Baker M.A., Bowling Green State University, 2000 M.A., Karl Franzens University, Graz, Austria, 1998 Committee Chair: Katharina Gerstenberger ABSTRACT “The Return of the Child Exile: Re-enactment of Childhood Trauma in Jewish Life- Writing and Documentary Film” is a study of the literary responses of writers who were Jewish children in hiding and exile during World War II and of documentary films on the topic of refugee children and children in exile. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the relationships between trauma, memory, fantasy and narrative in a close reading/viewing of different forms of Jewish life-writing and documentary film by means of a scientifically informed approach to childhood trauma. Chapter 1 discusses the reception of Binjamin Wilkomirski’s Fragments (1994), which was hailed as a paradigmatic traumatic narrative written by a child survivor before it was discovered to be a fictional text based on the author’s invented Jewish life-story.

2/20/2017 Making Monsters in László Nemes’ Son of Saul • Senses of Cinema Making Monsters in László Nemes’ Son of Saul Chari Larsson December 2016 Feature Articles Issue 81 Abstract >> http://sensesofcinema.com/2016/featurearticles/sonofsaul/ 1/21 2/20/2017 Making Monsters in László Nemes’ Son of Saul • Senses of Cinema But if I must continue to write, to look, to frame, to photograph, to show my pictures and think of all this, it is precisely to render such an incomplete phrase. It should rather say “It is unimaginable, therefore, I must imagine, in spite of all.” – Georges DidiHuberman1 A horror story, the face is a horror story – Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari2 In August 2015, French philosopher and art historian Georges DidiHuberman wrote an open letter to Hungarian director, László Nemes: Dear László Nemes, Your film, Son of Saul, is a monster. A necessary, coherent, beneficial, innocent monster.3 What are we to make of these opening lines? How does one create a monster? Written in the immediate aftermath of DidiHuberman’s viewing of the film, the letter is an intimate and emotional tribute to the director’s harrowing representation of extreme human misery set inside the gas chambers at AuschwitzBirkenau concentration and extermination camp in 1944. Nemes adds his voice to a long and contested history of philosophical debates concerning the relationship between the Holocaust and the status of the cinematic image. How can cinema do justice to representing the Holocaust? What role can images play, without trivialising or sentimentalising an event that is located at the limit of representation? Against this hegemonic line of thought, the discourse emphasising Holocaust unrepresentability has drawn increasing scrutiny, with younger generations of philosophers such as Georges DidiHuberman questioning the absolutism of the prohibition of representation.

  • Never Look Away
NEVER LOOK AWAY An original screenplay by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck 1. INT. DRESDEN ART MUSEUM – DAY KURT, a small 5-year-old boy with steel grey eyes gazes at the distorted, grimacing faces of soldiers from the hands of Otto Dix, the twisted colors and shapes of Kirchner, Heckel and Schmidt-Rottluff, the bizarre world of Paul Klee. At Kurt's side is his AUNT ELISABETH, an 19 year-old blonde of seductive beauty. They are part of a group of maybe two dozen adults, all ears to a self- confidently eloquent EXHIBITION GUIDE: GUIDE (nodding with regret) Modern art. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Before the National Socialists took charge, Germany, too, had its share of "modern" art, meaning: something different just about every year - as follows from the word itself. Ironic chuckles from the audience. EXHIBITION GUIDE (CONT'D) But the Germany of National Socialism once again demands a German art which, like the entirety of a nation’s creative values, must be, and shall be, eternal. Bearing no such eternal value for its nation, it can be of no higher value even today. As they stroll past paintings of unconstrained prostitutes, yellow hydrocephalic heads, smirking captains of industry, African-style sculptures… EXHIBITION GUIDE (CONT'D) The German woman is ridiculed and equaled to prostitutes. The paintings appear to confirm this. EXHIBITION GUIDE (CONT'D) The soldier is portrayed either as a murderer or as the victim of senseless slaughter, all this in an attempt to destroy the German people’s deeply rooted respect for a soldier’s bravery.

FLM302: READING GERMAN FILM 3: CONTEMPORARY GERMAN CINEMA Course Outline, 2019-2020 Semester A 15 credits Course Organiser Dr Alasdair King [email protected] Arts 1: 2.08 Office hours: Wednesday 11-1 Timetable Screenings: Tuesday 10-12, Arts 1 G.34 Lectures: Tuesday 1-2, Bancroft G.07 Seminars: Thursday 2-3, Arts 2 3.17 Course Description This module will allow students to analyse various aspects of German film culture in the new millennium. It explores developments in recent German filmmaking in the context of the increasing globalisation of media industries and images and in the context of contemporary cinema’s relationship to other media forms. Stu- dents will explore the dynamics of recent German cinema, including its successes at major award ceremonies and at film festivals, its relationship to Hollywood and to other international cinemas, its distinct approach to questions of the audience, of auteurism and of production, and to transnational images, particularly con- cerning the emergence of Turkish-German filmmaking. Students will also address the representation of politics, terrorism, history, heritage and the national past, the engagement with issues of performance, gender and sexuality, the use of genre and popular commercial film styles, and the re-emergence of a ‘counter cinema’ in the work of the ‘Berlin School’ and after. Seminar work on current trends will allow students to work independently to research an individual case study of a chosen film and its significance to contemporary German cinema.
