  • Surfing Florida: a Photographic History
    Daytona Beach, 1930s. This early photo represents the sport’s origins in Florida and includes waveriders Dudley and Bill Whitman, considered to be the State’s first surfers. Having met Virginia Beach lifeguards Babe Braith- wait and John Smith, who worked and demonstrated the sport in Miami Beach with Hawaiian style surfboards in the early 30s, Bill and Dudley proceeded to make their own boards out of sugar pine. Pioneer waterman Tom Blake showed up shortly thereafter and introduced the brothers – and much of the rest of the world – to his new hollow-core boards. The Whitman’s were quick to follow Blake’s lead and immediately abandoned their solid planks for the higher performance and lighter weight of hollow boards. Blake and the Whitmans remained close friends for life, and the Whitmans went on to foster major innovations and success in every aspect of their interests. Because lifestyle branding has been developed as a modern marketing strategy, this thesis examines the lifestyle marketing practices of the three major surfing companies Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy through an investigation of the sponsorship experiences of fifteen sponsored female surfers. The research paradigm guiding this study is an interpretive approach that applies Doris Lessing’s (1991) concept of conformity and Michel Foucault’s (1979) notion of surveillance and the technologies of the self. An ethnographic approach was utilised to examine the main research purpose, namely to: determine the impact of lifestyle marketing by Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy on sponsored female surfers.

We’ve all felt it. Maybe it was the church, school, or university choir when during mid-motet something clicked and you lost a bit of yourself while simultaneously gaining an ensemble. Or maybe it was dancing—another form of musicking—when you lost yourself in the movements, sounds, sights and smells of the event. Or was it the band or orchestra rehearsal as it finally came together. Or the old-time or céilidh session where your own fiddle playing seemed to flow from somewhere other than your own hands as you seemed to join the band in a moment of communitas, when you lost a sense of time, and achieve something truly beautiful. This type of musical being-in-the-world, as Jeff Todd Titon has called it (2008: 31), is one of the reasons I suspect most of us engage in musicking. I would go so far as to propose that pleasure in musicking is a universal human experience, but that this pleasure is a byproduct of musical participation, not the reason for its universality. Pleasure does not seem to lead to human universals—rather need does. All humans need food, water, air, sleep, intimate human contact—those needs are all obvious. Our apparent human need for language, musicking including dancing, as well as visual forms of expression are less well understood. The physician Oliver Sacks tells us that music engages more of the human brain than does language (2007).

Surfing When Captain James Cook landed in the Polynesian islands of Hawaii in 1778, he was surprised to find the native men and women, both royalty and ordinary citizens, riding waves standing on wooden boards. Despite being centuries old, surfing only really took off in the rest of the world from the 1950s, starting with the southwest coast of the USA. Nowadays surfing is enjoyed by surfers wherever there are waves, in Bali, Australia, Japan, France and even Britain. Contemporary surfers use lightweight fibreglass boards to catch waves of varying shapes and sizes as they roll in towards the beach. One of the main attractions of the sport is its simplicity – all a surfer really needs is a surfboard, a wetsuit and a way of getting to the beach. Although there has been a fiercely competitive professional tour since the 1970s, surfing traditionally appeals to young people with a relaxed outlook on life.
