CHESS ASIAN CONTINENTAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP HELD AT MASHHAD, IRAN FROM 01 ST TO 11 TH MAY, 2011 The Asian Continental Chess Championship held at Mashhad, Iran from 01 st to 11th May, 2011 GM Harikrishan and WGM Harika Dronavalli won Golds for India in Men & Women section. Eesha Karavade won Bronze in the Women’s section. ASIAN YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP HELD AT SUBIC, PHILIPPINES FROM 14 TH TO 22 ND MAY, 2011. Indians won ten out of the twelve titles in the Asian Youth Chess Championship that concluded at Subic City in the Philippines on May 21, 2011. Girls won all the six titles. In the Under-12 section, Aravindh Chithambaram tied for first and won a silver medal. Among the winners, impressive was L.N.Ram Aravind of Tiruchi who became the only player to win all nine games in all 12 sections. Indians won 18 medals out of a maximum 36. India’s pet section was the Boys or Open Under-10 section and the Girls Under-10 section. We recorded podium sweeps there. All the three in both these sections scored the same number of points and tied for the first place. Debashis Das (U-18), Girish Koushik (U-14), Sankalp Baliarsingh (U-10), Ram Aravind (U-8) in boys and Rucha Pujari (U-18), Nandhidhaa (U-16), G.K.Monnisha (U-14), Ivana FUrtado (U-12), Bidhar Rutumbara (U-10), C.Lakshmi (U-8) became Asian age group champions. ASIAN JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP HELD AT KANDI, SRILANKA FROM 01ST TO 09TH JUNE, 2011. M.Shyam Sundar of Chennai and Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa won the Asian Junior Chess Championship that concluded at Colombo on June 8, 2011. Significantly, India completed podium sweeps in both the sections. ASIAN SCHOOLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP HELD AT NEW DELHI FROM 16 TH TO 23 RD DECEMBER, 2011 Indians once again proved their growing superiority in the age group championships as they won 11 Gold, 12 Silver and 10 Bronze out of the 36 at stake in the Asian School Chess Championship held at New Delhi from 16th to 23rd December, 2011. Asian Schools Championships & U5 Kindergarten held at New Delhi, India from 13 th to 20 th December, 2012. 8th Asian Schools Chess Championship-2012 was orgainised at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Delhi. 415 players from 11 different countries participated in this prestigious championship, which had three formats of Rapid, Standard and Blitz events and comprising of 37 categories. In the Rapid event, Indians once again proved its growing superiority in the age group championships as they won 12 Gold, 11 Silver and 9 Bronze out of the 42 at stake. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH 2012 HELD AT MOSCOW, RUSSIA FROM 10 TH TO 30 TH MAY, 2012. GM Viswanathan Anand won the World Chess title for five times, each against a different opponent. He had won the title in various formats. WORLD YOUTH U-16 CHESS OLYMPIAD 2012 HELD AT ISTANBUL, TURKEY FROM 28 TH AUGUST TO 6 TH SEPTEMBER 2012. The 40-team event was organized by the Turkish Chess Federation from August 29 to September 5, 2012. India had won this event more than once before but Russia fielded a very strong team. Top seed Russia won the title followed by second seed Iran taking the second place. Third seed India finished third. India lost to Russia and Iran and beat the rest of the eight teams. WOMEN'S FIDE GRAND PRIX SERIES HELD AT ANKARA, TURKEY FROM 15 TH TO 29 TH SEPTEMBER, 2012 The final leg of 2011-2012 FIDE Grand Prix was won by Koneru Humpy of India at Ankara, capital of Turkey on September 28. 2012. The 12-player all-play-all event had a prize fund of Rs.28,00,000. WORLD YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2012 HELD AT MARIBOR, SLOVENIA FROM 07 TH TO 19 TH NOVEMBER, 2012 India finished at position No.1 along with Russia with identical tally of medals (3 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze) in the World Youth Chess Championship where 91 countries took part, thus showcasing India as the growing power in children’s chess. .
