Central Library Façade Restoration

We are pleased to fi nally be able to provide you with an update on Central Library’s facade restoration. Given the historic status of the building, much care, thought and deliberation was given on how to best move the project forward. The Public Works Department concluded that breaking the project into two phases was the best approach. Phase I consisted of painting the building’s south facade. Phase II will be restoration of the great arched windows and surrounding stonework.

Phase I was completed in December. Access was a challenge. A large lift was brought in to the interior patios to reach the uppermost regions of the facade. By using a lift, the roof was left untouched, preventing damage to the tiles.

Phase II required a comprehensive bid process. Consultant ONYX Architects was selected by the Public Works Department to guide the city on historic restoration. The Pasadena fi rm has extensive historic restoration experience, including city projects. Its recent La Casita del Arroyo project resulted in the city receiving a historic restoration award.

ONYX will assist the city in drafting the specifi cations for the remaining work, selecting the contractor and overseeing construction. The restoration work is scheduled to be completed in December.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your gifts in making this restoration possible.
