The Major Roman Roads in the District Are Well-Known. Watling Street, To The major Roman roads in the district are well-known. Watling Street, to the west, ran from the Channel coast through London (Londinium), St Albans (Verulamium) and Redbourn before leading north-west to Wroxeter and Chester, much of it on the route of what is now the A5. Ermine Street, to the east, ran from London to Lincoln (Lindum) via Royston; the modern A10 follows much of this route. However, there was also of course a network of minor local roads, often of Celtic origin, some of which passed through the Wheathampstead area. One of these ran from Verulamium to Ickleford, where it joined the Icknield Way. Part of this route is now the north/south farm track south of Herons Farm, which was excavated in 1959 to reveal a foundation of red clay with a metalling of gravel and flint. Another such minor road ran from Verulamium to Welwyn and Braughing, passing through Coleman Green on the line of what is now Coleman Green Lane, eventually joining Ermine Street and Stane Street. These two roads are accepted as Roman by most authorities. In their book Roman Roads in the South-East Midlands (Gollancz 1964) a group of researchers who called themselves “The Viatores” claimed to have identified several more Roman roads around Wheathampstead, running both north/south and east/west, but their findings are now regarded with some scepticism. It is worth remembering that not all Roman roads are straight and not all straight roads are Roman. The Slype at Gustard Wood, for example, was built by Richard Birley Baxendale in the 19th century. .

PART I VENON/E TRIPONTIUM Preface THE following notes on the Roman Sites of South-West Leicester­ shire are of a somewhat fragmentary character. They will be found, however, to make some contribution to present day know­ ledge of the Midlands during the Roman occupation and will, the writer hopes, pave the way for excavation of a more ambitious character. The writer is convinced that systematic search and enquiry would reveal a number of other sites in this corner of the county at present unrecorded. Hinckley, Higham-on-the-Hill, Market Bosworth and Peckleton, where some evidence of Roman occupation has come to light, would possibly be found to be homesteads of the Roman-British farmer similar to Barwell and Sapcote. There is here every indication that in early forest clearings the land was tilled and stock raised for the important market town of Ratse Coritanorum. Owing to the lack of vigilance and to the superficial resem­ blance of Roman building material to what may be found on the site of any old cottage, there can be no doubt that much valuable evidence is often overlooked and for ever lost to us. Whatever historical interest these notes may afford to the antiquarian, their value has been considerably enhanced to the student by the descriptive and comparative notes on the coarse pottery contributed by Mr. B. H. St. J. O'Neil, of the Office of Works. His invaluable help in the examination of this material, and also in the revision of the complete type-script of this paper for the press, places the writer under a great debt of gratitude.

This name happens also to be that of a field to the left of the stream that flows through Cuttle Mill, three kilometres (two miles) south-east of the town, towards the River Tove. The legends go as far as claiming it as the site of Boudicca’s defeat by the Romans in AD61. Given that the site is close to the Roman road we know as Watling Street, added to which Towcester itself was a Roman town, the story might not be untrue; at least the possibility of its being true seemed to me worth investigating. A number of questions had to be answered: What were the opposing forces like? What were their fighting methods and usual tactics? What reports survive of these events? What clues do we have about the physical characteristics of the location in which the battle took place? Is there a way in which we can home in on the likely location, either by examining the landscape or by considering military strategy or, best of all, both of these? These questions are in no particular order because all of them matter.

But you will need your imagination and a sharp eye for the evidence in the landscape to tell the story, as the evidence of Roman occupation of the area is very largely buried. 1 Starting the Walk The walk starts where Church Walk meets Peterborough Road, at the corner of the school playing field. Turn right and walk down Peterborough Road, past the Village Hall and take the first left into Port Lane opposite the Prince of Wales Feathers. Go down Port Lane and stop when you have passed the right angle bends after the houses. 1. Berrystead Manor On the right, at the far side of the field, is the site of Berrystead Manor, which was occupied from the Saxon period onwards, and is one of the earliest known post-Roman settlements in the area.
