Tutti i riferimenti ai personaggi storici citati sono reali, anche se la ricostru- zione dei dialoghi, le valutazioni storico-politiche e i giudizi estetici sono da ricondurre esclusivamente all’Autore. RINGRAZIAMENTI Ringrazio, di cuore, donna Violetta e il figlio Antonio Vasilij Sava- rese, per l’onore e la fiducia, che mi hanno concesso, nel poter racco- gliere, dalla viva voce della protagonista, alcuni elementi biografici di una vicenda, umana, artistica e familiare, assolutamente straordinaria, utilizzati in un romanzo, frutto di invenzione narrativa, ancorché vero- simile; il professor Salvatore Ferraro, per la preziosa documentazione su Vico Equense e per la rigorosa correzione delle bozze di stampa; il dottor Riccardo Piroddi, per le fondamentali ricerche sulla storia del balletto, e la designer Teresa Biagioli, per la raffinata copertina. Vico Equense: il paradiso di Violetta Quella sera di inizio novembre, a Vico Equense, soffiava una frizzante brezza di terra, dolce, tiepida, quasi eccitante, che stava chiudendo una giornata eccezionalmente calda, piena di sole, luminosa, tersa, densa di colori, quasi trattarsi di un’incipiente prima- vera, piuttosto che l’epilogo della stagione autun- nale. Un autunno, quell’anno, senza piogge, tanto da destare legittime preoccupazioni nelle famiglie conta- dine, delle vere ambasce, che diventavano oggetto di animate discussioni tra i tavolini dei bar di piazza Umberto I, con due preoccupati interrogativi: le muta- zioni meteorologiche, non più occasionali, a conferma di un cambiamento radicale delle stagioni tradizionali, avrebbero inciso sulla vita delle aziende agricole, sulla tipologia delle colture e sui tempi di coltivazione delle stesse? Avrebbero modificato, nel tempo, l’assetto idro- geologico di quella terra meravigliosa, benedetta da Dio, porta di accesso alla costiera sorrentino-amalfi- tana, sintesi perfetta della creazione, scrigno, unico al mondo, di multiformi bellezze naturalistiche? A partire dall’alta montagna, che digradava dolce- mente, quasi impercettibilmente, tra panorami mozza- fiato, fino alle ciottolose spiagge, bagnate da un mare 5 sempre azzurro, e calava, tra borghi e casali collinari, lungo le numerose frazioni: la suggestiva Pietrapiana; l’antica Bonea, a ridosso del centro cittadino; Sant’An- drea, arroccata sui clivi del monte; San Salvatore, raccolta intorno alla chiesa; la placida Massaquano, piena di noceti; Patierno, rinomata per i molti caseifici; la stessa Monte Faito, verde e rocciosa; Moiano, dalle origini leggendarie; Santa Maria del Castello, sospesa sul crinale tra Vico Equense e Positano; Ticciano, ricca di uliveti e di frutteti; Preazzano, terra della cele- brata melanzana; Arola, estesa e arroccata insieme; Alberi, la frazione-balcone, con la vista proiettata sulla costiera; Pacognano, vocata alla preghiera; Fornacelle, inventrice, a Natale, del presepe vivente; l’aristocra- tica Montechiaro, e, infine, più avanti, verso Sorrento, l’orgogliosa Seiano, piccolo regno nel Regno, quasi un mondo a sé stante. A metà strada, tra la montagna e le spiagge, si affer- mava, poi, il piano, nel quale trionfava il cuore pulsante della vita cittadina, il centro urbano, che inclinava verso l’orlo estremo della costa alta, con gli imponenti palazzi signorili e i conventi, a precipizio sul mare, dirimpettai del Vesuvio, che sembravano sfidare le leggi della statica, fino a quel suggello stupefacente della Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata, autentico miracolo costruttivo, incastonato, come una gemma preziosa, nella roccia calcarea, divenuto il simbolo supremo della religiosità dei Vicani e il locus sacer della memoria collettiva. La chiesa, definita uno scrigno di arte sacra, immersa in un contesto paesaggistico irripetibile, 6 rappresentava, per i Vicani, una lauda creaturarum al Signore, come quella del “Cantico” del poverello di Assisi, in quanto il tempio era stato legato a tutte le vicende più importanti di Vico Equense, fin dal XIII secolo. Fu il vescovo Giovanni