Page 2 THE ROYAL CROSS FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Welcome to the new Triennium! Triennium is an important word for our Order of the Daughters of the King, just as it is for our Episcopal Church. It represents an important space of time, three years, in which profound events and growth are expectantly planned and experienced. Dear friends, pray with H^pi me that God will "go before us in welcome, be with us in fellowship along ||B^ ^ the way, and as we pass by, remain in the hearts of those we touch", for in these months coming, may we all come together to see even more clearly what Rl; ■ ' IiHHb God is calling our Order to do and to be in the Church and the world. To be called to serve as National President is the greatest, most humbling, ^ most joyous honor that has ever been bestowed upon me. When I gave my Hjg . ji i vow to "endeavor to devote the best of myself to the tasks which the office BBp - j of president demands of me, continually seeking to be used by my Lord Jesus ' Christ", I put my time and my life into God's hands. 2 Corinthians 4:5..."For / it is not ourselves that we are preaching, but Christ Jesus as the Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake." And so for myself it is my desire

My husband Ron and I live in Holland, Michigan, Diocese of Westem Michigan. We havefour grown children, three grandsons, and one granddaughter. We attend All Saints' in what is called the "Cape Cod of the Midwest" Laurie Ann Herman Saugatuck. All Saints' is the church where my father served as rector and my mother Lorraine served as rector's wife for 20 years, so that makes me a theologian's offspring. Right! Another preacher's kid. I was bom in Milwaukee a cradle Episcopalian and baptized in All Saints' Cathedral by Rt. Rev. Benjamin Ivins, Bishop of Milwaukee. In this Royal Cross you will meet our new National Chaplain, the present Bishop of Milwaukee, the Rt. Rev. Roger J. White. The pector^ cross he wears is the same one worn by Bishop Ivins. My mother and I became members of Daughters in the Bishop Whittemore chapter of All Saints' twenty-six years ago. During these past years I have known and esteemed past presidents Hattie Bunting, Barbara Merrick, Ethel Ripley, Whitty Isaacs and Elizabeth Hart. I have served on National Council with both Whitty and Elizabeth. Serving on Council requires a huge commitment of time and hard work and would be virtually impossible without your prayers and support. My vision for our Order and all members begins with Jesus. For as our statement reads, I cannot live a day without Jesus Christ in my life. My prayers are that we hold and expand the vision already given...to be those women with "an abundance of consecrated energy" and to give that energy for the spread of Christ's Kingdom, especially to women and girls. The church will survive if it is rooted in prayer...it cannot survive without the prayers of its women. We need to give our utmost attention to the life-blood of our Order...each and every chapter and its members. We need to encourage our young women to become Junior Daughters and to continue to nourish and support our Daughters- at-Large. We must keep our contacts and recognition strong for our older members, many of whom are no longer able to attend church, for they hold within them the gracious wisdom of their age. We need to hold even more strongly to our vow to be evangelists, just as we did before the decade of evangelism arrived and what we will continue to do long after it departs. We began our history supporting missionaries and now we are sending out missionaries from within our own ranks on council and because of these efforts we have Daughters in South Dakota, Alaska and Uganda. More work is ahead on our baptismal covenant study guide and emphasis on Christian formation. I believe God is calling Daughters to remain steadfast in their vows and to keep their eyes on the cross...to remain praying in those gaps of His church's growth pangs on the left and division and pressure on the right. We have come a long way from the images of the "ladies in tennis shoes" and the so-called "bleeding hearts" and I thank God for the pioneering spirits of earlier Daughters. We are BECOMING an army of "up-front prayer-warrior women in cross-training shoes" and we can...just do it...by keeping our sights set on the constant love, healing and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. With my love and prayers,

Laurie Ann Herman ETTER FROM OUR CHAPLAIN

Dear Sisters in Christ, I am surprised and delighted to be invited to serve the Daughters of the King as your national chaplain. I ask for your prayers and I assure you of mine. A little background about me -1 was educated and prepared for the ordained ministry in England and served my curacy in the north of England (I am a Yorkshireman-from James Herriott's country!). I worked as a priest in southern niinois for twelve years and in Indianapolis for almost five years before becoming the tenth Bishop of Milwaukee, where I have now served for the past ten years. I come to you from a good tradition of consecrated in 1984. Both Don Wimberly and Craig Anderson come from that good vintage year for bishops! My interests as a bishop have been in the areas of formation in the Faith (catechumenate process); spiritual development, especially of the clergy The Rt. Reverend Roger (Cornerstone Project, work on clergy spirituality); and the development ofrenewed John White parishes and individuals with emphasis on serving others, especially in global mission opportunities. I have been privileged to chair the coordinating committee reforming relationships between our Church and the Russian Orthodox Church -1 have strong ecumenical commitments and serve on the Standing Committee for Ecumenical Relations. This will give you an inkling of who I am and where I have served. My wife's name is Pru (yes ~ from Prudence!) and we have three married children - "twenty-somethings" and one gorgeous grandson! But enough of me ...

