4 2004 Northern Michigan University Women’s Volleyball Media Guide HEAD COACH JIM MOORE

They say things are always better the second time around. Well, if that is true then Northern Michigan volleyball is in for one heck of a ride. If, Moore’s first year back at the helm is any indication then the ‘Cats are on the right track. He led the ‘Cats to a 26-1 overall record last season, a perfect 18-0 mark in the GLIAC and the team captured the GLIAC Volleyball Tour- nament title. Moore also picked up GLIAC Coach of the Year and the AVCA Regional Coach of the Year honors. His record at NMU now stands at 149-56 (.727). On December 30, 2002, then interim Athletic Director Ken Godfrey announced to the Marquette community and the Northern Michigan family that Jim Moore was coming back for his second stint as a Wildcat. From his first championship beginnings at Northern Michigan (1989-93), to a three-year stint at Kansas State (1994-96), then onto a four-year term at the University of (1996-00) and a quick stop at Chico State (2000-02), Moore has shown the ability to build and maintain a national-caliber program at all levels. Moore owns a career record of 328-149 (.687), and, with the excep- tion of one season, his teams had accomplished the amazing feat of improv- ing upon their prior season’s winning percentage in each of his 15 seasons. He has had to face many obstacles at each stop, beginning with his first season at Northern Michigan in 1989. Although, he was faced with numer- ous recruiting challenges, his five-year tenure culminated in the Wildcats winning the 1993 NCAA II National Championship. In addition, his program produced the first two-time Division II National Player of the Year in collegiate history. He then moved onto Manhattan, Kan., in 1994 where he took over a Kansas State program that was at the bottom of the Big 8 the previous three seasons. By the time he left the Little Apple, K-State had become one of the best in the Big 12 and it was loaded with numerous all-conference caliber players. Following these efforts, Moore was named the sixth head

coach in the history of the University of Texas-Austin volleyball program in March of 1997, a mere four months before training for the 1997 season. Although, he did not face the same immediate challenges at Texas as he has in the prior stops, he did have to replace a hall of fame coach and keep a storied program at the top. Shortly after taking over the UT program Moore was asked to be Mick Haley’s top assistant for the women’s U.S. National Team. Moore was honored by the offer, but preferred to stay in the college ranks. Undaunted, Haley sought out Moore to be a consultant for the U.S. Olympic Team and help introduce his style of offense to the national team program. Following his run at Texas, Moore returned to the Division II coaching ranks at California State University, Chico. As is Moore’s fashion of improving ailing programs, he guided the Chico State program to its’ first winning season in five years culminating in a second year record of 18-8, just missing the NCAA Tournament. Moore’s coaching career began in 1989 at Northern Michigan Univer- sity. In just five seasons, Moore raised a perennial sub-.500 team to national dominance, highlighted by three consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament quarterfinals, back-to-back appearances in the national championship match, and finally the 1993 National Championship which culminated in a phenomenal record of 38-1. His athletes reeled in numerous individual honors, including an unprec- edented four First Team All-Americans and the NCAA Division II Player of the Year in 1992 alone. Moore followed that with three more All-America selections and the first ever repeat Division II Player of the Year in 1993. For his achievements, Moore won the 1993 National Coach of the Year Award, three AVCA/ Tachikara Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year awards and two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Coach of the Year Awards. Moore then moved on to Manhattan, Kan. where he revitalized the now successful K-State program. The Wildcats had gone 24-68 overall and 0-36 in league play prior to his arrival. During his stay, KSU registered three straight winning seasons, including a 26-9 mark in 1996 and the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Following the run at K-State, Moore guided the storied UT program to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, a Big 12 Conference Championship, one Big 12 Player of the Year, seven All-American selections and eight All-Big 12 selections. While at Chico State he resurrected a program that had gone 15-75 in the last three years. Moore lead the Wild- cats to 16-13 season his first year and an 18-8 finish his second. His players where awarded four all- CCHA selec- tions. A native of Long Beach, Calif., Moore played volleyball for two years at San Bernardino Valley College followed by a two-year stint at Long Beach State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree (1980) and later his master’s degree in health science. His first coaching position came in the high school ranks at California’s Rim of the World High School where his teams went 134-27 (.832) in five seasons as his team in 1981 captured the California State Division II championship. He then spent four years at Mayfair High (Calif.), as his last two teams went 26-2 and 28-2 respec- tively, before moving to Northern Michigan. Moore and his wife, Stacy Metro, have two children: Matthew Ryan, born in April of 1997, and Michael Reed, born in October of 1998.

