thanks in part to online stores such as the Keith Haring Store (http:// www.pop-shop.com). Among the items available are buttons, sweatshirts, calendars, caps and even beverage containers.

Tee, myself and I tees by Tina (http://www.teesbytina.com; $25-$48) claims to do what many may feel is impossible after the holidays: flatter your fig- ure. You may have recently seen Sondheim: The Birthday Concert on PBS. This historic evening celebrat- ing the 80th birthday of Stephen Sondheim has been released on CD and DVD and features some of the luminaries mentioned in this very column. It’s no surprise that one highlight was Patti LuPone singing “The Ladies Who Lunch” in front of Elaine Stritch—and pointedly asking, “Does anyone still wear ... a HAT?” But even better was Stritch singing “I’m Still Here” while Patti sat behind her mouthing every word. Priceless. Our “Ask Billy” question comes from Devin in Orlando: “I know this is in bad taste, but I have such a crush on Joran Van Der Sloot.