I believe that God calls us to serve our loving God and gives opportunity for us to be encountered and thus to respond to our encounter with God, with Christ, with God the Holy Spirit. Such an encounter brings us to want to turn our lives around and be Christ-people - followers in the way of Jesus Christ. We are then, I believe, formed in the community of faith - in the word of God - the tradition of the Apostles - formed by the loving Christian community, strongly supported by the sacraments of the Church and buoyed up in prayer, as we support others with our prayers. All of this - called, encountered, formed, and nurtured to go - to go for Christ - proclaiming the good news and hope of the Gospel with our words and also with our deeds. Striving to be "ones for others" - as was Christ - we seek to serve Christ in all people, to work for God's will, and to be those who bring reconciliation. So, I invite you to continue with your ministries of prayer, proclamation as evangelists, and service. Let us together serve Christ as those he has called to be people of praise - in our prayers - yes! - in our words to others - yes! - and in our deeds - yes! - always giving God the praise, our thanks, and all the glory. It is very good to be a small part of your life. I look forward to a long and fruitful journey together in Christ. Peace and much joy in Jesus Christ - who is the way, the truth, and new life!

In Christ's service,

+Roger J. White Bishop of Milwaukee

ROSEANN CAMP, SELF-DENIAL FUND CHAIRMAN

I came home so refreshed after Triennial and the week was as close to perfect as one could be. Dorothy Gist of the Missions Department of the Episcopal Church Center gave us needed information regarding the state of missions in the Church today.(Indeed, the General Convention voted to increase mission, but each diocese will have increasing responsibility due to the lack of funds at the national level.)

Susan Stiles, our missionary to China, could not come due to eye surgery. Please pray for her continued recovery. Her delightful stand-in was the Rev. Elyn Maclnnis, a priest in China. She graphically outlined the condition of the Church there, and a tape is available of her talk. She and Susan presented us with a beautiful tapestry depicting Christ, the work of a Chinese artist. The tapestry will hang in the National Office in Marietta. Seminarians in China need Bibles and textbooks and hopefully we can help with that request. We heard from Daughters in Alaska, and Uganda, followed by Ruth Smith's slide presentation of the camp for deaf children conducted this summer on the Pine Ridge Reservation. 1994 TRIENNIAL NATIONAL RETREAT^ NASHVILLE, IN

