Project 1: Columbus Park Pavilion

The site of the first project is the plaza in front of Brooklyn Borough Hall known as Columbus Park. The plaza is at the center of Brooklyn’s Downtown, surrounded by a complex of courthouses and a busy commercial district. The paved plaza connects to Park at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The plaza is used by thousands of people every day - many pass through on their way somewhere else, others use it as a meeting place. For three days each week in good weather the Greenmarket vendors set up tables to sell produce and baked goods. An open subway entrance is directly opposite the statue of Christopher Columbus and a small kiosk provides access to the subway via elevator. It’s a busy place!

Your pavilion will provide a visual and functional focus to the space, providing a roofed area for the subway entrance and elevator, and multi-purpose area to serve the Greenmarket and Information Booth. The pavilion will also include a small café with outdoor seating. The café kitchen will be available for cooking demonstrations connected with the Greenmarket educational outreach program.

Optional: If you choose, you may also create a subterranean mezzanine, at the level of the subway turnstiles (about eighteen feet below the plaza). This mezzanine would house Greenmarket stalls, allowing them to function in inclement weather. To give this area light and ventilation, portions of the plaza above this mezzanine may be opened up, or large skylights could be incorporated into the design. This would open the possibilities for walkways above, giving subway riders their first impression of a dynamic, vibrant Brooklyn

Your project may also include recommendations for benches and other site furniture and plantings. The existing fountain will remain in place. The statue of Christopher Columbus may be relocated (but not removed) for your project.

Required Pavilion Program: 1. Expanded subway entrance with escalators and stairs 2. Elevator to subway in existing location. 3. Greenmarket office (250 sf) 4. Information Booth (100 sf) 5. Toilets (2 accessible) and storage (225 sf) 6. Café kitchen and storage for tables and chairs (500 sf)

Assignments:

1. Prepare a research paper, presented in a power point, on your assigned topic. For each topic your presentation must include your own observations as well as researched information. Your analysis will discuss the use of space, materials, and critique what you find or see. Photographs, plans, and other descriptive information must be included. (Presentations Friday, January 31st)
