H T KIDS IN THE KITCHEN Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen is an Association-wide initiative of The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) designed to help com- munities address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition. Launched in 2006 by Junior Leagues in over 225 communities in four countries, the program is now in its fourth year. April, 2009 No. 8 The key to reversing the trend toward increased levels of childhood obesi- ty is through educating both children and their families. The Junior E-Insight Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative aims to make an impact in this area by educating the public at the grassroots level regarding solutions that they might adopt. AJLI provides materials to support the success of these activ- ities and also continues to distribute recipes and tips on nutrition on a web- NEXT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP site, which is www.kidsinthekitchen.org. MEETING To date, the Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative has reached more PLACEMENT FAIR than 450 million people through media coverage with messages and mate- rials that promote healthy lifestyles for youth. PRESENTATIONS BY It was within this context that this year’s JLP Provisional Class decided to COMMITTEE CHAIRS dedicate their year of work towards creating a Kids in the Kitchen program here in Pasadena. This year’s JLP’s Kids in the Kitchen follows a nautical 7:30-9:00 P.M. PLACEMENT FAIR theme – so come and Cruise Your Way to a Healthy Day! Kids will partic- ipate on teams in various great activities – visiting multiple “ports” and KIDSPACE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM “docks” such as the Fitness/Nutrition Dock, the Craft Port, and the Hand 480 N. ARROYO BLVD., PASADENA Washing Station. Kids will have “passports” for traveling between “ports” and “docks” – a great event for children and parents alike. The event is Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Madison Elementary UPCOMING DATES School. SUNDAY, APRIL 5 10AM - 2PM We look forward to experiencing the Kids in the Kitchen program that the 2008 - 2009 Provisional Class has added to the Junior League of Pasadena. I want to congratulate the Taylor Katrina Onderdonk Nominating and Placement Committee for their dedication in slating next year’s leadership positions and to recognize our Community Director many courageous volunteers who said “Yes” to become one of our JLP Leaders for the Megan Daugherty 2009-10 year. This is an exciting time and, needless to say, I am thrilled for each and every one of you. I’ve already heard the question being Fundraising Director asked “What are you thinking about doing next year?” Before you answer that ques- Alexandra Zucco tion, I encourage you to think about the many placement options provided to you and to “think outside the box” and try something new. SPAC Senior Deborah Yim On a personal note, throughout my many years in the League, each year I was convinced that my path would lead me to a particular committee or area. These members believed in my potential and recognized something that I didn’t’ see in myself. Opportunities Location: Kidspace Date: April 28, 2009 Time: 7p.m. - New Committee Chairs present 2009-2010 7:30 - 9 p.m. – Placement Fair The 2009-2010 Junior League of Pasadena, Inc. year brings several changes. The April Placement Fair will offer insight into new committee opportunities. Please arrive by 7:00 p.m. as we will have a quick formal presentation from each new committee chair. There have been several changes to the struc- ture of some committees, and some committees have been combined – this is an opportunity to get an overview of each committee opportunity. At 7:30 p.m. we will begin the Placement Fair, where you will have the chance to ask questions one-on-one and visit each table representing the many ways to get involved. This is your chance to find the committees that best suit your interests within the Junior League of Pasadena - take advantage of it. Garden Tour of Six Pasadena Garden Treasures This is a potluck style picnic (a great chance to use your JLP cookbook recipes). See you on the 12th! 3 SPAC Visits With Senator Carol Liu and Assembly Member Anthony Portantino In March, SPAC representatives Deborah Yim and Marah Lyvers had legislative visits with Senator Carol Liu and Assembly Member Anthony Portantino. The legislators were excited about JLP and our Girls Rock! projects. They were also inter- ested in hearing about SPAC’s new sponsored legislation, Assembly Bill 159, the Healthy Mother’s Act, which promotes edu- cation and awareness about Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (which affects pregnant women and new mothers). Look in the next Insight for a detailed Fact Sheet about AB 159! Senator Carol Liu was elected to her current position last year. She represents the 21st district which includes the cities of Pasadena, Burbank, Glendale, La Canada Flintridge, San Gabriel, Temple City and various Los Angeles communities. She has also served as a state Assembly Member and La Canada Flintridge City Council Member and Mayor. Her background is as an educator, in teaching and administration. She chairs the Senate Human Services Committee and sits on the Budget and Fiscal Review Committee; Banking, Finance and Insurance Committee; Elections, Reapportionment and Constitutional Amendments Committee; Public Employees and Retirement Committee; and Select Committee on Climate Change.
