New Dances Edition 2018 Welcome to the 2018 Edition of New Dances at Juilliard During my first few months as the newly appointed Director of Dance, I have witnessed some of the finest young dancers deep in practice in the studio and in the classroom. Guided by our extraordinary faculty, they strive to refine the technical and presentational aspects of the art form, day by day. This type of rigor fortifies the dancer as an artist, capable of expressing an infinite possibility of emotions and ideas. What you are about to see are the fruits of their labor, synthesized with the creative genius of four New Dances choreographers who have been tasked with creating an original work for one full class of the Dance Division. Over the past two months, the choreographers and dancers have engaged in a process that celebrates the ideals of art making and creative enterprise through collaboration, ingenuity, risk-taking, and generosity. My gratitude goes to Marcus Jarrell Willis, Nelly van Bommel, Peter Chu, Stefanie Batten Bland, and the entire production team for pouring so much of themselves into this endeavor. I truly believe that together, we create something greater than the sum of our individual parts, renewing the spirit of community in a very tangible way. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Watch your tone and play well with others!” How does your reaction influence the space around you? Quality of sound is vital for communication and human recognition. Your character is expressed by the subtext of your tone. Playing with curiosity, repeated patterns move through the hidden truths of change, slip into a playground of compassion, and vacillate between waving emotions. Smeared, supple, and smooth grooves in the body extend from an internal rhythm that awakens the essence of why we move. Rhythms connect humans and help us grow. A communal experience without social barriers is celebrated when moving and working together––its profound effect on others can heal during divisive times. Thank you to third-year class, musicians, designers, and Taylor LaBruzzo for floating through water and playing with curiosity. *Stage Management Apprentice 4 Intermission Look Who's Coming to Dinner World premiere Choreography: Stefanie Batten Bland Rehearsal Assistant: Gregory Dolbashian Music: Original composition and performance by Paul Damian Hogan Lighting Design: Nicole Pearce Costume Design: Fritz Masten Stage Manager: Brianna Rafidi* Collaborating Dance Artists From the Class of 2019 Friday, Sunday matinee, Tuesday Saturday, Monday Clarissa Castañeda Chase Buntrock Ethan Colangelo Ethan Colangelo Matthew Gilmore** Maddie Hanson Zoe Hollinshead Myles Hunter Mio Ishikawa Kylie James Nicholas Jurica Oliver Jull Sean Lammer Miranda Ming-Quinn Megan Myers Jennie Palomo Moscelyne ParkeHarrison Anca Putin Simon Rydén Matthew Quigley Luca Devlyn Sierra Can Wang Benjamin Simoens Christina Zuccarello Jacob Thoman *Stage Management Apprentice **Matthew Gilmore is a Princess Grace Awardee for 2018 5 About Juilliard Dance Now under the direction of Alicia Graf Mack, Juilliard Dance aims to create true contemporary dancers—trained equally in classical ballet and modern dance. Established in 1951 by William Schuman during his tenure as president of The Juilliard School, with the guidance of founding division director Martha Hill, Juilliard became the first major teaching institution to combine equal instruction in both contemporary and ballet techniques. Each year 24 dancers are accepted into the four-year BFA program. In addition to daily ballet and modern technique classes, every dancer participates in classical and contemporary partnering, dance composition, anatomy, acting, dance history, stagecraft, production, music theory, repertory, and elements of performing. Dancers are encouraged to present their own choreographed works in informal concerts and workshop presentations. Every fall each class has the opportunity to work with established choreographers in premiere dances as part of the New Dances performances. Recent commissions include works by Bryan Arias, Roy Assaf, Gentian Doda, John Heginbotham, Matthew Neenan, Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, and Pam Tanowitz. Spring performances give dancers the opportunity to perform in established works from repertory. Recent repertory performances included works by Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Martha Graham, Jiríˇ Kylián, José Limón, Mark Morris, Crystal Pite, Paul Taylor, and Twyla Tharp. Juilliard Dance alumni include the choreographers and directors Robert Battle, Pina Bausch, Jessica Lang, Lar Lubovitch, Andrea Miller, Ohad Naharin, and Paul Taylor. Juilliard dancers are currently dancing in Nederlands Dans Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Ballet BC, Aspen/ Santa Fe
