Aylesbury Vale Councillor Update Economic Profile of Gatehouse Ward April 2013 Produced by Buckinghamshire Business First’s research department P a g e | 2 1.0 Introduction Gatehouse is home to 6,187 people and provides 4,600 jobs in 393 businesses. Of these businesses, 95 (24.2 per cent) are Buckinghamshire Business First members. There were 2,901 employed people aged 16-74 living in Gatehouse ward at the 2011 Census, 111 more than the 2,790 recorded in 2001. Over that period the working age population rose 301 to 3,984 while the total population rose 343 to 6,187. The number of households rose by 83 (3.5 per cent) to 2,440. ease and only places the ward 19th out of all wards in Aylesbury Vale. However, the large number of residents in the ward means the percentage increase accounted for a fairly significant increase in actual households. The largest companies in Gatehouse include: Aylesbury Vale District Council; McAfee International Ltd; Network Associates; Kennel Club; The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital; Agria Pet Insurance Ltd; and Hillside Nursing Home. There are 125 Gatehouse, representing 3.3 per cent of working age residents, including 40 claimants aged 18-24 and 25 who have been claiming for more than six months. Superfast broadband is expected to be available to 92 per cent of premises in the Gatehouse ward by March 2016 with commercial providers responsible for 98 per cent. The Connected Counties project, run by BBF, deliver the remaining 6 per cent through its interventions in Gatehouse, Aylesbury, Cholesbury, Stoke Mandeville, Tring and Wendover exchange areas. BBF is seeking to deliver an extended superfast footprint via additional funding, adaptation of downstream technology and contract claw-back mechanism. At the time of the 2001 Censusi, of the 2,945 employed residents, 655 people lived and worked in the ward, with the most common destinations by local authority district being: Aylesbury Vale (2,119, 72.0 per cent) Wycombe (190, 6.5) South Oxfordshire (94, 3.2) Dacorum (77, 2.6) Chiltern (60, 2.0) Milton Keynes (42, 1.4) Westminster (35, 1.2) Cherwell (28, 1.0) P a g e | 3 2.0 Industrial structure There are 393 businesses located in Gatehouse employing 4,600 people. Of these businesses, 274 are micro businesses, employing fewer than 10 people. Gatehouse is over-represented in a number of industries, notably motor trades and public administration and defence. Motor trades account for 8.4 per cent of employment in the ward which ranks it 285th out of all wards for employment in the sector. Public administration & defence accounts for 13.2 per cent of employment. This ranks the ward at 556th out of all wards for employment in the sector. The ward is also somewhat less notably over-represented in the mining, manufacturing, wholesale, information and business administration sectors. Accommodation and food services makes up only 1.5 per cent of employment in the ward which ranks it 7936th out of all wards. P a g e | 4 2.1 The Industrial Strategy and the Plan for Growth economic growth. The Plan for Growth and the Industrial Strategy set out policies to realise this objective and to rebalance the economy, which include focusing on sectors expected to deliver strong -represented in these sectors, particularly aerospace, the information economy and professional and business services. While Gatehouse provides jobs in these sectors, the industrial strategy sector where the ward delivers the highest share of national employment is education, which accounts for 9.2 per cent of employment, ranking Gatehouse at 4,382nd among English wards. The proportions of jobs in Gatehouse in Industrial Strategy sectors are presented in Table 1. Gatehouse has a proportion of 18.7 per cent of its residents qualified to degree level or higher. Furthermore, 30.2 per cent work in managerial, professional or technical occupations. In Aylesbury Vale the wards most similar to Gatehouse are Quarrendon, Southcourt and Walton Court & Hawkslade however, these are the only wards to rank within the top 1000 closest matches. The least similar ward in the district is Long Crendon, one of three wards in Aylesbury to rank lower than the 8,000th closest match along with Stewkley and Quainton. Furthermore, as stated previously, the ward has a low level of those educated to degree level or higher and those working in managerial, professional and technical roles. Gatehouse looks to have an average employment rate and level of working age residents. In contrast Gatehouse ranks in the top quartile for elementary occupations, with 14.2 per cent employed in these occupations. Skilled trades occupations service occupations Source: Census, ONS, 2011 5.0 Deprivation Buckinghamshire has the lowest level of economic deprivation of any Local Enterprise Partnership, with Aylesbury Vale having the 37th lowest economic deprivation of all 326 local authority districts in England, behind South Bucks (10th) and Chiltern (13th) but ahead of Wycombe (69th). Chart 4 wards among the least deprived in England with 17 of the 36 wards featuring among the least deprived 10 per cent of all wards in England and only six ranking among the most deprived half of English wards, a stark contrast to the London Borough of Newham where no ward ranks above halfway, highlighting the challenge Aylesbury Vale faces to attract resource tackle deprivation. P a g e | 7 Gatehouse has the 2383rd highest economic deprivation of the 7,664 wards in England and the 2nd most economically deprived of the 36 Aylesbury Vale wards. Gatehouse is the 6h most economically deprived among the 108 ward in Buckinghamshire. The position of ds in England is shown in below, with Gatehouse one of the 2 wards fourth most deprived decile. Nationally, the closest matches are Delapre & Briar Hill (Northampton) and Shepway North (Maidstone) while Southcourt and Quarrendon are the most similar in Aylesbury Vale ranking as the 33rd and 273rd most similar of all English wards. Of the 36 Aylesbury Vale wards, only three are among the 1,000 best matches. However, Gatehouse has 13 wards outside the 7000 closest matches including Marsh Gibbon at 7474th and Stewkley at 7521st.
