ADAM SANDLER: MENTOR OF MIDDLE-CLASS MASCULINITY AND MANHOOD A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Stanislaus In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in History By Kathleen Boone Chapman April 2014 CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL ADAM SANDLER: MENTOR OF MASCULINITY AND FATHERHOOD by Kathleen Boone Chapman Signed Certification of Approval Page is on file with the University Library Dr. Bret E. Carroll Date Professor of History Dr. Samuel Regalado Date Professor of History Dr. Marcy Rose Chvasta Date Professor of Communications © 2014 Kathleen Boone Chapman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DEDICATION I am dedicating this work to my three dear friends: Ronda James, Candace Paulson, and Michele Sniegoski. Ronda’s encouragement and obedience to the Lord gave me what I needed to go back to school with significant health issues and so late in life. Candace, who graduated from Stanford “back in the olden days,” to quote our kids, inspired me to follow my dream and become all God wants me to be. Michele’s long struggle with terminal kidney disease motivated me to keep living in spite of my own health issues. We have laughed and cried together over many years, but all of you have given me strength to carry on. Sorry two of you made it to heaven before I could get this finished. I also want to give credit to my husband of forty years who has been a faithful breadwinner, proof-reader, and a paragon of patience. What more could any woman ask for? He has also put up with me yelling at my computer and cursing Bill Gates – A LOT. -

Prof. Melis Behlil September, 2013 This thesis aims to investigate a recent trend in contemporary American cinema, which I call “bromantic comedy.” These comedy films have been increasingly coming out since the early 2000s. They are defined by their considerable use of gross-out humor, and their depiction of the average American male. Bromantic comedies direct their attention to homosocial interaction, or “bromance”, as well as heterosexual relationships. Since it is a fairly recent phenomenon, there is little relevant academic research conducted on the genre. -

Bottle Rocket Production Information
Bottle Rocket Production Information Anthony (Luke Wilson) has been discharged from the mental hospital where he was treated for "exhaustion." To accommodate the fantasies of his lifelong friend Dignan (Owen C. Wilson), he gets permission to climb down a bed sheet rather than simply walk out the front door. Thus begins the story of three Texas boys whose lives show that loyalty, friendship and commitment are not always virtues but collectively can sometimes begin to resemble stupidity. These three friends -- inextricably, if unconventionally, linked -- are searching for something. Something they often can't articulate or even identify, but they know it's special. Anthony seeks true love. Bob (Robert Musgrave) yearns for family. Dignan (Owen C. Wilson) pursues a distinguished position amongst thieves and con-artists. Anthony, Bob and Dignan will get what they want but in ways they never expected. Bottle Rocket tells the gently comic story of three devoted, would-be thieves who prove the importance of friendship, honor and duty as they ineptly pursue a life of crime. Directed by Wes Anderson, Bottle Rocket is written by Owen C. Wilson and Wes Anderson. In addition to Owen C. Wilson, Luke Wilson and Robert Musgrave, the film also stars Andrew Wilson, Lumi Cavazos and James Caan as Mr. Henry. Polly Platt and Cynthia Hargrave are the producers. The executive producers are James L. Brooks, Richard Sakai, Barbara Boyle and Michael Taylor. Robert Yeoman is the director of photography; David Wasco is the production designer; David Moritz is the editor. The film is co-produced by Ray Zimmerman and L.M. -

Short Synopsis: August 1st 1966 was the day our innocence was shattered. A sniper rode the elevator to the top floor of the iconic University of Texas Tower and opened fire, holding the campus hostage for 96 minutes in what was a previously unimaginable event. TOWER combines archival footage with rotoscopic animation of the dramatic day, based entirely on first person testimonies from witnesses, heroes and survivors, in a seamless and suspenseful retelling of the unfolding tragedy. The film highlights the fear, confusion, and visceral realities that changed the lives of those present, and the rest of us, forever - a day when the worst in one man brought out the best in so many others. Long Synopsis: On August 1st, 1966, a sniper rode the elevator to the top floor of the University of Texas Tower and opened fire, holding the campus hostage for 96 minutes. A Community of Characters – the Narrative Self in the Films of Wes Anderson Abstract This essay is a reflection upon the work of writer-director Wes Anderson. Anderson's first three films, Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums, contain common themes which I assert provide fertile ground for theological reflection. This discussion will focus on two aspects of the characters that populate Anderson's mythopoetic world(s) – firstly, the construction of the narrative self; and secondly, the vitality of community which fundamentally precedes authentic personhood. This article is available in Journal of Religion & Film: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/jrf/vol9/iss2/3 Hancock: A Community of Characters In his 1999 article "If I Can Dream: The Everlasting Boyhoods of Wes Anderson,” Mark Olsen dubbed the young filmmaker the beginning of a movement he called "the New Sincerity.” Olsen hints at the possible criteria for the New Sincerity when he notes that: Unlike many writer-directors of his generation, Wes Anderson does not view his characters from some distant Olympus of irony. -