Cimino a fare edifi- care, tra il 1320 e il 1330, una nuova cattedrale su quel costone di roccia, alto 90 metri, a picco sul mare, sopra il borgo marinaro. Il tempio, che fu sede vescovile fino al 1799, esponeva, al suo interno, trenta affreschi, raffi- guranti i vescovi vicani, non l’ultimo, rappresentato da un putto, che intimava di fare silenzio. Il putto ritraeva idealmente l’ultimo dei vescovi di Vico Equense, quel Michele Natale, impiccato dalla restaurazione borbo- nica per avere aderito alla Repubblica Napoletana. Non più cattedrale dal 1818, perché inglobata nell’arcidiocesi di Sorrento, rimaneva l’esempio più raffinato di archi- tettura gotica della costiera sorrentina, con la facciata barocca, a presidio della costa e a difesa spirituale della comunità vicana. Tra quell’insieme, suggestivo, unico e irripetibile, di creazione divina e di opera dell’uomo, intreccio di storia, di fede e di tradizioni secolari, che era diven- tata Vico Equense, e quella donna, Violetta, non più giovane, venuta da lontano, signora elegante e piena di fascino, quasi diafana, stella sconosciuta ai più, che viveva, da oltre mezzo secolo, nel recinto dorato di uno di quei palazzi aviti, di fronte al golfo di Napoli, esisteva un legame interiore, profondo, misterico, fatto di passione, di rinunce, di sentimenti, di sfide, di paure e di scelte intrepide di vita. Un legame intenso, 7 sbocciato, per caso, tanti anni prima, mai interrotto e giammai rinnegato, coltivato nell’intimità, senza clamori, senza ostentazioni, quasi claustrale, custodito nel silenzio discreto della propria dimensione fami- liare. Un legame misterioso, vissuto con la sensibilità propria di una grande artista, protagonista della danza mondiale, la quale aveva avuto il coraggio e la deter- minazione di abbandonare il successo internazionale, le luci della ribalta e gli applausi dei teatri più impor- tanti del mondo, per vivere il proprio sogno d’amore in una terra nuova e straniera. Un’esistenza appartata, tra danza e amore, le cui vicende, umane e artistiche, non erano più disgiungibili da quel luogo fatato, che per lei era stato complice. Era stata una bella giornata di sole, quella, una gior- nata del tutto speciale, anticipo di una serata altrettanto speciale, per la quale la donna si stava preparando, interpretata senza apparenti emozioni, che, tuttavia, erano serpeggiate e serpeggiavano sotto lo studiato distacco di chi era abituata alla severa disciplina dei movimenti del corpo e dei moti dell’animo. La donna, infatti, come al solito, quando la temperatura esterna lo consentiva, non appena essersi risvegliata nella tardissima mattinata, aveva fatto la sua parca cola- zione, ancora in vestaglia, preparata dal fedele aiutante indiano, Shankar, sulla terrazza del suo appartamento, all’ultimo piano del palazzo di famiglia, dal quale si godeva il panorama più bello del mondo. Lo sguardo della signora, palesemente compiaciuto per quella sorprendente giornata, aveva sfiorato, quasi accarezzato, come faceva da decenni, gli elementi di quel capolavoro della Natura, senza rinunziare, come ogni mattina, di ogni giorno, in tutte le stagioni, di ammirare, per prima, la Chiesa della Santissima Annun- ziata, sottostante alla sua terrazza, in un saluto rituale, tra il sacro e il profano, segnandosi con la croce, che le ricordava il marito scomparso, a quel tempio legato da una sincera venerazione: la costa, gli anfratti, le grotte, gli scogli, ormai divenuti amichevoli, la superficie del mare e, sullo sfondo, via Caracciolo, a Napoli, le falde del Vesuvio e il cielo cilestrino, limpido come non mai. “Mahōdayā Violetta, ho molto pregato ieri sera, prima di addormentarmi, Surya, il nostro dio del sole e della vitalità, affinché le regalasse, per questo suo compleanno, una giornata piena di luce. Surya mi ha esaudito. Da noi, gli anniversari della nascita delle persone più sagge rappresentano un evento importante, una festa di tutti. Offriamo loro doni utili, in segno di rispetto, e ne riceviamo una benedizione, con l’elargi- zione delle quattro grazie: una lunga vita, un bell’a- spetto, la tranquillità e l’energia. E, poi, buttiamo, in segno di purificazione, l’acqua addosso ai passanti...”