1.0 Introduction

Gatehouse is home to 6,187 people and provides 4,600 jobs in 393 businesses. Of these businesses, 95 (24.2 per cent) are Buckinghamshire Business First members.

There were 2,901 employed people aged 16-74 living in Gatehouse ward at the 2011 Census, 111 more than the 2,790 recorded in 2001. Over that period the working age population rose 301 to 3,984 while the total population rose 343 to 6,187. The number of households rose by 83 (3.5 per cent) to 2,440. ease and only places the ward 19th out of all wards in Vale. However, the large number of residents in the ward means the percentage increase accounted for a fairly significant increase in actual households.

The largest companies in Gatehouse include:

District Council;  McAfee International Ltd;  Network Associates;  Kennel Club;  The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital;  Agria Pet Insurance Ltd; and  Hillside Nursing Home.

There are 125 Gatehouse, representing 3.3 per cent of working age residents, including 40 claimants aged 18-24 and 25 who have been claiming for more than six months.

Superfast broadband is expected to be available to 92 per cent of premises in the Gatehouse ward by March 2016 with commercial providers responsible for 98 per cent. The Connected Counties project, run by BBF, deliver the remaining 6 per cent through its interventions in Gatehouse, Aylesbury, Cholesbury, , Tring and exchange areas. BBF is seeking to deliver an extended superfast footprint via additional funding, adaptation of downstream technology and contract claw-back mechanism.

At the time of the 2001 Censusi, of the 2,945 employed residents, 655 people lived and worked in the ward, with the most common destinations by local authority district being:

2.0 Industrial structure

There are 393 businesses located in Gatehouse employing 4,600 people. Of these businesses, 274 are micro businesses, employing fewer than 10 people.

Gatehouse is over-represented in a number of industries, notably motor trades and public administration and defence. Motor trades account for 8.4 per cent of employment in the ward which ranks it 285th out of all wards for employment in the sector. Public administration & defence accounts for 13.2 per cent of employment. This ranks the ward at 556th out of all wards for employment in the sector. The ward is also somewhat less notably over-represented in the mining, manufacturing, wholesale, information and business administration sectors.

Sectors which are under-represented in the ward include construction, retail, accommodation, financial, property and professional, scientific & technical. Accommodation and food services makes up only 1.5 per cent of employment in the ward which ranks it 7936th out of all wards.

2.1 The Industrial Strategy and the Plan for Growth

economic growth. The Plan for Growth and the Industrial Strategy set out policies to realise this objective and to rebalance the economy, which include focusing on sectors expected to deliver strong -represented in these sectors, particularly aerospace, the information economy and professional and business services.

While Gatehouse provides jobs in these sectors, the industrial strategy sector where the ward delivers the highest share of national employment is education, which accounts for 9.2 per cent of employment, ranking Gatehouse at 4,382nd among English wards. The proportions of jobs in Gatehouse in Industrial Strategy sectors are presented in Table 1.

At 5.2 per cent, the proportion of Gatehouse professional and business services is the 5,254th highest of all wards in England, the proportion is below that of both the country level and the district level.

3.0 Labour market

At 67.2 per cent of 16-74 year olds, Gatehouse the country. Gatehouse has a proportion of 18.7 per cent of its residents qualified to degree level or higher. Furthermore, 30.2 per cent work in managerial, professional or technical occupations.

In Aylesbury Vale the wards most similar to Gatehouse are , and & Hawkslade however, these are the only wards to rank within the top 1000 closest matches. The least similar ward in the district is , one of three wards in Aylesbury to rank lower than the 8,000th closest match along with and .

Gatehouse has a low level of those who work from home and are self-employed. Furthermore, as stated previously, the ward has a low level of those educated to degree level or higher and those working in managerial, professional and technical roles. Gatehouse looks to have an average employment rate and level of working age residents.

4.0 Occupational Structure

Gatehouse lower skilled and lower paid occupations, with only 30.2 per cent of working residents employed in managerial, professional and technical occupations, ranking in the bottom quartile nationally for both managerial and professional occupations. In contrast Gatehouse ranks in the top quartile for elementary occupations, with 14.2 per cent employed in these occupations. The ward also ranks in the top quartile for sales and caring occupations

Buckinghamshire has the lowest level of economic deprivation of any Local Enterprise Partnership, with Aylesbury Vale having the 37th lowest economic deprivation of all 326 local authority districts in England, behind South Bucks (10th) and Chiltern (13th) but ahead of Wycombe (69th). Chart 4 wards among the least deprived in England with 17 of the 36 wards featuring among the least deprived 10 per cent of all wards in England and only six ranking among the most deprived half of English wards, a stark contrast to the London Borough of Newham where no ward ranks above halfway, highlighting the challenge Aylesbury Vale faces to attract resource tackle deprivation.

Gatehouse has the 2383rd highest economic deprivation of the 7,664 wards in England and the 2nd most economically deprived of the 36 Aylesbury Vale wards. Gatehouse is the 6h most economically deprived among the 108 ward in Buckinghamshire. The position of ds in England is shown in below, with Gatehouse one of the 2 wards fourth most deprived decile.

