It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality. -

Marriage in Africa is a union between a man and a woman (monogamy) or mainly between a man and women (polygyny), or between a woman and men (polyandry), though this is very rare. In some cases it may be serial polygyny or polyandry, i.e. the case of marrying more than one wife or husband, but always after divorce. Marriage just like other institutions in Africa has rites of passage in which those who intend to enter into it must pass through. Every culture has a sense of peculiarity as to the way in which it approaches this matter. The Efik people are not an exception to this. The question that may be asked is, how gender-balanced are these rites? The Efik people claim to have gender equality, but is this reflected in her marriage rites? Rites are symbolisms of what the actual institution which those rites represent. It is in the light of this that this paper using gender theory critically looked at the Efik traditional marriage rites from gender perspective. The paper realized that, among the Efik people’s traditional marriage rites, there is gender imbalance. It proffers ways of having gender balance in Efik traditional marriage rites. Apart from adding a voice to the cry for gender equality and equity, it provides scholarship a resource material needed for Efik ethnographic study. -

Bakassi The Oron perspective Page 1 of 4 Bakassi: The Oron perspective By Edet Uno Leader of the Oron People's Rights Movement AS an Oron man, this analysis of my people 's viewpoints on the Bakassi issue will almost totally ignore the technicalities of the International Court's study and the verdict derived therefrom. My articulation will depart, essentially, from commonsense to the extent of its validity as the basis of all scientific discourse I will route the argument precisely and specifically to answer some pertinent questions most of them fallacious - that have been raised by some key interests on the problem. Right from the beginning some Oron indigenes knew Nigeira had a bad case. And I told this to many of my friends from other parts of the country. If you are a member of the Oron elite or a fisherman or a labourer in one of the hundreds of Cameroonian plantations, where hundreds of thousands of Nigerians make a living from their Cameroonian landlords, the International Court of Justice judgement on the so-called Bakassi Peninsula would show how far the State can go in the pursuit of its interest. It shows the complex nakedness of Nigeria's internal dynamics and the forces governing relationships among its myriad nationalities. It shows the crass inefficiency of those who control the apparatus of power. And above all, it demonstrates the ignorance and falsehood which have been the crucial factor in Nigeria's inability to integrate as an autonomous state that, as a rule, must take all sections of the community and individuals with an objective sense of equity and justice. -

African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal Vol. 5, No. 1, January 2012, 85Á103 Bongo´ Ita´: leopard society music and language in West Africa, Western Cuba, and New York City Ivor L. Miller* Research Fellow, African Studies Center, Boston University, USA The Abakua´ mutual-aid society of Cuba, recreated from the E´ kpe` leopard society of West Africa’s Cross River basin, is a richly detailed example of African cultural transmission to the Americas. Its material culture, such as masquerades and drum construction, as well as rhythmic structures, are largely based on E´ kpe` models. Its ritual language is expressed through hundreds of chants that identify source regions and historical events; many can be interpreted by speakers of E` f`k,ı the pre-colonial lingua franca of the Cross River region (Miller 2005). With the help of both E´ kpe` and Abakua´ leaders, I have examined relationships between the musical practices of West African E´ kpe`, Cuban Abakua´, as well as Cuban migrants to the United States whose commercial recordings have evoked West African places and events historically relevant to Abakua´, meanwhile contribut- ing to the evolution of North American jazz. Amoah INTRODUCTION One of the major values of contemporary African nationalism is equal rights of the individuals and minorities in a country. The feeling of helplessness in the established socio-political set up often motivates such minorities to try and achieve their goals through their own efforts. In the 1950s the advent of internal self-government in Nigeria brought with it the struggle of minority ethnic groups seeking a measure of autonomy. The idea was resisted by the dominant ethnic groups for as long as possible on the pretext of preserving the unity ofNigeria. This was to a large extent the remote cause of the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970. Some analysts have ironically labelled it as the 'Nigerian War of Unity' in the sense that it represented the tacit acceptance that true unity could come to Nigeria only when most of its constituent ethnic units genuinely felt that they had a voice in its administration and a stake in its continued existence. Furthermore development planning in the form of sectoral planning on a national basis is not understood by the majority of Nigerians. -

