However, with docks and the common pokeweed, leaves generally emerge from the same clump, not singly. As well, these plants have lance-shaped leaves, which seem to differ quite a bit from the oblong-shaped leaf of shown in the photo you submitted.Finally, it is possible that the plant is related to dock, but is a sorrel (Rumex acetosa) - some sorrels have leaves that are shaped more like the leaf in your photo.     Established 1990 PLANT LIST 2016 European mail order website www.crug-farm.co.uk CRÛG FARM PLANTS • 2016 Welcome to our 2016 list hope we can tempt you with plenty of our old favourites as well as some exciting new plants that we have searched out on our travels. There has been little chance of us standing still with what has been going on here in 2015. The year started well with the birth of our sixth grandchild. January into February had Sue and I in Colombia for our first winter/early spring expedition. It was exhilarating, we were able to travel much further afield than we had previously, as the mountainous areas become safer to travel. We are looking forward to working ever closer with the Colombian institutes, such as the Medellin Botanic Gardens whom we met up with. Consequently we were absent from the RHS February Show at Vincent Square. We are finding it increasingly expensive participating in the London shows, while re-branding the RHS February Show as a potato event hardly encourages our type of customer base to visit. A long standing speaking engagement and a last minute change of date, meant that we missed going to Fota near Cork last spring, no such problem this coming year. We were pleasantly surprised at the level of interest at the Trgrehan Garden Rare Plant Fair, in Cornwall. Hopefully this will become an annual event for us, as well as the Cornwall Garden Society show in April. Poor Sue went through the wars having to have a rush hysterectomy in June, after some timely results revealed future risks.

A study was commissioned to establish the facts behind the fatal incidents and the behavioural factors that increase the risk of an incident occurring. Objectives For some time the DTI has been concerned about the number of drowning incidents that take place within the domestic environment, particularly as initial indications point to the fact that a large number of young children are involved. Drowning is the third largest cause of accidental death in the home in under fives. The DTI has commissioned the Business Strategy Group to carry out a full investigation of child drowning incidents in the garden. The brief was to provide a comprehensive picture of the type of incident, the profile of those affected and the precise behavioural factors that increase the risk of a fatal incident.

Gettys5 1Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu Sangyo University, Japan; 2Suzhou Polytechnic Institute of Agriculture, China; 3Faculty of Agriculture, Kinki University, Japan; 4Faculty of Agriculture, Shinshu University, Japan; 5Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, University of Florida, USA ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to collect basic information on vegetation in road crack, especially in curbside crack of road, for evaluating plant biodiversity in urban landscape. A curbside crack in this study was defined as a linear space (under 20 mm in width) between the asphalt pavement and curbstone. The species composition of plants invading curbside cracks was surveyed in 38 plots along the serial National Route, over a total length of 36.5 km, in Fukuoka City in southern Japan. In total, 113 species including native plants (83 species, 73.5%), perennial herbs (57 species, 50.4%) and woody plants (13 species, 11.5%) were recorded in curbside cracks. Buried seeds were also obtained from soil in curbside cracks, which means the cracks would possess a potential as seed bank. Incidentally, no significant differences were found in the vegetation characteristics of curbside cracks among land-use types (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, P > 0.05). From these results, curbside cracks would be likely to play an important role in offering habitat for plants in urban area.

    Phylogeny and Phylogenetic Taxonomy of Dipsacales, with Special Reference to Sinadoxa and Tetradoxa (Adoxaceae)

    PHYLOGENY AND PHYLOGENETIC TAXONOMY OF DIPSACALES, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINADOXA AND TETRADOXA (ADOXACEAE) MICHAEL J. DONOGHUE,1 TORSTEN ERIKSSON,2 PATRICK A. REEVES,3 AND RICHARD G. OLMSTEAD 3 Abstract. To further clarify phylogenetic relationships within Dipsacales,we analyzed new and previously pub- lished rbcL sequences, alone and in combination with morphological data. We also examined relationships within Adoxaceae using rbcL and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. We conclude from these analyses that Dipsacales comprise two major lineages:Adoxaceae and Caprifoliaceae (sensu Judd et al.,1994), which both contain elements of traditional Caprifoliaceae.Within Adoxaceae, the following relation- ships are strongly supported: (Viburnum (Sambucus (Sinadoxa (Tetradoxa, Adoxa)))). Combined analyses of C ap ri foliaceae yield the fo l l ow i n g : ( C ap ri folieae (Diervilleae (Linnaeeae (Morinaceae (Dipsacaceae (Triplostegia,Valerianaceae)))))). On the basis of these results we provide phylogenetic definitions for the names of several major clades. Within Adoxaceae, Adoxina refers to the clade including Sinadoxa, Tetradoxa, and Adoxa.This lineage is marked by herbaceous habit, reduction in the number of perianth parts,nectaries of mul- ticellular hairs on the perianth,and bifid stamens. The clade including Morinaceae,Valerianaceae, Triplostegia, and Dipsacaceae is here named Valerina. Probable synapomorphies include herbaceousness,presence of an epi- calyx (lost or modified in Valerianaceae), reduced endosperm,and distinctive chemistry, including production of monoterpenoids. The clade containing Valerina plus Linnaeeae we name Linnina. This lineage is distinguished by reduction to four (or fewer) stamens, by abortion of two of the three carpels,and possibly by supernumerary inflorescences bracts.     Deutzia John Frett and Andrew Adams Deutzia is a large genus with more than 60 species and even more cultivars. It is a group of plants that is grown widely in the US, Europe and Asia primarily for its flowers. It has been popular in the US since its use in Victorian gardens, but the deutzia of today is nothing like that Deutzia ‘Mont Rose’ Deutzia ×kalmiiflora of days gone by. These plants were stunning with compact. Several of the selections offered in the sale grow typically white flowers in the spring garden, then fading 1–2 feet tall and wide, functioning more as a groundcover into the background during the summer and fall. Fruits are a than an individual shrub. These plants are best planted in dry capsule of little ornamental or wildlife value and foliage groups and are especially suitable for slopes. They are even becoming a dirty yellow before dropping in the autumn. They small enough to be integrated into the perennial border but were useful plants in larger gardens and shrub borders where do not cut them back in the fall as these shrubs flower in they could be combined with other shrubs to provide year- the spring. This means they flower on last year’s stems. If you round interest. want to tidy up these compact plants, cut them to the ground The traditional Deutzia are still after flowering and they will regrow and produce flowers very useful in today’s shrub the following spring.