6 2004 Northern Michigan University Women’s Volleyball Media Guide ASSISTANT COACH STACY METRO

Stacy Metro, returns for her second season as the assistant coach, to the site where she turned Division II volleyball eyes to the eastern time zone and to the Upper Peninsula of Michi- gan when she led the Northern Michigan University Wildcats to many first with it’s 1993 NCAA II National Championship. The first NCAA women’s volleyball team to win a national champi- onship in the eastern time zone. The first women’s team to win a national championship at NMU and the first NCAA National Championship hosted by Northern Michigan University and held in Marquette. Metro guided a team that had a losing record the three years prior to her arrival to a record of 99-14 in the three years she was running the offense for the Wildcats. Every year she was the quarterback the team was in the Elite Eight which started a run of seven straight appearances for NMU. That is only the tip of the ice berg. Her senior year she led the country in attack percentage with .510 while leading the nation in assists per game with 12.37. She is still second at NMU in career blocks per game behind teammate Andrea Gommans as a non-middle blocker and led the conference and country in several statistical categories throughout her three-year tenure. Metro was all-tournament in every tournament she played in throughout her career and was MVP in everyone but three of the 16 she played in. She is quite arguably the most decorated volleyball player in NCAA Division II history. She was the first two-time AVCA National Player of the Year. To be followed by her teammate Liu June who repeated the honor. Metro was three-time First Team All-America, GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1993 and the recipient of the 1993-94 Honda Award winner as the National Athlete of the year for NCAA Division II. Metro was the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Player of the Year in both 1992 and 1993 and was selected All- Conference in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The First Team All-American awards occurred in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Her jersey was retired from Northern Michigan University in a ceremony in 1994. Fellow Honda award winners in 1993 were Mia Ham, Lisa Leslie, two time Olympic Volleyball Player Daniel Scott along with others. Immediately after winning her awards, Metro joined the USA National Team prior to the 1996 Olympics. Metro trained in San Diego at the end of 1993 and joined up with the USA Team again in 1994 after playing profes- sionally in Peru early in 1994. It was at that time she chose to use her skills as a player and focus on coaching. She joined Jim Moore at Kansas State University (KSU) as the first assistant where she was able to resurrect her second program. Taking over a team that had lost 36 straight conference matches and turning them around in a three-year period of time making it into the second round of the NCAA Division I Playoffs and into the Top 25 in 1996. The K-State team had a winning record all three years of Metro’s tenure and was able to take an unrecruited setter and help turn her into an All Big 12 setter. Metro also was the recruiting coordinator at K-State recruiting it’s first “Fab 50” player and it’s first and only All-American. After the 1996 season Stacy took four years off to start her family and begin rasing hers and head coach Jim Moore’s children, Matthew and Michael. Coaching stayed in her blood. She started, administered and coach the Club Austin Volleyball club at that time. With four years out of college coaching she returned with the same success of turning programs around she had before. Again, with head coach Moore she returned as the first assistant at California State University Chico and took over a team that had come in last in it’s conference every year it was in it’s current conference. In a two-year period Metro helped turn Chico State around with two consecutive winning seasons and in contention for the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The native of Lakewood, Calif. where she is in the Lakewood Sports Hall of Fame graduated from Mayfair High School. Metro will be inducted into the NMU Sports Hall of Fame during Homecoming activites in October. Began her playing career for The University of Colorado Buffalos coming to NMU in 1990. She graduated with a degree in marketing in 1994 while on the Dean’s List.

2003 Northern Michigan University Women’s Volleyball Media Guide 47 THE HOME OF THE WILDCATS

The home court for the NMU women’s volleyball team is Vandament Arena, one of the finest volleyball-only facilities in the nation. The facility, originally named the NMU Volleyball Arena, was opened prior to the 1995 season. Before that, the volleyball team used Hedgcock Fieldhouse as its home court and Dr. William E. Vandament shared the facility with the NMU men’s and women’s basketball teams. Vandament Arena was officially dedicated on Novem- ber 9, 1997, and is named after Dr. William E. Vandament, who served as NMU President from 1991-97. Vandament, an avid supporter of the Wildcat volleyball team, was in office when the Wildcats won their national championships in 1993 and 1994. He retired in the summer of 1997. The 1,500-seat arena features retractable bleachers on each side of the main court. When not used for volleyball matches, Vandament Arena has three basketball/volleyball courts for student use. In addition, the facility has a scoreboard on each end of the main court. Since moving to the facility in 1995, the Wildcats have posted a 101-15 record for a winning percentage of .870. Included in that total is part of a school-record 66-match home court winning streak, and part of a conference record 80-match string of home wins. Along with Vandament Arena, the volleyball team received a new locker room, which is located just outside the arena. The locker room features a team room and a locker room, which has individualized wood lockers for each player, as well as a shower area. The team room contains a computer as well as a big-screen television, which is used to break down opponent video and go over scouting reports prior to matches. Vandament Arena is located inside NMU’s Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF). The PEIF also houses a two-level Recreation Center, complete with climbing wall, weight room, cardiovascular area, two basketball courts, a tennis court, lounge areas, and a conference room; an eight-lane swimming pool with a diving tank; seven racquetball courts; a dance studio; athletic training facilities; locker rooms; classrooms; and staff offices. 2004 Northern Michigan University Women’s Volleyball Media Guide 49 ABOUTABOUT NMUNMU

