  • The Evolution of Malaysian Cartoon Animation
THE EVOLUTION OF MALAYSIAN CARTOON ANIMATION Faryna Mohd Khalis Normah Mustaffa Mohd Nor Shahizan Ali Neesa Ameera Mohamed Salim [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT A cartoon can be defined as an unrealistic style of sketching and or funny figures that can make people laugh. Aside from entertainment purposes, cartoons are also used to send messages without a serious tone and indirectly telling something sarcastically. In April 2019, Malaysia was shocked by the headline that ‘Doraemon’ had been selected to represent the Japanese themed cartoon exhibition in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020. Malaysian art activists, specifically those who has a cartoon animation background, were very upset and expressed their dissatisfaction with the news. Local legendary cartoonist Datuk Lat also showed his disappointment and made a stand that a local cartoon character should have been chosen to represent Malaysia. Therefore, this research aims to illustrate the development of Malaysian cartoons from when they first started in newspapers, until their existence today in the form of animation on digital platforms. In sequence, Malaysia produced cartoons in newspapers, magazines, blogs, television and cinema, whereby this is in parallel with the development of technology. From hand- drawn art for ‘Usop Sontorian’ to digital animation for the film ‘Upin dan Ipin’, Malaysians should be more appreciative and proud of our local cartoons rather than those from other countries. Keywords: Local identity, Characteristic, Animation, Comic, Character design. Introduction Cartoons are fundamentally known as entertainment for kids. But due to cultural values, technological development and education, our cliché perception has changed to that cartoons are actually a source of effective communication for all ages (Muliyadi, 2001, 2010, 2015).

MSN Entertainment Guide to the 2004 Academy Awards http://entertainment.msn.com/netcal/?netcal=833 Wake Us When It's Over... The highs, lows and snores of the 76th Academy Awards show By Kat Giantis MSN Entertainment Charlize Theron didn't get the same smooch from Adrien Brody that Halle Berry did last year Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Is it over yet? Despite a triumphant night for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," the 76th annual Academy Awards are sure to go down as one of the most boring ceremonies in recent history. To borrow a line from host Billy Crystal, it was "a weapon of mass sleep induction." It's a shame, too, since this year's Oscars had all the makings of a night to remember, with "Rings" sweeping every category in which it was nominated and tying "Titanic" and "Ben-Hur" with a record 11 statues. Instead, it was a butt-numbing three-and-a-half-hour snoozefest that featured no major upsets, laundry-list acceptance speeches that included nearly every person in New Zealand, tedious presentations, blah fashions and lackluster jokes. And did we mention it was boring? We would have given anything for a moment of unpredictability -- an Uma-Oprah catfight, a Tom and Nicole reunion, even Renee Zellweger tripping over that big-ass bustle on her dress and stumbling down the stairs. Alas, it was not to be. But while the show may have been weapons-grade dull, it still had its share of highs and lows, if you managed to stay awake for 'em.

FRO M THE PRE S DEN T (j , e"':'onest, we were a little worried about whether ~ '" moving the Academy Awards ceremony three weeks earlier than usual would even be doable. We were worried about getting the ballots out to the membership and back in time. We were worried about finding time for the nomina tions screenings in the Foreign Language, Short Film and Documentary categories. We were worried about pulling a show together in a shorter period between the nominations announcement and the telecast. About building tune-in interest over a shorter period of weeks. About dozens of other items that we'd become used to doing in a more leisurely time frame. It turned out it was doable. And we did it. Afterwards, we even wondered how we'd ever managed to stretch it out for three more weeks. It turned out also that the shorter schedule is having a material impact on the studios' release pattern. PiCUlfes may not be all bunched up at the end of this year, but spread a little more evenly over the next eight or nine months. That alone, I'd say, may be a result worth the effort. Some of us wanted to try doing it even earlier. I was one of those. But the prevailing wisdom was to get at least another year under our belts. So we'll present the Awards at the end of February again next year. February 27th is the day. • A Review of the Malaysian Film Industry: Towards Better Film Workflow
A REVIEW OF THE MALAYSIAN FILM INDUSTRY: TOWARDS BETTER FILM WORKFLOW ABDUL RIEZAL DIM A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education University of the West of England, Bristol September 2016 ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the existing film workflow processes in Malaysia and aims to explore, review and reflect on the expectations, experiences, preferences and problems experienced by practitioners. In-depth examination of real practices of colour film workflow, investigating the common myth among Malaysian filmmakers that environmental colour temperature affects the image quality of Malaysian films. Analysis of this myth may help to establish why many Malaysian films have been processed through foreign laboratory. Evidences from film industry were recorded through qualitative video documentation, alongside quantitative data from filmstrip test. This mixed action research method forms the main approach collectively with participatory action research as a tool to narrate the development of the research. In justifying the data, an explanatory mixed method design has been applied.