. La donna, totalmente immersa nello scenario del golfo, a quelle ultime parole sembrò scuotersi, non rinunziando, nel rispondere, all’acquisito humour anglosassone: “Shankar, mica vorrai buttare l’acqua dalle fine- stre? Non credo che i miei concittadini vicani apprez- zerebbero!”. “Mahōdayā, sono arrivati già molti telegrammi e tanti fiori...”. 9 “Shankar, non ti preoccupare, risponderò alle tele- fonate e ringrazierò tutti nel pomeriggio, anche il tuo dio Surya”. La voce si era interrotta, un segnale per l’aiutante, che subito si allontanò, lasciandola,

    PRELIMINARY SYLLABUS Stanford Continuing Studies, HIS 199, 2 units Spring Quarter 2018 St. Petersburg: A Cultural Biography Tuesdays, 7:00 pm - 8:50 pm Course Subject In this leCture Course we will explore the riCh Cultural history of St. Petersburg, Russia, through the works of its arChiteCts, planners, artists, writers, and Composers. LeCtures will be slide-illustrated. No prior knowledge of Russian history, arChiteCture, urban design, or art is assumed, although any of those backgrounds will be useful, and your Contributions will be welcome. Few Cities in the world lend themselves so readily to a study of their Cultural "biography" as St. Petersburg. Founded just over 300 years ago (1703) by Peter I the Great, St. Petersburg was "premeditated" (umyshlennyi, Dostoevsky's term) as the planned, rational, West-European-styled Capital City of the Russian Empire, a deliberate Counterpoise to MosCow and its tradition-bound MusCovite Culture. From its inCeption until the present, St. Petersburg has raised more questions than answers in the Russian mind: Is it Russian or West European? And what of modern (post-Peter the Great) Russia itself: Is it European, or something else? Through the arChiteCture, City planning, art, and literature of St. Petersburg, we will follow the Cultural evolution and mythology of the City, from Peter to Putin. Lectures will be slide-illustrated, drawing on my ColleCtion of photographs I have made in Russia over the last 59 years.     FOR SOME, LIFE IS TO BE LIVED AS AN Impresario Sergei Diaghilev (1872–1929) Russian promoter and catalyst for innovation in the arts who revitalized ballet by integrating the ideals of other art forms — music, design, and drama — with those of dance. Diaghilev (dee ah guh lef) showcased his own musical compositions before writing about art with a dazzling, innovative, unconventional perspective. He surrounded himself with influentials involved in cultural output. Thus in 1899, Diaghilev launched the magazine Mir Isskustva (“World of Art”). He became involved with the Maryinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia, managing editorial projects for the imperial venue as well as overseeing performances, quickly earning a reputation as a connoisseur of great artistic works. He took a Russian portraiture exhibit to Paris in 1907. There, he also assembled concerts featuring composers from his homeland and kept company with a circle of artists including Leon Balst, designer Alexandre Benois, choreograper Mikhail Fokine, fashion icon Coco Chanel, and artist Pablo Picasso. In 1909, Diaghilev founded the Ballets Russes, a dance company that changed the face of the performance world forever. Russes, with initial dance stars like Vaslav Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova and Ida Rubenstein, ran for two decades, satiating audiences’ hunger for new material. His artistic vision to blend the arts became international, tour Europe, South America, and the United States. Ballets Russes became known for movements not confined to classical dance, defying the convention that female dancers should always be delicate and giving male dancers more of a spotlight. Diaghilev supervised each production, integrating the story with music and design, ultimately creating a new standard.

