Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

One important foundation for the conservation of biodiversity on islands is an inventory of endemic species. In the absence of a comprehensive inventory, conservation effort often defaults to a focus on the better-known and more conspicuous species (typically mammals and birds). Although this component of island biota often needs such conservation attention, such focus may mean that less conspicuous endemic species (especially invertebrates) are neglected and suffer high rates of loss. In this paper, we review the available literature and online resources to compile a list of endemic species that is as comprehensive as possible for the 137 km2 oceanic Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the north-eastern Indian Ocean. -

Larva (Noctua /Bombyx Festiva , Don n 2) found on the Crinum - 16 April 1840. Length 2 1/2 Incs. Ground color ^ very light blue, with numerous dark longitudinal stripes. 3 bright yellow bands, one on each side and one down the middle back - Head lightish red - a black velvet band, transverse, on the segment behind the front legs - but broken by the yellows This larva had a very offensive smell, and its habits were disgusting - living in the stem or in the thick part of the leaves near it, in considerable numbers, & surrounded by their accumulated filth - so that any touch of the Larva would soil the fingers.- It chiefly eat the thicker & juicier parts of the Crinum - On the 17 April made a very slight nest, underground, & some amongst the filth & leaves, by forming a cavity with agglutinated earth - This larva is showy - Drawing of exact size & appearance. -

Some years earlier KIRIAKOFF (1977) published a systematic monography of the Palaearctic and Oriental Agaristinae. It is clearly different from all other Vitessa-species with its size and markings and shows clear differences to all the known species in this genus; also the DNA Barcode is distinctive. Zusammenfassung Die neue Art Vitessa ingae sp. n. aus Sulawesi wird beschrieben und mit ähnlichen Arten verglichen. Sie unterscheidet sich deutlich von allen anderen Vitessa-Arten durch ihre Größe und unterschiedliche Zeichnung. Ebenso zeigt der DNA Barcode deutliche Unterschiede zu den bisher bekannten Arten dieser Gattung. 333 © Entomofauna Ansfelden/Austria; download unter www.zobodat.at Key words: Lepidoptera, Pyralidae, Vitessa ingae sp. n., Indonesia, Sulawesi, DNA Barcode, COI-5P Introduction Only three species and a few subspecies of the genus Vitessa MOORE, [1860] are recorded from Sulawesi (Vitessa hollandi wallacealis MUNROE & SHAFFER, 1980, V. pyraliata latialbata MUNROE & SHAFFER, 1980, V. pyraliata pyraliata Walker, 1864 and V. kolakalis MUNROE & SHAFFER, 1980). This genus only occurs in Southeast Asia from Southeast China, Indo-China region (Thailand, Burma, Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia) via Malaysia, Indonesian Islands, New Guinea to Australia with 29 species (MUNROE & SHAFFER 1980, BUCHSBAUM 2000, 2002). Most of the species are rare. The specimens fly in the night and come to the light. Sulawesi is in the zoogeographic interregion of Wallacea (ILLIES 1971, REICHHOLF 2003, SEDLAG 1984, 1995, WALLACE 1869, WHITMORE 1987, WHITTEN et al. -
How Are Moths and Butterflies Different?
Fact Sheet 1: How are moths and butterflies different? Butterflies are part of the Order Lepidoptera, latin for “scale wing” which refers to the beautiful feathery scales which coat their wings giving them colours and patterns. Lepidoptera also includes the moths, and it can be hard at times to work out how to tell moths and butterflies apart. This fact sheet will show you some simple guidelines (and more complicated points of biology) that help, but there are exceptions as well that can be confusing. Clubbed vs. fuzzy antennae One of the most reliable features that can help tell a butterfly from a moth is their antennae. Most butterflies have long thin antennae with a kink or bulb/club shape at the end, while many (but not all) moths have feathery or fuzzy antennae. However this doesn’t always work, as you can see with this Joseph’s Coat Moth (Agarista agricola) that its antennae are neither fuzzy nor feathery. Flying at night or in the day? Most butterflies fly during the day, and most moths fly at night. However there are many day-flying moths, and a small number of butterflies that fly at night so be aware that this isn’t always a great feature to use. For example, the Eastern Dusk-flat (Chaetocneme beata) pictured to the left is a butterfly that mostly flies in the early morning and late afternoon, but also flies at night. -

Here we present molecular and morphological evidence showing that Cartaletis dargei only superficially resembles true Cartaletis Warren, 1894 (the relative name currently considered a junior synonym of Aletis Hübner, 1820), which are unpalatable diurnal moths superficially resembling butterflies, and that it is misplaced in the family Geometridae. We transfer it to Noctuidae: Agaristinae, and combine it with the genus Aletopus Jordan, 1926, from Tanzania, as Aletopus dargei Submitted 16 March 2021 (Herbulot, 2003) (new combination). Two new species, Ophiusa pseudotirhaca Singh & Ranjan, sp. nov. and Rusicada pindraberensis Singh & Ranjan, sp. nov. are described and one species, Pericyma cruegeri (Butler, 1886) is reported for the first time from India. This is an addition of about 17% of moths to the already recorded 138 species from Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.
