Dear Friends, Seems to have been a long time since I last wrote this letter. It's really hot outside in more ways than one. One wonders if the current heatwave is due to the Global Warming that we've been hearing so much about or if it's just one of those terrible "furnaces" that we suffer every now and then. Whatever the reason I certainly hope that it's causing many of you to plan your next "escape." Maybe a nice cruise to Alaska!! I! Doesn't that sound nice and refreshing and believe me not that expensive. I've long given up the practice of quoting attractive prices to various destinations as I am sure you will all agree that the one commodity that really hasn't increased in price is travel. So all that it really takes is the decision to where the budget will allow you to go. Actually the prices to South Africa have really come down this July/ August with a great two for one deal $1298 for a couple. Pity to miss such an opportunity. As mentioned in my last letter, our office arranges the very popular Brenda Miller music tours to Europe. The last few months we've had great tours returning from Russia and Paris with people raving that they enjoyed the experience of a lifetime. We are planning a new tour to Russia in September, so please call Tammy or Ilanit in our office for f u l l d e t a i l s . I wish you all a pleasant summer.

Best Regards,

Terry Kessel Managing Director CONTENTS BACK TO THE FUTURE

A flame has been extinguished with the passing of Rachiel Rapoport. An icon in the Zionist movement, Rachiel was president of the South African Women's Zionist Coun cil (WZC) from 1977-81, and an honorary life member of the World WIZO Executive. Rachiel was born into a Zionist Chassidic family and grew up in Wilkomer, where .she belonged to Hashomer Hatzair, and was chair of Keren Kayemet. At age 19, she left Rachiel Rapaporil Lithuania for Port Elizabeth. There she taught nursery school, and married Solomon Rapoport. The couple moved to Johannesburg where Rachiel became chair of the women's groups of the Histadrut Ivrii, and chair of the three branches of the Women's Zionist League all at the same time. She was a soldier in WZC, travelling by bus and tram to meetings exhorting women to join at every opportunity. In her travels for WZC, there wasn't a comer in South Africa, Zimbabwe or Na mibia where she hadn't been. She fulfilled her life's dream last year by coming on aliyah.

Fay Drus, one or our most ardent volunteers in all aspects of charitable work in Netanya, passed away recently. For many years she was catering convenor at the South African Federa tion, Wingale Bowling club and at the Maon Nachim, an organisation for handicapped adults. To know Fay was to love and befriend her and she was always ready to assist whenever and wherever she was called upon to do so. She was a valuable member of Telfed Netanya, having been secretary, treasurer and "friend in need". She will be sorely missed by all. We will never forget you Faigele. — Orkie Chesed ov Cecil Cooper, a businessman, a sportsman, a Zionist and a family man, recently passed away. Prior to making aliyah in 1972, he had been General Secretary of the South African Zionist Federation from 1969-1972. He excelled in sports, soccer, cricket, golf, and in later years as a bowler in Israel. He represented Israel at four successive Maccabi Games. His business life in Israel was diversified and included being a partner in the first franchise owned store of the Burger Ranch chain. He leaves his wife, Rhoda, Cecil Cooper \ married sons, and nine grandchildren, all living in Israel.
