  • The Romford Pelé
the romford pelé Reviewed by Philip Wedge, University of Kansas 9 february 2017 archive In his autobiography, The Romford Pelé, Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour, with the assistance of Invincible author Amy Lawrence, gives an interesting inside view of life at the Arsenal football club under two of the three legendary Arsenal managers, George Graham and Arsene Wenger (the third being Herbert Chapman, of course). Having appeared in more matches than any other Arsenal player in the Premier League era (12th all-time for the club in all matches) and having played on championship sides for both managers—including Wenger's Invincible squad of 2003-04—Parlour bridges nicely the era between the ending of Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch (1992) and Lawrence's own Invincible. In his forward to Parlour's book, Arsene Wenger emphasizes the qualities that kept Parlour in his squads as attacking players such as Overmars, Pires and Henry joined the Gunners, for Ray "was a train who could go at a certain pace—not electric but he could maintain high energy for the whole game" (xi). When Arsenal had the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, and Ljungberg scoring brilliant goals, Parlour could be overlooked, as in the FA Cup Final in 2002 against Chelsea, when Fanzone commentator and Chelsea fan Tim Lovejoy famously commented, "He's put him through. Oh, it's all right. It's only Ray Parlour" (xiii) just as Parlour uncorks one of his career- best strikes to put Arsenal ahead. As Parlour describes, Marcel Desailly turned his back a bit, he didn't dive at me or tackle me.

  • Ray Parlour Former England and Arsenal Football Player
Ray Parlour Former England and Arsenal Football player Ray Parlour is a genuine and very likeable man. He’s great company and has a lot of stories and experiences to share. After joining as a trainee, Ray spent 14 years at Arsenal, making 468 appearances enjoying fantastic success. During his time at the Gunners he won the league cup, three league titles and two FA Cups (including scoring a spectacular winning goal against Chelsea in the 2002 FA Cup Final) as well as playing in the Champions League and Uefa Cup. It was in the Euro 2000 qualifier against Poland in 1999 that he made his England debut. He went on to win 10 caps for his country Dubbed the ‘Romford Pelé', Ray broke into the Arsenal side managed by George Graham in January 1992. An industrious and hard working player, he improved match by match and when Arsene Wenger arrived in September 1996 he flourished. With his footballing brain, skill and tackling ability he gave the Arsenal midfield a quality balance. Playing alongside the likes of Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp no doubt helped. Ray left Highbury on a high note in the summer of 2004 shortly after Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ had completed an unbeaten title campaign. He signed for Middlesbrough and remained there for two and half years until 2007 when he joined Hull City for a short period before retiring. A natural communicator and storyteller, on hanging up his boots Ray smoothly moved into the media world. He hosts a show on talkSPORT as well as being a contributor on other media outlets here and abroad.

And then you are a footballer, and you’re suddenly in the strangest, most baffling world of all. A world where one team-mate comes to training in a bright red suit with matching top-hat, cane and glasses, without any actual glass in them, and another has so many sports cars they forget they have left a Porsche at the train station. Even when their surname is incorporated in the registration plate. So walk with me into the dressing-room, to find out which players refuse to touch a football before a game, to discover why a load of millionaires never have any shower-gel, and to hear what Cristiano Ronaldo says when he looks at himself in the mirror. ABOUT THE AUTHOR First things first: yes I am very tall, no the weather isn’t different up here, and no I don’t play basketball. Glad that’s out the way. I’ve been a professional footballer for 20 years, have 42 England caps, have scored over 100 Premier League goals and hold the record for the most headed goals in Premier League history. I’ve been at a fair few clubs too, including Queens Park Rangers, Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Norwich, Southampton, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur, Stoke and England.
