Annual Report

Date: August 13, 2015

Report for the Year:‐2015

Committee: Continuum of Care

The Continuum of Care committee of IONL will serve as a conveyor for networking, dialogue and supportive programming for leaders across the continuum.

Committee Members: Sandra Berger, Joanne Carlin, Jacqueline Conrad, Pamela Dunley, Marti Edwards, Carol Emery, Pamela Euberg, Kathleen Ferket, Julia Knight, Cheri McEssy, Jacqueline Medland, Pam Nikiel, Catherine Potter, Julianna Sellett, Susan Wickey

Goals and Accomplishments:  Assemble committee of nurse leaders representing practice areas which cross the continuum.  Build collaboration and serve as a conveyor for leaders to network across the continuum  Communicate the IONL value proposition to nurse leaders across the continuum  Recruit new IONL members across the continuum  Offer programing pertinent to leaders across the continuum

Summary: This is a new and exciting committee for 2015! Membership and engagement continues to grow throughout the year. The COC committee held two conference calls and one in person networking event throughout 2015. We have representatives from across the state involved with ACO’s, education, home care, skilled nursing facilities, private sector assisted living, and consulting.

The May networking event was attended by seven members. A very engaged group discussed future opportunities, including educational needs to prepare students for practice along the continuum, healthcare system plans for expanding the continuum of care, improving communication along the continuum, and the need for breaking down silos between care settings. We are excited the annual conference will feature a new innovative program featuring 5 care continuum speakers describing issues impactful to all leaders. IONL is well positioned to serve leaders across the continuum.

Respectfully submitted, Kathleen Ferket, MSN, APN‐BC, Chair of Continuum of Care Committee Vice President, AMITA Care Continuum

The Illinois Nurse Leader Fellowship is a program dedicated to the development and support of managers and new directors from diverse practice environments across the continuum of care, throughout the state. Incorporating education, mentoring, and networking, the fellowship is designed to build and enhance leadership skills and competencies. The 2016 program will run from January through November and consists of four interactive sessions (1.5 days each), independent work, and a project in the participant’s workplace setting. The participant must agree to attend all sessions. Upon completion, graduates agree to serve as mentors to future participants.

All candidates for the Illinois Nursing Leadership Fellowship must be nominated by the Chief Nursing Officer (or designee) of their employing organization. It is strongly recommended that organizations send two participants so a team approach may be utilized.

Applications for 2016 will be available October 1st!

Susan K. Campbell DNP, RN Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer Advocate Health Care

Why did you become a member of Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders? When I was promoted into my first nursing leadership role several years ago, my supervisor recommended I join IONL as a way to connect with other nursing leaders throughout the state and grow as a nursing leader. I found those connections invaluable and continue to rely on those relationships today in my new role as System Chief Nursing Officer for Advocate Health Care.

Why would you encourage others to participate in IONL? IONL offers the ability to network across the state with group of very talented nursing leaders. IONL’s educational offerings are relevant to the national and state agenda and allow nursing professionals to connect with other leaders faced with similar challenges. As the future of healthcare unfolds, IONL will be essential in assisting nursing leaders to transform their organizations.

The Importance of Joining a Professional Nurses Association

While it's easy to join, the real benefit comes from active involvement. There are many levels of involvement: hosting a meeting, volunteering for a committee or task force, reviewing abstracts for a conference, and conference planning. Let's take a look at some of the advantages of joining a professional nurses organization.

• Education: Science and technology change rapidly-and you need to keep up with the changes that affect health care. Like state licensing boards, many specialty certification boards require you to take continuing education (CE) courses to stay up-to-date in your practice. Some associations even offer CE activities to members at reduced prices.

• Annual Conventions: As a member of a professional organization, you'll get notices announcing major conventions that you may be able to attend at a discount rate. Making professional contacts is a big draw at these conventions, where you'll meet other nurses in your specialty.

• Networking: As a member of a professional association, you'll have plenty of networking opportunities besides connecting with other health care professionals at national, state, or local conventions. For example, you will probably have access to online chats or forums at your associations' Web site. Not only can you network with your peers and other professionals, but you can also hear how others are handling some of the same issues you face.

• Safeguarding Your Profession: You are part of a unified voice. Being aware and empowered to move your profession forward, to limit barriers to practice, and decrease the impact of uninformed legislators and other parties. To fully embrace your profession.

• Certification: Many professional organizations offer certification. Becoming certified demonstrates your commitment to excellence in your practice.

• Targeted Products and Resources: When you join a professional organization, you may get discounts to obtain online CE, newsletters, certification review materials, and much more. Some nursing organizations offer members discounts on auto, life, and professional liability insurance and feature special credit card offers. Many nursing organizations offer members an official journal that may contain peer-reviewed, clinical articles and research relevant to the specialty.

• Career Advancement: Participating in an association is the first step towards advancing your career. Employers often look for participation in professional organizations.

• Career Assistance: When you're searching for a new job, look to your association's career center for openings, advice, and opportunities. In fact, keep an eye on that information periodically, whether you're job searching or not, to stay in touch with the latest trends in your specialty. Review job openings for salaries and benefits so you know current earning potentials. Also, networking assists in word of mouth job openings.

• Web Sites: Practically all nursing associations have Web sites you can explore. Typically, they offer general information about the association that anyone can access, as well as member-only areas with restricted access. The members-only section generally contains a wealth of resources.

What is NC-3?

In support of Illinois’ Staffing by Patient Acuity Law, IONL has created the following platform. The Nursing Care Committee Consortium (NC-3) is an attempt to bring some collaboration, education, and sharing for our state mandated Nursing Care Committees. The purpose is to promote the quality of care and improve the delivery of healthcare services through a lively exchange of ideas among nursing care committees throughout the State of Illinois. You do not have to be an IONL member to participate; all hospitals are welcome!

This is about us sharing our best practices, our struggles, and our needs as Illinois nurses and meeting the intent of our state law.
