1 Male Masculinity as the Celebration of Failure: The Frat Pack, Women, and the Trauma of Victimization in the “Dude Flick” Peter Alilunas In a scene early in The Break-Up (2006, dir. Peyton Reed), during an argument about the deterioration of their relationship, Gary (Vince Vaughn) and Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) exchange a heated series of comments over Gary’s lack of effort. In a moment of intense anger, Gary lashes out at Brooke, accusing her of constantly “nagging” him: Brooke: “You think that I nag you?” Gary: “That’s all you do. All you do is nag me. The bathroom’s a mess, your belt doesn’t match. Hey, Gary you should probably go work out. Nothing I ever do is ever good enough. I just want to be left the hell alone.” A moment midway through Old School (2003, dir. Todd Phillips), also starring Vaughn, compliments this sequence. Bernard Campbell (Vaughn) hosts a birthday party for his young son around a backyard pool. Bernard’s clothing makes the scene unusual: unlike all of his adult friends, who wore outfits typical for thirty-something males, Bernard sits calmly by the pool dressed in clown suit, complete with costume, wig, makeup, red nose, and oversized shoes—all the while smoking a cigarette and drinking from a bottle of beer. Though this startling image seems initially to merely conform to the film’s overall project of presenting its protagonists (a group of dissatisfied adult men who start a fraternity) in a series of bizarre and ridiculous situations, it also graphically represents the conventional cinematic man (middle-class, heterosexual, white, early middle-aged) as both ridiculous and even slightly disturbed. -

Bottle Rocket Production Information
Bottle Rocket Production Information Anthony (Luke Wilson) has been discharged from the mental hospital where he was treated for "exhaustion." To accommodate the fantasies of his lifelong friend Dignan (Owen C. Wilson), he gets permission to climb down a bed sheet rather than simply walk out the front door. Thus begins the story of three Texas boys whose lives show that loyalty, friendship and commitment are not always virtues but collectively can sometimes begin to resemble stupidity. These three friends -- inextricably, if unconventionally, linked -- are searching for something. Something they often can't articulate or even identify, but they know it's special. Anthony seeks true love. Bob (Robert Musgrave) yearns for family. Dignan (Owen C. Wilson) pursues a distinguished position amongst thieves and con-artists. Anthony, Bob and Dignan will get what they want but in ways they never expected. Bottle Rocket tells the gently comic story of three devoted, would-be thieves who prove the importance of friendship, honor and duty as they ineptly pursue a life of crime. Directed by Wes Anderson, Bottle Rocket is written by Owen C. Wilson and Wes Anderson. In addition to Owen C. Wilson, Luke Wilson and Robert Musgrave, the film also stars Andrew Wilson, Lumi Cavazos and James Caan as Mr. Henry. Polly Platt and Cynthia Hargrave are the producers. The executive producers are James L. Brooks, Richard Sakai, Barbara Boyle and Michael Taylor. A Community of Characters – the Narrative Self in the Films of Wes Anderson Abstract This essay is a reflection upon the work of writer-director Wes Anderson. Anderson's first three films, Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums, contain common themes which I assert provide fertile ground for theological reflection. This discussion will focus on two aspects of the characters that populate Anderson's mythopoetic world(s) – firstly, the construction of the narrative self; and secondly, the vitality of community which fundamentally precedes authentic personhood. About a Boy Dir: Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, 2002 A review by Juliette Wells, Yale University, USA With the exception of the recent (and ongoing) film adaptations of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings books, critical discussions of movies don't usually examine closely the necessarily complex relationship between a film and the literary work on which it is based. This doesn't mean that critics completely ignore the fact that a film is an adaptation rather than a wholly original enterprise. Indeed, critics often compare a book to its film adaptation, usually to the benefit of the book, or comment briefly on the overall effectiveness of the translation effort, judging whether the film is prosy or insufficiently cinematic. In addition, they sometimes call attention to any significant differences between the source and the screenplay that are not attributable solely to the twin necessities of compressing a plot and telling a story visually. In all of these cases, however, the critic's mandate is to determine whether or not the film succeeds as a film. If it does, the liberties it takes with its source -- and what those liberties suggest about the motives behind adapting books to film for contemporary audiences -- go unremarked. Nick Hornby's novels offer an especially fruitful opportunity for examining the implications of adaptation because they seem, in many ways, designed to work well on film. Not only are they full of pithy, quirky dialogue and unusual but appealing characters, but they feature plots that are easy to streamline and plenty of pop music just waiting to go on the soundtrack. -

Vaughn Vreeland Media Arts and Entertainment and French Elon University Abstract Filmmaker Wes Anderson has developed a distinct aesthetic style that is easily recognizable through his use of striking color palettes. The purpose of this research was to draw conclusions about social stratification, social construction and the role of family as they relate to color palettes in Anderson’s films. Relying on the auteur theory, the research related Anderson’s personal experiences with those of his characters and aimed at discerning the importance of color as it connects to social structure. I. Introduction Since the turn of the 20th century, cinema has been embedded cross-culturally as a social lens through which societal norms and values are portrayed. Cinema’s effectiveness hinges on many factors that can make a particular story powerful. Unique screenplays, popular actors, state-of-the-art cameras, lighting and sound design all play large roles in the value of a production. Blockbuster films do well at the box office for their promotional appeal, yet le septième art, the seventh art as cinema is commonly known, is deeply rooted in artistic interpretation. Aesthetic input is arguably the most powerful tool a director has in establishing a specific tone and connecting it to the hearts of his or her audience. Directorial style transcends the art of moviemaking in itself. Often times, it becomes a defining generational trait or a way of life. -
