EARDISLEY

EARDISLEY is a considerable parish and village, with a station on the , Hay and section of the London, Midland and Scottish railway; it is bounded on the south by the Wye, 14½ miles west-north- west from Hereford, 5 south-east from Kington, 8 north-east from Hay and 157½ from London, in the division of the county, Huntington hundred, Kington rural district, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Weobley and archdeaconry and . The church of St. Mary Magdalen is a building of stone of the 12th and 14th centuries, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles and an embattled tower at the north-west angle containing a clock and 6 bells: the tower dates only from the year 1710; the old tower is supposed to have been destroyed by fire early in the 18th century; the bells were rehung in 1883: there is a beautifully carved 12th century stone font, which, considering its age, is one of the finest in the country: the oak cover was carved by Dr. Q. R. Darling from the oak of the forest: the organ was presented about 1860 by Maj.-Gen. Sir John Coke K.C.B. : the stained east window was presented by Mrs. Perry-Herrick in 1879, and there are others to Mrs. F. S. Coke and Mrs. Charles Palmer: in 1923 a baptistery window, credence table and altar rails were erected to the memory of Canon Palmer, rector here for 40 years: an oak tablet bears the names of the incumbents dating from 1280: the church was restored in 1862-3, at the expense of William Perry-Herrick esq.: in 1862 a Lych gate was erected as a memorial to the Rev. Henry Clelan, vicar 1859-62. In the churchyard is a cross erected in memory of the men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18; a bronze tablet in the church bears their names. The register dates from the year 1628. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £600, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of W. M. Curzon-Herrick Esq. and held since 1922 by the Rev. Sydney Herbert Osborne L.Th. of Hatfield Hall. Durham. There is a Methodist chapel, erected 1867, and at the Great Oak a Calvinistic Methodist chapel erected 1848. The Curzon-Herrick Hall and Men's Club, with reading room was established in 1877. The Brilley charity of about £17 10s. yearly is distributed to the poor of the parish not in receipt of parish relief. There are traces of a Roman encampment in the northern part of the parish and on Eardisley Common is a remarkably fine oak tree. There was once a castle here. The moat and embankments of which may still be seen. Two mediaeval helmets belonging to the Baskerville family were unearthed here, and are now in the church. The land is mainly owned by the farmers. Electricity is available. The soil is chiefly loamy; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 4,560 acres of land and 6 of water; population in 1931, 690 in the , and of the ecclesiastical parish (which includes parts of Willersley), 600.

At BOLLINGHAM, 2½ miles north, is a chapel of ease, a small but beautiful and ancient building of the 12th century, restored in 1867 and 1890 and again completely restored in 1939 by H. P. Williams Esq. at a cost of £180. It consists of small chancel, nave, south porch and a western bell gable with one bell: there are two stained windows. In 1939 H. P. Williams esq. formerly of Bollingham, left about £250 to be invested for the upkeep of Bollingham church, and also for the sick and needy of the parish.

Upper Spond is a hamlet, 2½ miles north. Lower Welson is a hamlet, 1 mile west-north-west. Woodseaves is a hamlet, 1½ miles west. Willersley is 1 mile south.