Gatehouse ranks 2271st out of all wards in England based on the Index of Multiple Deprivationii; this makes it among the more deprived in England, well above Aylesbury Vale 6006th,demonstrating that the ward is more deprived than the district as a whole.

The wards in Aylesbury Vale most closely matching Gatehouse deprivation profile are presented in Table 3. Nationally, the closest matches are Delapre & Briar Hill (Northampton) and Shepway North (Maidstone) while Southcourt and Quarrendon are the most similar in Aylesbury Vale ranking as the 33rd and 273rd most similar of all English wards. Of the 36 Aylesbury Vale wards, only three are among the 1,000 best matches. However, Gatehouse has 13 wards outside the 7000 closest matches including at 7474th and Stewkley at 7521st.

6.0 Demography

At 36.2 years, Gatehouse below the 40.0 recorded across Aylesbury Vale as well as the county average of 41.0. This makes Gatehouse one of the youngest wards in England as suggested in Chart 6. In terms of age structure, two of the wards in Aylesbury Vale most similar to Gatehouse are Elmhurst and Watermead and Aylesbury Central with average ages of 35.7 and 36.5 respectively.

Gatehouse has a lower proportion of working age residents than Aylesbury Vale at only 64.4 per cent. This ranks Gatehouse at 2,777th of all wards in England based on proportion of residents at working age. Gatehouse has a high proportion of those aged 0 - 15 at 22.8 per cent. This ranks Gatehouse at 650th of all wards in England putting it among the uppermost rankings of all wards in England for this age bracket.

7.0 Educational attainment

Aylesbury Vale is one of the best qualified places in the country, with only 17.8 per cent of residents aged 16 and over holding no qualifications, well below the 22.5 per cent recorded across the country as a whole, while 32.0 per cent hold degree level qualifications, well above the national level of 27.4 per cent.

Gatehouse lower educat only 25.6 per cent having no qualifications and 18.7 per cent educated to degree level or higher. Only 2.8 per cent of Gatehouse residents are schoolchildren or full-time students aged 16 to 17. This is si performance compared to all wards in England is presented in Chart 7 below.

Gatehouse is most similar to Dunstable-Manshead (Central Bedfordshire) and Cheshunt Central (Broxbourne) of all English wards with regard to educational attainment. In the district the most similar wards are Elmhurst & Watermead, Quarrendon and Southcourt. However, these are the only wards out of the other 35 ranking inside the top 1000 matches with sixe wards ranking outside the 7000th closest match including Long Crendon at 7731st and Quainton at 7779th.

Buckinghamshire has the strongest schools performance any LEPiii, with over a quarter of

and 88.0 per cent of young people in the county achieving at least NVQ level 2 by 19. Gatehouse performance as demonstrated by their most recent OFSTED reports, which are summarised below.

7.1.1 Aylesbury Vale (Key Stage 4) In 2012, 25 per cent of pupils attained five GCSEs grade A*-C including English and maths. This is a decrease in 15 percentage points since 2011, the result placed the school in the lowest quintile of all schools. In this year, 25 per cent of pupils attained A*-C in English (a decrease of 24 percentage points) and 55 per cent attained A*-C in mathematics, a decrease of one percentage point since 2011. The results placed the school in the lowest quintile and 4th quintile respectively. In 2012, 65 per cent of pupils attained grade A*-C in science, an increase of 20 percentage points on 2011. The result placed the school in the bottom 40 per cent of all schools.

In terms of progress, 34 per cent of all pupils achieved expected progress in English in 2012, this is an increase of 19 percentage points on 2011 and placed the school in the lowest quintile of all schools. In the same year, 59 per cent of pupils achieved expected progress in mathematics, this is a decrease of four percentage points since 2011. The result placed the school in the bottom 40 per cent of all schools. The overall attendance rate for the school was 92.9 per cent, this is an increase of 0.4 per cent since 2011. This placed the school in the bottom 20 per cent of all schools.

7.1.2 Haydon Abbey School (Key Stage 2) In 2012, 81 per cent of pupils attained Level 4 or higher in Key Stage 2 English, the result placed the school in the bottom 40 per cent of all schools. In reading, 81 per cent of pupils attained Level 4 or above and in writing 72 per cent of pupils attained Level 4 or above. This placed the school in the fourth quintile and the lowest quintile respectively. In mathematics, 78 per cent of pupils attained Level 4 or above in Key Stage 2, this is an increase in 22 percentage points on the previous year and placed the school in the bottom 40 per cent of all schools.

In 2012, 89 per cent of pupils attained expected progress in English placing the school in the bottom 40 per cent of al schools. In the same year 79 per cent of pupils achieved expected progress in maths, this is an increase of 22 percentage points. The school was placed in the bottom 20 per cent of all schools based on this result. The attendance rate for the school in this year was 95 per cent. This was an increase of two percentage points on the previous year. The school was placed in the bottom 40 per cent of all schools based on this result.
