Harris June 12, 1930 – March 13, 2020 Born in Philadelphia, Bishop Barbara Harris is the first woman to be consecrated a bishop in the Episcopal Church, and the entire Anglican Communion. As a laywoman, she served as the crucifer at the ordination of the Philadelphia Eleven – the first ordination of women in the Episcopal Church – which took place at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia. She is remembered as a powerful advocate for justice within our church, constantly challenging us “never to be instruments of our own or another’s oppression.” Bishop Barbara was a woman of great truth and wit who inspired, challenged, and was held dear by Episcopalians across the country. With her death coming at the beginning of lockdown, it was decided to hold her funeral when it was safe to re-gather (more than 8,000 people attended her consecration as Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts in 1989). To date, no funeral has been held. The current bishops of Massachusetts issued a call for churches to commemorate Bishop Barbara on this first anniversary of her death. Below is an excerpt from their letter: It has now been nearly a year since the death of the Rt. Rev. Barbara C. Harris. Throughout the church Bishop Harris was a courageous pioneer, an outspoken prophet, and an indefatigable champion of God's justice and witness to God's grace. In the Diocese of Massachusetts she was for us also a wise counselor and faithful companion. For three decades our diocesan gatherings were enlivened by her keen wit, consummate storytelling, and impromptu musical accompaniment. It has ever been the delight of the faithful to recollect with gratitude the lives of those in whom Christ's love has been manifest. We commemorate their lives for the inspiration and strength which we derive from their witness. We turn to them also as continuing companions in the Spirit, forebears of whose love and prayers we remain assured. - Bishop Alan Gates and Bishop Gale Harris, Diocese of Massachusetts 2 Liturgy of the Word Prelude Lenten Reflection Composer: Lani Smith Gathering and Welcome Thanksgiving for the life of the Rt. Rev. Barbara C. Harris Opening Hymn “Eternal Lord of Love” Tune: Old 124th 3 A Penitential Order BCP 351 Celebrant: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People: God’s mercy endures forever. The Summary of the Law Mark 12:29-31 Celebrant: Jesus said, “The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” Confession and Absolution Celebrant: Let us confess our sins to God. Silence All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. Kyrie Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Everliving God, in every generation you cause fresh winds to renew, refresh, and refine your people and in your Word summon us to live courageously as Easter people in an often Good Friday world. Defend us in our own day to make no peace with oppression; that boldly following the example of your servant Barbara Clementine Harris, chosen bishop in your church, we may strive not for ease or fame but gladly toil and walk with you all along our pilgrim journey; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. 4 The First Reading Numbers 21:4-9 From Mount Hor the Israelites set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.” Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Psalm 19 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, * and his mercy endures for ever. 2 Let all those whom the Lord has redeemed proclaim * that he redeemed them from the hand of the foe. 3 He gathered them out of the lands; * from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. 17 Some were fools and took to rebellious ways; * they were afflicted because of their sins. 18 They abhorred all manner of food * and drew near to death's door. 19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, * and he delivered them from their distress. 20 He sent forth his word and healed them * and saved them from the grave. 21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercy * and the wonders he does for his children. 22 Let them offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving * and tell of his acts with shouts of joy. 5 Sequence Hymn “Jesus Calls Us” Tune: Galilee Holy Gospel John 3:14-21 Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light 6 and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.” Reader: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon Rev. Hilary Greer The Prayers of the People All are invited to share your prayers to the chatbox. The intercessor names the prayers in the chatbox, and the celebrant closes with: Celebrant: Lord, grant us simplicity of faith and a generosity of service that gives without counting cost. A life overflowing with Grace poured out from the One who gave everything, that we might show the power of love to a broken world, and share the truth from a living Word. Lord, grant us simplicity of faith, and a yearning to share it. Amen. The Peace BCP 360 Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.