    Johaar Mosaval From District Six to the Royal Ballet District Six like Harlem in New York also had its own “Harlem Renaissance” or cultural boom. Writers, composers, photographers, filmmakers, dramatists, poets, musicians, dancers, artists, socio-political activists flourished and exploded onto the world stage but were denied the opportunity for career advancement in their own homeland. Few other places can boast of such an explosion of talent and impact. It was nothing short of miraculous, given the adversity faced by the people. The District’s Hyman Lieberman and Marion Institutes were cultural centres of excellence. Down the road the Eoan Group was the launch-pad of many stars such as Johaar Mosaval who began his ballet career there. It was the start of a journey that led to the Royal Ballet Opera School in London and to him becoming a principle dancer with the Royal Ballet. Indeed, shamefully for the Apartheid government and the City authorities, and tragically for the people of the district, District Six, home of more than 60,000 people was demolished and its people forcibly removed under Apartheid’s ethnic cleansing programme for the City. Johaar Mosaval was born in District Six in Cape Town on 8 January 1928 and was one of nine children in his family.

Photography Branco Gaica 4 COPPÉLIA NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dame Peggy van Praagh’s fingerprints are on everything we do at The Australian Ballet. How lucky we are to have been founded by such a visionary woman, and to live with the bounty of her legacy every day. Nowhere is this legacy more evident than in her glorious production of Coppélia, which she created for the company in 1979 with two other magnificent artists: director George Ogilvie and designer Kristian Fredrikson. It was her parting gift to the company and it remains a jewel in the crown of our classical repertoire. Dame Peggy was a renowned Swanilda, and this was her second production of Coppélia. Her first was for the Borovansky Ballet in 1960; it was performed as part of The Australian Ballet’s first season in 1962, and was revived in subsequent years. When Dame Peggy returned to The Australian Ballet from retirement in 1978 she began to prepare this new production, which was to be her last. It is a timeless classic, and I am sure it will be performed well into the company’s future. Dame Peggy and Kristian are no longer with us, but in 2016 we had the great pleasure of welcoming George Ogilvie back to the company to oversee the staging of this production. George and Dame Peggy delved into the original Hoffmann story, layering this production with such depth of character and theatricality.

The superstars Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev danced it with us in 1964, in a production based on the Borovansky Ballet’s. Our founding artistic director, Peggy van Praagh, created her production in 1965; it premiered in Birmingham on the company’s first international tour, and won a Grand Prix for the best production staged in Paris that year. It went on to become one of the most frequently performed ballets in our repertoire. Peggy’s production came to a tragic end when the scenery was consumed by fire on our 1985 regional tour. The artistic director at the time, Maina Gielgud, created her own production a year later.

Kosygin Russian State University Abstract: The article reveals the role of the Russian ballet in the cultural pattern at the turn of the 20th century. Purpose of the article is to determine the direction of development of interaction between national choreography and artistic and imaginative interpretation of its synthetic whole against a background of complex and ambiguous processes taking course at critical stages of the Russian culture, based at the existing visual materials of archive and museum funds. An aspect of art review was selected, allowing consideration of the diverse options of synthesis of ballet and plastic arts. The attraction of the visual arts to “balletness” and the tendency of Russian choreography to rely on images of painting, graphics and sculpture characteristic to the turn of the century are two sides of the single process. In this context, the Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company, being saturated with expressive plastic spectacular imagery, served as the bright frame for the last stage of the Russian Silver Age.
