Two-meter-tall dorsal fin slicing through the water’s surface. An attraction at SeaWorld. A pack hunter with cunning intelligence and stunning power. The killer whale, or orca, is one of the most universally known animals in the world. They are also one of the most wide- spread mammals, second only to humans, and inhabit all of the world’s oceans. Yet scientists are still working to deter- mine how many species of killer whales exist. Only one species is currently rec- ognized, but many people, including researcher Robert Pitman, believe there may be two additional species among the estimated 20,000 to 80,000 killer whales that inhabit Antarctic waters. Pitman is far from the first to believe this: Soviet 5 Union whalers in the early 1980s first Deep Freeze turns 0 observed the killer whales’ differences in diet, preferred habitat and coloring. Behrendt The University of Wisconsin Geophysical and Polar Research Center 6021 South Highland Road The Highlands Madison 5, Wisconsin PREFACE This report contains a previously published discussion of the cal and glaciological geophysi- work on the Filchner ice shelf (Behrendt, 1962) to- gether with a tabulation of data and photo copies of representative seismic records for each of the reflection stations. ABSTRACT Geophysical and glaciological data collected during the IGY in the Filchner ice shelf area have been reported previously, and some of the se are included here to present a more unified picture of the region. A large trough underlies the eastern section of the ice shelf and extends into the unexplored area at its head. Although the trough is not iso- statically compensated locally, the area as a whole is essentially in isostatic equilibrium. The elevation of the M discontinuity is about -31 kin, which is consistent with that expected for a continental margin, Berkner island is a grounded ice feature on Berkner bank, which gravity data indicate is probably composed of morainal material. The eastern section of the shelf is flowing seaward at a high rate, and the amount of ice lost at the ice front is greater than accumulation on the shelf, I I I CONTENTS Page Introduction . -

The crustal blocks of West Antarctica form part of this margin, with 30 Palaeozoic – Mesozoic magmatism particularly well preserved in the Antarctic Peninsula and Marie 31 Byrd Land. Magmatic events on the intervening Thurston Island crustal block are poorly defined, 32 which has hindered accurate correlations along the margin. Six samples are dated here using U-Pb 33 geochronology and cover the geological history on Thurston Island. The basement gneisses from 34 Morgan Inlet have a protolith age of 349 ± 2 Ma and correlate closely with the Devonian – 35 Carboniferous magmatism of Marie Byrd Land and New Zealand. -

Activities Little America Station Station Activities - On May 17, 22 percent of the cargo remained on the barrier edge. This material consists entirely of fuel and during the following week 4800 gallons were moved to the station. A five kw generator has been installed on a weasel, providing a portable floodlight system of six 500 watt lights for the station. A Little America Station University of Antarctica has been established and courses in calculus, Spanish, photography, Bible studies, choir and drama are being given. A series of special lectures on the geophysical sciences under observation at the station are also scheduled. On May 18 it was reported that the new amateur communication instellation had been completed. Ionospheric Physics - On May 24 it was reported that the C-4 recorder was operati 3moothJ.y and that regular scaling had been ca:ried out since May 11. (The quality of the records, however, is not yet completely satisfactory.) Meteorology - All meteorology programs are in full operation. Sixty- one successful balloon ascents have been made with a resultant average height of 18,825 meters. The carbon dioxide analyzer is working satis- factorily. The infra-red hydrometer shutter was found to be loose and has been repaired and the bridge circuit changed back to the original specifications. On May 11, while the South Pole Station was recording the lowest temperature ever recorded,-100.40F, Little America was suffering the effects of +30° temperatures.