Gifts in general, have meanings attached when given or received but most importantly, they communicate the culture of the people and other forms of emotions. Through this work, the different items given and the significance of the gifts in Ibibio traditional marriage/ culture are shown. The theoretical framework is the semiotic approach which has to do with the science of sign system or signification which is amenable to this paper. -

Anaang is a developing language spoken by the Anaang people in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. Genetically, Anaang is a Lower Cross Language of the Benue-Congo sub-family of the Niger-Congo Language Phylum. The objectives of the study are to investigate the articulatory features of Anaang and how palatalisation is formed in the language. The population is made of sixteen informants, two from each of the eight local government areas in Anaang speaking areas. Collection of data is based on interviews, participant observation and personal interaction with the informants. In achieving this, fifty items were used from SIL Comparative African Wordlists. Interviews were both formally and informally recorded in a digital midget. Formally, the recordings were done on the knowledge of the informants who were asked to pronounce words in Anaang. Informally, data were recorded unknowingly to the informants in social gatherings. Articulatory Model by Browman & Goldstein (1990) is adopted as the theoretical frame for the analysis. The theory recognizes gestures as abstract, discreet and dynamically defined units which are invariant, but overlap in time due to their internal spatio-temporal organisation. -

The insights that he provided inspired generations of scholars to study in greater depth the evidence of deep-seated belief systems and elements of culture that were brought from Africa to the New World through the infamous slave trade. -

ABSTRACT This paper takes a critical look at the cultural values of Nsibidi and its related writings. It perceives Nsibidi as an Ekpe tool for socio-cultural communication amongst the practitioners of the Elge society. The culture of Nsibidi is practiced in Nigeria, Africa and beyond. The paper has some recommendation and conclusion. Keywords: Cultural values, Nsibidi, Nigeria INTRODUCTION Culture is a belief system of the total way of life of a person, group of people or society. However, culture is viewed differently by scholars yet, its basic tenets are the same. Anthropologists see culture as all the features of man’s social life which he did not acquire biologically. Writers like [1], [2], [3] have viewed culture as a complete whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of the society. Because acquired but not in born. Most at times what human beings do affect them either negatively or positively. Nsibidi according to [4] as a form of communication, has been a focus of inquiry for observers and students of Cross River cultures from early colonial period (mirror contributions include, [3], [2], [4] [5], [6], [7],[8], [9], [10], [11], [12 and [13] etc. Nsibidi is generally thought to have originated among the Ejagham people of the northern, Cross River region, in large part because colonial investigators found the greatest number and variety of signs among them [7]. -

It described the religion, social, economic and political structures of the society as progressive and dynamic. But, Ekpe in the course of the colonial period underwent a wide range of fundamental changes in their structure, roles, status and activities. The attitude of colonial agencies, the tenets of colonial enterprise – Christianity, Western education and commerce and the pursuit of these tenets as well as some activities of the societies themselves, conduced inevitably to a series of measures adopted by colonial authorities to suppress the societies in question. The acts of suppression altered the pattern of relationship of these societies to their communities and people by altering (diminishing) their roles, status and activities. The aim of this paper is to examine the role and activities of this society, its confrontation with colonial authorities as well as its contemporary standing. Essentially, this is an examination of the themes of change and continuity. -

THEY HAD NO KING: ELLA BAKER AND THE POLITICS OF DECENTRALIZED ORGANIZATION AMONG AFRICAN-DESCENDED POPULATIONS by JOHN HORHN Under the Direction of Akinyele Umoja, PhD ABSTRACT The evolution of African stateless societies and the diverse impact of their cultures, on political thought previous to and post-modernity, are not well understood. Scholars acknowledge the varied influence of precolonial African culture on the artistic, spiritual, and linguistic expressions of African-descended populations. However, observations regarding the impact of such acephalous societies on the political thought of the African Diaspora remain obscure. The organizational techniques of such societies are best described as a form of kinship-based anarchism. This study seeks to examine the persistence of such organizational techniques among African-descended populations in the United States. The political life and background of Ella Baker will be used as a historical case study to illustrate the possible strands of continuity that may exist between the organizational habitude of African acephalous societies, and modern African-American grassroots political structures.
