During the period of the Saxons, the natural forests of Devon are gradually cleared and most of the villages and settlements we take for granted in the countryside are established. 905 Bishop Putta is murdered – some say at the spot where Copplestone cross stands. 909 Diocese of Crediton created. 934-53 Bishop Ethelgar collects funds for the building of St Mary’s Minster at Crediton. 974 Copplestone Cross, at the junction of Down St Mary with two other parishes until 1992, is mentioned in a charter, but is much older than that. It is early Celtic interlaced work such as is not found elsewhere in England except in Northumbria. The cross gives a name to a once noted Devon family which comes in the local rhyme: Crocker, Cruwys, and Coplestone, When the Conqueror came were found at home. Eleventh Century 1018 Buckfast Abbey is founded under the patronage of King Canute. 1040 The Manor of Down(e) named after the Saxon settlement DUN meaning Hill, first recorded as being the gift of King Harthacnut. (Harthacnut was king of Denmark from 1028 to 1042 and of England from 1040 to 1042. Some of the glebe land in the manor originally formed part of the Devon estates of Harthacnut’s father, Canute, king of England 1016-35.) (a) Public Health (Councillor Connett) Devon County Council notes: * the vital role played by Public Health in helping Devon residents to lead healthier lives by, for example, avoiding diseases, unwanted pregnancies, support to stop smoking, and eating better; * with grave concern the announcement of a further £85m cut to the Public Health Budget, as one of 12 Ministerial statements published by the Government on the last day of the Parliamentary term before Christmas, only weeks after the Secretary of State for Health described prevention as his priority; and * this is on top of cuts to the Public Health budget announced since Summer 20 * 15, now totalling just over £600 million. This Council meeting further notes: * the comments of the Health Foundation, who described these cuts as a false economy and who have calculated that an additional £3bn a year is required to reverse the impact of government cuts to the Public Health grant to date and have called for this increased budget to be allocated according to need; and * the warnings from the King’s Fund that such cuts could put pressure on councils to cut non-statutory sexual health prevention services, which could lead to more sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies.

    Holy Cross, Crediton - Rector's Report APCM October 2020 It hardly seems like 18 months since our last APCM when I gave my initial Rector's report, about a month after my Induction as Rector. Time, indeed, passes swiftly. 2019 My arrival in the parish was just before the beginning of Lent and it was good to see the Lent study groups meeting throughout the Lenten season. I was delighted to see a range of courses offered and underpins my belief that study and learning are an important part of our common life together as Christians. We kept Holy Week with Compline and a devotional address on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by the customary acts of worship on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Day. My first Lent, Holy Week and Easter at Holy Cross was truly memorable! At the beginning of June we were treated to a spectacular Flower Festival on the theme of 'Colours of the Wind'. It was much enjoyed and those visiting numbered into the thousands. Events such as these are missional because they provide an opportunity to welcome people and to tell them something of the Christian story. Devon County Council declared St Boniface as patron saint of Devon during early June and we held a joint service to celebrate this. It was led by The Bishop of Crediton and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Plymouth. We began our worship at Holy Cross before moving to the statue in Newcombe's Meadow, with the final part of the service at St Boniface RC church.
