July 2019 Edition of the VISION BULLETIN Blind Sports NSW Edited by Murray Elbourn July 2019 edition of THE VISION BULLETIN Blind Sports NSW Blind Sports NSW & Disabled Wintersport Australia Host First Winter Sports Camp Blind Sports NSW and Disabled Wintersport Australia joined forces to host the first Winter Sports Camp in Jindabyne for Blind Sports NSW members aged 12 and up. The camp took place from Friday 5th - Sunday 7th July with campers having the opportunity to try skiing or snowboarding. Australian Paralympic skier and Blind Sports NSW Board Member, Melissa Perrine, accompanied the campers over the weekend and was thrilled to see them gain confidence and learn new skills out on the snow. “All in all, it was completely awesome to see these six be introduced to a com- pletely foreign environment for the first time, asked to trust sighted guides that they had never met whilst learning a new skill, and not only doing so, but succeeding with such enthusiasm,” Mel said. “I honestly can't wait until next camp.” The campers were also lucky enough to be joined by Paralympians Victoria Pendergast and Pat- rick Jensen who gave up their time to offer support and encouragement to the campers over the weekend. Blind Sports NSW would like to thank guides, volunteers and campers for their involvement Inside this issue: and we look for- ward to hosting Winter Camp 1 more snow camps Blind Tennis 2 in the future! Represented were the following players: Lindsay Heaven, Shaun Fitzpatrick, Oscar Stubbs, Sean Brown, Ben Felton, Vaugh Rolls, Nathan Letts with coach Jason Stubbs. Moving through their pool of 7 teams Australia had wins over Great Britain, South Korea, Germany and Spain to finish 3rd in their pool with losses to China and Israel. In their quarter final they played Canada who finished 4th at the 2018 IBSA Goalball World Championships in Sweden. Canada defeat- ed Australia at the 2015 IBSA World Games in their Bronze Medal play off so Australia was hoping to turn the tables on Canada. Canada went up 1-0 however the Aussie Belles stormed back and played some amaz- ing defence to defeat Canada 5-1 and ad- vance to the semi-finals. In the Semi Final they played China who they lost to in pool play and who were the eventual winners of the tournament going undefeated through the entire event. Austral- ia kept fighting but eventually lost 4-8. They then played Israel in the Bronze Medal game however Lihi Ben David who was named player of the Tournament struck with early goals and Australia didn’t rebound losing 2- 12 to finish 4th at the event. NSW would like to congratulate Brodie Smith, Tyan Taylor and assistant coach Simon Smith for their high achievements. The team will now look forward to their regional qualification event in Chiba, Japan this December. i SPORT PERFORMANCE AWARDS PROGRAM OF EVENTS 10 DECEMBER 2019 THE STAR, SYDNEY JOIN THE CONVERSATION #ASPAS @theAIS THE AIS SPORT PERFORMANCE AWARDS ARE BROADCAST ON ABC GRANDSTAND DIGITAL, ONLINE AND VIA THE ABC LISTEN APP AIS SPORT PERFORMANCE AWARDS PROGRAM OF EVENTS 1 A MESSAGE FROM PROUDLY SUPPORTING SENATOR THE HON. RICHARD COLBECK OUR EMERGING Welcome to the 2019 AIS Sport Performance Awards. For many of Australia’s athletes, their families and supporters, coaches and high performance ATHLETES staff, the next seven months leading into Tokyo 2020 represents the culmination of years of training, competing and dreaming. For everyday Australians, athletes in the green and gold on the international stage play a crucial role in motivating and inspiring us to get active and involved in physical activity. That’s why ‘achieving sporting excellence’ is a key priority of the Federal Government’s National Sport Plan, Sport 2030. Built around the pillars of participation, performance, integrity and industry, Sport 2030 is our clear and bold vision for sport in Australia — to ensure we are the world’s most active and healthy nation, known for our integrity and sporting success. Australia’s success on the international stage depends on a united and collaborative high performance sports system. Last month, I joined with Ministers of Sport from around the country to approve the historic National High Performance Sport Strategy 2024 (NHPSS). Approval of the NHPSS signals the first time all states and territories have agreed to an aligned high performance strategy and is recognition of a unified Australian system. With input from across sport led by the AIS, along with State and Territory Institutes and Academies of Sport, the NHPSS demonstrates the value of collaboration between the various governments of Australia to foster a shared approach to investment, responsibility and accountability.
