President's Message May 20, 2014

Welcome back to our usual Tuesday program with a beautiful view of the white caps on the ocean, a delicious lunch, and as noted by our Secretary and incoming President Marc, “a full house of members and guests”. Who knew that JT was such a draw for his incomparable invocation…I’ll never look at a Cheerio, American cereal, or rocky hilltop quite the same! With a quick flag salute we were onto our musical lesson for the week; how well do you know the tune “” by Paul Vance and ? Thanks to Del’s leadership and song writing, the message trumped the music!

We had several happy bucks (Marc is glad to have his daughter gainfully employed and off the family insurance policy!), several of us noted Joan Russell Price’s induction into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table (Go Joan!), and we learned a bit more about Harlan’s involvement with CASA Magazine; maybe Harlan can get our Club “written up” for one of our community programs?

Bill gave us an ABC of Rotary on what the “Classification Principle” is about, Lynda continued to shine as Membership Chair (even in abstention!), which brought us to the serious matter of “ratification”. Murray and the Nomination Committee, with unanimous support of the Club Board, sought and received a unanimous vote of approval for Joseph Kirkland as our President Elect Nominee for service as President in the Rotary Year 2015-2016. Joe will serve as Secretary for the Rotary Year 2014-2015 before succeeding Marc Fleischman as President. Well done and thank you Joe for your commitment to our Club! This followed by an announcement of Joe’s successor as Treasurer of the Club, a man of financial astute, Conner Rehage. Very much appreciate the engagement and dedication to our Club. Thank you!

We managed to celebrate Jerry’s birthday, remind folks of the upcoming Dodger Day on Sunday, June 15 (details in this AXIS), wish Marc safe travels on his way to Sydney for the Rotary International Convention, and discuss the upcoming Done in a Day Project at the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens on Saturday morning, May 31 (please check in with Mark).

That left us with a few minutes to thank the Golf Classic Tournament Team including Carolyn, Bill, Mark, Robert, Aaron, and Seth… and a cast of thousands! This year set a number of records for raffle tickets sold (over $4,000), number of foursomes (18), temperature at the first tee (98 degrees F), number of sponsors (8+), number of tee sponsors (more than 18), and low score (58 by Kurt and his “buddies”). Throw in a great silent and live auction (Mark’s second or third career) with mega buckets of wine and the Club is looking to net over $15,000 for support of our numerous activities in the community and beyond. We have a few pictures from the event (and are looking for more!) included in this edition of AXIS! Thank you!

Onward to our program, a sobering discussion on a tragic aspect of our society and an optimistic manner with which we can deal with gun violence. Introduced by James, Toni Wellen, Executive Director of the local Coalition Against Gun Violence gave us all reason to pause with the startling statistics on gun violence in our nation. The Coalition Against Gun Violence was "founded in 1994 upon the belief that by working together to combat gun violence through education and advocacy, we can create a safer community”. Who knew there is almost a gun per person in the ; that’s a lot of fire power. The impact is tragic in ordinary lives but especially when it impacts children. There is a high cost of gun violence James, Speaker Toni Wellen and Toni outlined this along with various solutions, like the gun buyback program coming up in and John Santa Barbara on June 14. Guns are a polarizing issue in our society, whether that be political, the culture of violence, dealing with the mentally unstable, and constitutional “rights”. That said, Toni presented a valid case for being a responsible gun owner and working to reduce the tragedy that occurs daily in our country. Please join us next week for a visit from past DG Jane McClenahan (and wife of current DG Jack) on the topic of GOCARE, a Rotary project in Nicaragua.

Good Times Doing Good!

Sidebar: “Catch a Falling Star”, written by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss ’s hit version was released in 1957 It was his last #1 hit, reaching #1 on the Billboard “Most Played by Jockeys” and #2 in the overall top 100. It was the first single to receive a gold record certification, on March 14, 1958. The single won Como the 1959 Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, male. It is featured in many films, including The Princess Diaries, Love Actually, Everybody’s Fine and Never Been Kissed. Its melody is based on a theme from Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture. Lyrics:

Pick your fallen golf‐ball, Pick your fallen golf‐ball Hide in your pocket, Hide in your pocket Put it in a better lay. Put it in a better lay.

Find your fallen golf‐ball, Find your fallen golf ball, Kick it gently closer, So ‐ When the others look away. Kick it gently closer, When the others look away… Your score became a smaller number, But When the others look away… Golf’s only a game… When the others look away… So who cares ‘bout That extra help you needed They’re doing the same…

Geo Query of the Day: What is the wettest place on earth? mes Answer: Mount Wai'ale'ale on the island of Kaua'i in the Hawaiian Islands (correctly guessed by our roving

Hawaiian, Lew Stone!). Mount Waiʻaleʻale, often spelled Waialeale in English without the ʻokina, is a shield mes volcano and the second highest point on the island of Kauaʻi in the Hawaiian Islands. Its name literally means "rippling water" or "overflowing water" (Pukui, Elbert & Mookini 1974: 220). The mountain, at an elevation of 5,148 feet (1,569 m), averages more than 452 inches (11,500 mm) of rain a year since 1912, with a record 683 inches (17,300 mm) in 1982; its summit is one of the rainiest spots on earth. Recent reports though mention that over the period 1978–2007 the wettest spot in Hawaii is Big Bog on Maui (404 inches or 10,300 mm per year). District 5240 Montecito rotary club axIS MAY 20, 2014

Rich Abbott is known for very consistent habits including his morning coffee at the Coffee Bean on Coast Village Road. What better place to surprise Rich with a celebration of his 79th Birthday than with friends, carrot cake (for improved eyesight!), coffee, and a rendition of "Happy Birthday" by James' daughters (now gone viral on YouTube!). Joining members of our Club were the Montecito Tennis Mafia and various other acquaintances of Rich... a man with many friends in this town. Happy Birthday!

District 5240 Montecito rotary club axIS MAY 20, 2014 President’s Message May 2014

Dear Fellow Rotarians, I've had a unique opportunity to be a part of the polio eradication campaign from its very beginnings, more than a quarter century ago, to where we are now, which is truly "this close" to the end.

None of us knew back then how long eradication would take, or how many obstacles we'd meet along the way. I'm not sure how we would have felt about taking on the challenge if we had known. But there is one thing I know for sure: that every single day of the last 29 years has been worth it, because over those years, we have saved millions of children from being paralyzed by Ron D. Burton polio. There's no way to put a price tag on that. And today, we are closer than ever to a world in which no child will be paralyzed, ever again.

It's been a long race to the finish line. That line is now in sight. But we'll only cross it if we keep moving forward. And the only way to do that is with the help of every single Rotarian, everywhere in the world.

The first thing we need is your voice, and your advocacy. Think ahead to World Polio Day, on 24 October: What can your club and districts do to raise awareness? Write letters to your elected officials, hold a purple pinkie fundraiser, plan an event with a local school. If you or someone you know has a story to tell about polio, share it at www.endpolionow.org/stories. The most important thing is to keep the momentum going. Let your community, and the world, know that the fight against polio is at its most critical stage yet.

I'm glad to report that the End Polio Now – Make History Today campaign is going well. Rotary met the terms of the new agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and received US$70 million in matching funds in January, which will be fully committed in this calendar year. We have four more years of this agreement remaining, during which the Gates Foundation will match two-to- one every dollar Rotary spends on polio, to a maximum of $35 million per year. I encourage all of you to do what you can to help us make the most of this opportunity. I know that together, we can engage Rotary to end polio – and change the world, forever.

Ron D. Burton President, Rotary International