"Fill My Cup, Lord" Numerous hours over the past three years were occupied with making plans, writing lists, telephoning contacts, arranging meals and inviting leaders and guests to our Triennial meeting which took place in the pastoral setting of Brown County, Indiana. Under the grace-filled direction of Noreen Burroughs, helping hands brought forth a triennial meeting extraordinaire that could not have been better named. Many vehicles for worship were used to give the participants a taste of the rich variety of liturgies in the Episcopal Church. Retreat leaders included The Rt. Rev. William Cox, The Rev. Terry Fullum and The Rev. Tom Belt. Nine bishops and many priests from all over the United States participated in the varied services. The program was full and filling and just when it was thought there could be nothing more, Noreen and her committee were back with another inspirational, thought-provoking presentation. Missionary night was filled with reports from Alaska, China, and the on-going work in Uganda. The business of the Order was completed smoothly during the retreat week and we took time to say thank you to Elizabeth Hart, Mary Ellen McKay, Ruth Smith, Patti Rose, Noreen Burroughs, Stephanie Brooks-Wiggins and Norma Echols, our out going Council members. We welcomed two new Council members and six new Provincial Representatives who join the two serving second terms as Province Rep.(See inside front cover for the list ofthe 1994-97 National Coxmcil members.) Edmond Lee Browning, Presiding Bishop, was celebrant and preacher for the Sunday Eucharist and joined the Daughters for lunch at which time he gave a warm, heart-felt talk. He shared how much it meant to him to begin his Triennial meetings with the Daughters who have prayed daily for him and his staff as they prepared for the General Convention. Bishop Browning asked that we continue to pray for peace and compassion. The week was filled with inspirational messages and the time gave us a chance to listen to each other and to our Lord. It was a time to share our sorrows, our joys, our plans and our hopes for a better, more loving world. More than 279 people from 35 states in addition to guests from China, Uganda and the Virgin Islands left with love in their hearts and prayers on their lips for the Church, for the world and for their newly-made friends in Christ. aMy cup runneth over! Sue Schlanbusch -1997 Triennial Retreat Chairman Relates Bishop's Prophecy As one of your new vice-presidents,it is my great pleasure to tell you that our speakers will be The Rev. Margaret Neill, from the Diocese of Westem Michigan and The Rt. Rev. Stephen Charleston, Bishop of Alaska who spoke at our Triennial Retreat banquet. The following words are the prophecy Bishop Charleston delivered to our Order: "Everyone of you is here not by accident, but by a purpose. Everyone of you has been calied here by a ioving Father, because you have been anointed by God to do vi/onderful things in His Precious and Powerful Name. You too have been brought here to be members of the Daughters of the King because you are going to be the healers and the creators. You are going to be the women who are going to give birth and strength and new energy to this Church of ours. Your work has just begun, and there will be generation after generation that wiii bless your name for being faithful to God's calling because you will be the mid-wives of the re-birth of this great Church of ours, and the Anglican Church the world round will see the light you will be shining forth from every corner of the Episcopal Church and they will rejoice. And all around the world women will stand a little taller and a little prouder because of what you are going to do in His Name ...Do not be anxious, if any of you are tired or getting close to being burned out; that the work load is just too heavy; you're not sure that you can carry on; I've got good news for you. Sister. You are being reborn in the Name of Jesus, and re-strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit. Receive that Spirit now in His Name and feel that new energy. This organization is just beginning, it is just getting started, and in the grateful Name of Jesus, everyone of you is going to live to see the day when you are going to double and tripe in size. And you are going to lift this Church up in the palm of your hands and carry it safely to the Promised Lane, IN JESUS NAME I HAVE PROPHESIED! AMEN." i GENERAL CONVENTION

At the General Convention the Order played a significant role in spreading word of the importance of prayer in the lives of all people. 1 OF THE F THE KING In the year preceding the convention, the Anglican Fellowship of prayer sponsored a prayer vigil for the Episcopal Church and the 1994 General Convention. To continue the prayer vigil during the convention and to provide a quiet place for meditaticai, a prayer chapel was envisioned by the Order and brought into being by the National Altar Guild.

As the convention dates approached, all bishops and leaders were contacted by letter inviting them to come to the prayer chapel at a specific time."It was a completejoy", said Elizabeth Hart, to receive the overwhelming responses saying "'YES!', I will be in the chapel pravin2 for the work of the Church." SmiZihS Representatives of the Order staffed a booth to distribute information and brochures about the work of the Order. Attendees received a warm welcome at the booth which was beautifully designed and produced by Laurie Ann Herman. Like this magazine's cover,"Women Joined in Prayer, For the Church, For the World", the theme echoes the vision of increasing the prayer of all people.

A significant service was held during the week when The Rt. Rev. Roger Pictured Is Elizabeth Hart at the J. White, Bishop of Milwaukee, was named national chaplain for the Order. Daughters' Booth. Gathering around Bishop White, Daughters in attendance assisted The Rt. Rev. Craig Anderson with the installation service and prayers were shared by each for his service for the next three years.

Gini Peterson, A DOK From St. Matthew's in Atlanta Diocese Is Elected to the Office of National President of Episcopal Church Women At General Convention in Indianapolis this summer, Gini Peterson from Stone Mountain, Georgia, and a daughter in St. Matthew's Chapter, was commissioned by The Most Reverend Edmond Browning as National President for the ECW. Here is a record of the occurrence from Elizabeth Hobbs, a Daughter in Pittsburgh,

What a wonderful experience it was to witness one of our Sisters in Christ be commissioned by our Presiding Bishop Edmond Browning, as the newly elected National President of the Episcopal Church Women!! It was heartwarming, inspirational, and exciting to watch Gini Peterson, a member of our Holy Order, become the next ECW President for this Triennium, knowing that all she would be doing would be For His Sake was a joyful reassurance to me, personally. All the Daughters that could be located, gathered to lay hands upon her and to pray before she was installed. She will be in my prayers as she performs the duties God has called her to and I ask that all of the Daughters of the King join me in covering her in prayer as she accepts her new position. EAN HICKS, EVANGELISM CHAIRMAN

I may be your new Evangelism Chairman, but vou know and I know sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ is everyone's business. Bruce Lrason wrote something that has stuck with me through the years and I quote "Evangelism is one beggar telling another beggar where the BREAD is." That's the truth, isn't it? If someone came to you hungry, surely you would share with them - you wouldn't send them away still hungry, would you? Even if you felt you had so little and thought it wasn't enough ... wouldn't you still share?