Awesome Facilities Northern Michigan University boasts one of the finest collections of athletic facilities in NCAA II, if not the country. A connected unit of three first-rate facilities, the , the Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF), that houses the Vandament Arena, and the Berry Events Center are used by NMU for the majority of its athletic events. Vandament Arena The Vandament Arena is a volleyball-only facility, one of the finest in NCAA II, and is located inside NMU’s PEIF. The arena, which is named for former NMU President William E. Vandament (1991-97), opened in 1995 and was officially dedicated in 1997. Vandament, an avid supporter of the Wildcat volleyball team, was Northern’s president when the Wildcats won their national championships in 1993 and 1994. Since 1995, the Wildcats have posted a 112-16 record for a winning percentage of .875. Included in that total is part of a school-record 66-match home court winning streak, and part of a conference record 80-match string of home wins. The 1,500-seat arena features retractable bleachers on each side of the main court. When not used for volleyball matches, Vandament Arena has three basketball/volleyball courts for student use. The volleyball team uses a new locker room, located adjacent to the arena. It features individualized wood lockers for each player. The team room contains a computer and a big-screen television, which the players use to break down opponent video and go over scouting reports prior to matches.

Physical Education Instructional Facility (PEIF) The PEIF, as it is more commonly called, houses the PEIF Pool, home to the NMU swimming and diving team, and Vandament Arena. Opened in 1999, the two-level recreation center a new rock climbing wall, weight room, cardiovascular area, two basketball courts, seven racquetball courts, a tennis court, dance studio, aerobics areas, and several lounge areas. The PEIF Pool is eight lanes and has a diving tank with one- and three-meter springboards, and a 20-meter platform. The facility also houses an auxiliary gymnasium, which the Wildcat men’s and women’s basketball teams use for practice. Berry Events Center The Berry Events Center is a multifunctional venue and NMU’s newest athletic facility, which is home of the Wildcat hockey, basketball and United States speedskating teams. The hockey players and speedskaters compete on an Olympic-size ice sheet measuring 200 by 100 feet. Northern is one of two schools, Alaska Fairbanks being the other, in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with the larger ice sheet. The basketball team plays on protective flooring, placed over the ice in a process that takes about five hours. During a basketball game seating for 500 fans is available courtside, while the entire seating capacity of the facility is 3,800. The Berry Events Center is named after John W. Berry Jr., a 1971 NMU graduate, who donated $2 to the project. It was opened in 1999. In addition to the main arena, the facility includes a weight room, athletic training room, meeting rooms, numerous locker rooms, a multi- level press area, and a support area. The BEC is also designed to host concerts and community events, and is equipped with moveable theatrical rigging and lighting. Superior Dome The Superior Dome is the world’s largest wooden dome. It has been the home to NMU’s football team since 1991, and is considered one of the finest football facility in the Great Lakes Intercolle- giate Athletic Conference. The Dome stands 14 stories high, encompasses 5.1 acres under its roof and has a permanent seating capacity of 8,000, but the building can hold as many as 16,000 people. A retractable artificial turf carpet, the largest of its kind in the world, can accommodate a football, soccer, and field hockey game. Underneath the carpet is a synthetic playing surface that features three basketball/volleyball courts, two tennis courts, and a 200-meter track. The dome also holds locker rooms, department offices, meeting rooms, concession areas, and a retail store. The Superior Dome is also used for the Michigan High School Athletic Association football regular season and playoff games, trade shows, conventions, conferences, banquets, high school track meets, Special Olympics, and NMU’s commencement exercises.

Soccer Field In August 2002, the unused plot of university land located behind the Superior Dome was trans- formed into four fields that span 80 yards wide and 120 yards long. Two are now home to the NMU women’s soccer team; the other two are reserved as practice fields for the NMU football team. Bleachers and a new scoreboard, a gift to the university from the Pepsi Corporation, completes the facility’s set up.

Cross Country Skiing Northern’s men’s and women’s cross country ski teams have two designated practice locations. To make the most of a winter evening, both practice sites have lighted trails. One site is at the Al Quaal Ski trails in nearby Ishpeming. There are three, five kilometer trails that are extremely well designed and maintained for NMU’s competitive collegiate events. For easier trails or less strenuous practice days, the teams ski at Blueberry Ridge Ski trails in Sands Township, an area just outside Marquette. This practice site has four major loops that measure five kilometers each. Golf The official golf course of the Northern Michigan Wildcats is the Wawanowin Country Club in Ishpeming. This 6,487 yard golf course has a three-star rating from Golf Digest for the golf courses in the Upper Peninsula. Wawanowin provides 18 holes of challenging play, two practice greens and a driving range.
