1M'sia not a BN political tool, says Najib Malaysiakini.com Disember 25, 2010 Najib Razak said today that the 1Malaysia concept is for nation-building, and not meant for political purposes. Without doubt, the prime minister said, this spirit of togetherness and the ability to rise above political differences are important in ensuring continued peace and stability in the country. "Although some might like to think it (1Malaysia) is for political purposes, it is actually for nation-building," he said. "It is for us to come together, for us to feel that we belong to one nation, one people with one vision, and that is for us to march forward together to develop a truly prosperous, harmonious and successful 21st century nation," he said at the Christmas tea party hosted by Kuala Lumpur Archbishop Murphy Pakiam at the archbishop's residence here. Najib added: "In today's world where a small group of extremists has drowned the voices of reason and common sense and hijacked the agenda of peace and moderation, it is important for the moderates in every faith - Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists - among us to speak up to reclaim our rightful place and the moral high ground." Najib also said that religion taught us to be tolerant, caring and respectful of the beliefs and practices of others. "We are bound by our common destiny. We are bound by our common heritage. We are bound by our need to forge ahead as one nation to face the challenges that lie ahead," he said. Najib also reminded Malaysians not to forget the message of Christmas which is peace, hope, charity, love and goodwill towards all men.

Fordham International Law Journal Volume 26, Issue 5 2002 Article 1 Unjust Order: Malaysia’s Internal Security Act Nicole Fritz∗ Martin Flahertyy ∗ y Copyright c 2002 by the authors. Fordham International Law Journal is produced by The Berke- ley Electronic Press (bepress). http://ir.lawnet.fordham.edu/ilj Unjust Order: Malaysia’s Internal Security Act Nicole Fritz and Martin Flaherty Abstract This Report represents the culmination of a year-long project undertaken by the Crowley Pro- gram to update the study of the use and impact of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in Malaysia in light of international law obligations. We reference first those international commitments that Malaysia has expressly adopted. However, these are very few–reflecting the antipathy felt by the Malaysian government for international obligations of this sort. Additionally, we have made ref- erence to the generally-accepted international law provisions applicable in this context–intended both to demonstrate the extent to which the ISA deviates from widely-upheld international norms, even if those norms are not ones expressly accepted by Malaysia. We have also referenced the extent to which other States, contemplating reviving or enacting similar laws, will fall afoul of their more readily undertaken international obligations in doing so. SPECIAL REPORT UNJUST ORDER: MALAYSIA'S INTERNAL SECURITY ACT Nicole Fritz* & Martin Flaherty** INTRODUCTION The Petronas Towers - two soaring office blocks in the heart of Kuala Lumpur - rise cleanly from their base. Few neighboring skyscrapers hem their space and it is this contrast to their surrounding landscape that makes them, arguably, even more arresting than the Twin Towers they so obviously recall.

  • Mahathir, the Builder of Modern Malaysia, Says Rais
23 SEP 2003 Rais-Mahathir MAHATHIR, THE BUILDER OF MODERN MALAYSIA, SAYS RAIS KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the builder of modern Malaysia, who "has done the marathon act of governing the country as punctuated by a plethora of development", Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said today. He said that Dr Mahathir is also more than qualified to be aptly referred to as a statesman from Asia. Not only has he lectured all over the world, he also has supporters in the Third World, while the South-South endeavour has earned him both respect and appreciation, he said when launching "The Encyclopedia on Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad" for the international level at the Islamic Centre of Oxford University in England. The text of his speech was also released here. The local launch of the 10-volume encyclopedia was performed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Sunday. Rais said that having led Malaysia successfully for more than two decades, the country has benefited immensely under Dr Mahathir's leadership. Rais said that the Prime Minister has been coaxing Malaysians to new heights and new challenges, and truly believes in the adage "what others can do we can do better". In his zeal to create excellence, he said, Dr Mahathir epitomizes many things through leadership by example. "Dr Mahathir is not one that is likely to be summed up as a stereotype. Dr Mahathir is many things to many people. "Reticent yet expansive.

The prime minister called for greater regulation of the internet saying, “Indecency and anarchy can seep into any environment that is not anchored on any cultural roots and our values.” Najib’s remarks are not surprising. Despite earlier declarations that the media would “responsibly report what they see”, whether or not it is helpful to the government, Najib’s administration’s actions in 2010 clearly show that rhetoric aside, government control of freedom of expression is here to stay. Najib’s deputy Muhyiddin Yasin, when opening an international media forum, captures this doublespeak, “While it is in our best interest to further liberalise the media to increase our global awareness, we must not forget that freedom of the press is not a blank cheque to do whatever we want.” Both leaders seem to suggest that access to information and freedom of expression are “dangerous” if left unchecked. I would respectfully disagree. It is not freedom of information or expression that is dangerous.