For His Sake, Jean

My name is Kathleen Nyhuis.(My last name is pronounced like the word "nice" with a hiccup in the middle!) It will be my joy to serve as your representative on the National Council for the next three years. Very soon you will receive a letter from me, with a postcard enclosed for your response. Please take a few minutes to answer the questions, then pop it in the mailbox. I want to know about you: how old you are what you like to do what you like most about being a Junior Daughter, what you'd like to know more about, how I might help you grow as a Child of Christ. (Junior Daughter Directresses may respond by letter; no need to state your age!) Please know that you may write or call anytime you need my assistance. My address and telephone number are listed on the inside cover of every issue of The Royal Cross. I share two prayers from my daily calendar you may like: Dear Lord, help me make a difference in someone's life so that they will be glad I am their friend. Amen. Gracious Lord, help me to gather all my worries into the daylight hours and turn them over to You before I go to bed. Amen. Please know that I hold you in my prayers. Blessings, For His Sake, Kathleen

THIS IS WHAT OUR LORD ASKS OF YOU; to he content to live with Him without anxiety, without any strain after perfection. Rest content with the knowledge that He in His own Person, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, is in your soul, substantially, really, literally; that He does everything you do with you, from the humblest duties to the highest. Your whole devotional life should consist in this companionship, accepted without ceremony, without intellectual or emotional effort, simply possessed and enjoyed, in perfect calmness and tranquility. You are to say nothing to our Lord except that which comes of itself, and that in the most homely words. Never stop for a moment to ask whether or why you are worthy ofthis simple companionship on such afooting. Simply practice it; that is all. As for the other things, such as acts of external devotion, they are only patterns, superimposed on this simple friendship. They should neither ruffle nor disturb its inward life. -from Letters of Direction - Abbe de Tourville I'm writing this 37,000 feet in the air somewhere between Rapid City and Minneapolis. My husband Charles, and I are returning home after a week of Deaf Camp at Thunderhead Episcopal Center outside Lead, South Dakota. It was a time of being special and feeling loved in a very safe, Christian environment. A time of learning to communicate, discovering one's identity and interacting with others. One of the deaf campers came 500 miles to attend. This ^ ^ ^0/ M .A A I speaks volumes to me of the need to come together with o O <

I'd like to share with you ajoumal I kept this past week ... "Today is Sunday, the day before the camp begins and S^K J the children arrive. I poured myself a cup of coffee and 'l'-' walked around a bit. The air was cool and clean and I was w M|^{ ftj^| i fl surrounded by tall pines, sage and a carpet of wild flowers. f H| As I sat on the ground, basking in the beauty around me, saw several birds soaring above. I thought of the deaf children who would be here tomorrow and prayed..."Lord, what would you have me do?" MONDAY: The children are here! There are seven and one more will arrive tomorrow. A few of them are shy, but that will change. Such an aura of loneliness about them. TUESDAY: This morning we read a story about the Lakota/Dakota people and how children are very loved and cherished. Played TEC Olympics this evening, with the kids and me on one team competing against the counselors on the other team. And the kids WON! ... All the children participated and fun was had by everyone. A good day! WEDNESDAY: Took everyone to Rough Rock Falls today. Kids and counselors (yes, even me) waded in the cold, cold water. Played in the "Falls". Saw and participated, by throwing rice, in a wedding between two bikers. The annual Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis was held the same Ume as our deaf camp. Tonight we saw the movie "The Secret Garden". What a wonderful day! THURSDAY: This is our last full day at camp. We took the children fishing. Didn't catch any fish but we sure had fun trying. Tonight a skit was performed by the children remembering what they had learned this week about culture, heritage and folklore. Afterwards, we had a giveaway. I can't say enough about the staff and counselors and Charles. They all have so much love and attention for the children. One of the hearing adults who attended with his deaf daughter told us he was helped and encouraged by witnessing so much love and patience in a Christian atmosphere. After the children had gone to bed, Charles and I and a few of the staff went out in the field and watched a meteor shower. What a way to end the week!!! FRIDAY: The children left this morning.
