Prof. Dürrin Alpakin Martinez-Caro December 2015, 260 pages Although generic, psychoanalytic and postcolonial approaches differ in nature, each of them might be helpful in revealing the strong affinity between chivalric romance and modern fantasy. In the light of generic analysis of these two genres, it is apparent that modern fantasy is the generic revival of the chivalric romance. Among these generic features, the quest motif, adventures to the other worlds, imaginary characters/settings and the battle between light and darkness, circular plot pattern and anachronism, highlight a substantial common point between these genres: the quest for “I”. This quest for “I” also prepares the ground to analyse these texts from Lacanian and Saidian vantage points: Subjectivity (in Lacanian epistemology) and configuration of national markers (in Saidian frame) display itself clearly in Sir Perceval of Galles (on a subjective level) and Guy of Warwick (on a social level) as chivalric romances and Belgariad (on both levels) as modern fantasy. Thus, the intertextuality between these two genres is laid bare even more strikingly within these theoretical perspectives. Bu ortak türsel elementler içinde, arayış motifi, başka dünyalara yolculuklar, hayali kahramanlar ve dünyalar, aydınlıkla karanlığın mücadelesi, döngüsel olay örgüsü ve çağaşım tekniği, iki tür arasındaki önemli bir ortak özelliğe dikkat çekmektedir: Kimlik arayışı. Bu kimlik arayışı da, metinlerin Lacancı ve Saidci bakış açılarından incelenmesine zemin hazırlamaktadır: Öznellik (Lacancı epistemolojide) ve ulusal belirleyicilerin biçimlendirilmesi (Saidci çerçevede) şövalye romansları, Sir Perceval of Galles (öznel bağlamda) ve Guy of Warwick’de (sosyal bağlamda), ve modern fantezi yapıtı, Belgariad’da (her iki bağlamda) açıkça görülmektedir. I offer in this dissertation a reading of four of these works (Athelston, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Cleges, and Sir Gowther) that considers each of them in the environment in which they are presented. Utilizing the contexts of manuscript placement, contemporary social and legal issues, and sociological changes affecting the audience, this work explores an analytical reading of each work that establishes possible meanings for each romance and possible motivations for their unnamed authors. Each work is ascribed its own chapter, focusing on a particular issue of English knighthood being interrogated. Chapter three suggests that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight repurposes the character of Gawain to observe the importance of oath taking and the bonds formed by knights from the practice of such. Chapter four focuses on the message of Athelston and argues that the work repositions the power of the crown beneath iii that of a regularized judicial system in which knights function as jurists.

This study analyzed a list of youth fantasy books and compared them to the books in the Harry Potter series, through a breakdown of their fantasy elements (i.e., fantasy subgenres, main characters, secondary characters, plot elements, and miscellaneous elements) .Books chosen for the study were selected from lists of youth fantasy books recommended to fantasy readers and others that are currently in print. The study provides a resource for fantasy readers by quantifying the elements of the youth fantasy books, as well as creating a guide for those interested in the Harry Potter books. It also helps fill a gap in the research of youth fantasy. The parley between Morgan and Tristan is cut brutally short when Tristan draws his sword without warning and kills Morgan by piercing his skull. This foul unchivalric blow might make the reader believe that he is reading one of the Middle High German heroic epics that regale their reader with stories of large-scale battles, backstabbing traitors and tragic last stands. Yet Gottfried’s Tristan is not commonly regarded as an epic, but one of the more revolutionary courtly romances of the High Middle Ages. It is a romance that deals primarily with the transcendental power of love. This example shows that lines separating the two major secular literary genres of the High Middle Ages are not very clearly drawn. The dominant secular aristocratic literary genre during the Early Middle Ages was the heroic epic. This genre described the adventures of heroic heroes and followed the values and ethos of the aristocratic audience.

Martial Arts, Acting, and Critical Responses to Jet Li’s Once Upon A Time In China Introduction It has been commonplace in western critical discourse to state that action stars can’t act. This seems particularly true when it comes to trans-bordering Chinese action stars like Jet Li. Criticism of his acting skills in his English-language films can be easily picked up from the press: Without the fight scenes, though, this film (Romeo Must Die) would be a bust… ‘Jet is our special effect,’ says Silver, summing up his star’s appeal neatly.1 Li’s martial arts skills are as brilliant as his acting skills aren’t.2 The action is fun and ultra-violent, the story is satisfactorily ridiculous and the acting is non-existent.3 “Good martial artist with limited acting ability” seems to represent a popular view of Chinese martial arts stars and indeed this is how they are often used in Hollywood films. Nevertheless, such a view also reveals a deep-rooted bias, i.e. the martial arts star is someone who knows less about acting than s/he does about fighting. Arthurian chivalric romance stands among some of the most well-known and enduring medieval literary pieces, appearing as a staple of Renaissance medievalism, Victorian medievalism, the work of pre-Raphaelites, and in modern pop culture, as in programs like Merlin. The tropes of Arthurian chivalric romance remain major identifiers of the Middle Ages. Even other major medieval texts still largely known and commonly studied in schools and universities today incorporate elements of the Arthurian tradition, as in The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, or the wider chivalric tradition, as in the lais of Marie de France. The fictional worlds encompassed by medieval literature contain many legendary creatures, prophesied events, and magical items which give color and memorable character to these many tales.
