  • Method of Legitimization of the Kingdom of Sambalpur
1 MEDIEVAL ORISSA: METHOD OF LEGITIMIZATION OF THE KINGDOM OF SAMBALPUR Brundabana Mishra Research Scholar CHS/SSS/JNU 143(O) Brahmaputra Hostel New Delhi-110067 09868096337 [email protected] Abstract This paper has an attempt to find out the different method which adopted by the Chauhan ruler of western Orissa in the 16 th and 17 th centuries in order to legitimatize their ruled over the Sambalpur. The political legitimacy of the Chauhan of Western Orissa did not come overnight and they struggled hard to legitimize their political power. Unlike the other medieval rulers of Orissa, the Chauhan did not seek the blessing of any external authority for legitimacy rather; they represented themselves as the sources of legitimacy for their feudatories. They brought their legitimacy through the process of assimilation with the tribal flock, by donating land to Brahman, by associating religion in the state policy and by adopting local tribal god and goddess as their tutelary divinity. They patronized both the tribal and non tribal pantheons to gain military help, economic support and political loyalty from their subject. Among the different methods which the Chauhan of Sambalpur adopted to legitimize their authority over Sambalpur the author of the article has tried to find out the role of fort, capital not in the monetary sense but in the sense of state headquarter and different God and Goddess . To arrive at a definite historical conclusion how the Chauhan legitimatize their power over Sambalpur the author of the article consulted the only contemporary as well as authentic document of sixteenth century, ‘Kosalananda Kavyam’, the eighteen century work ‘Jaya Chandrika’ written in Lariya by Prahallad Dubey, the court poet of Sarangarh and other vernacular sources which are used adequately.

  • The Mirror Reflection of Sambalpur State Through the Courtly Chronicle Called Kosalananda Kavyam
1 The Mirror Reflection of Sambalpur State through the Courtly Chronicle called Kosalananda Kavyam Brundabana Mishra Research Scholar CHS/SSS/JNU/New Delhi [email protected] Abstract While tapping the history of Sambalpur State, the author consulted the only contemporary as well as authentic document of sixteenth century, ‘Kosalananda Kavyam’, the equivalent of Kalhana’s Rajatarangini. To arrive at a definite historical conclusion how the state was formed and consolidated the author of the article has looked the other sources like Jaya Chandrika written in Lariya by Prahallad Dubey the court poet of Sarangarh in the middle of the eighteen Century and other vernacular sources are used adequately. This paper has an attempt to look how the state of Sambalpur was formed by the Chauhan ruler of Patnagarh in the middle of sixteenth century in the western part of Orissa on the basic of Kosalananda Kavyam. In the same time it has an argument that ‘Kosalananda Kavyam’ is a classified source to write the history of Western Orissa starting from the beginning of the 14th century to the end of the 17 th century. Theoretically this paper has divided into two parts the first part deal about the Kosalananda Kavyam and addresses some of the basic question such as; who has written the Kavyam, under what circumstance and what is contain in the Kavyam. The second part deal about the state of Sambalpur and throw light on the subject like; why the state of Sambalpur was formed, who formed and in what circumstance it was formed in the middle of the 16 th century.

State Formation in Early Modern Orissa [India]: Ecology and Geopolitics in Sambalpur Kingdom Dr. Brundaban Mishra Abstract This paper aims to find how ecological and geopolitical potentiality of Sambalpur region played vital roles in the formation of state in early modern Orissa. The study also endeavors to inquire how the state has taken a leaf out of the pan-Indian Empires, which were passing through a series of political crises, to establish the formidable Sambalpur kingdom.
